  1. Just found this excellent free link today on our W.M. homeschooling group from Lori. http://www.handwritingworksheets.com/
  2. My reason were mostly academic. ADHD and being easily distracted. Left in 5th grade after abysmal progress and very sloppy work shown at repeated teachers conferences. Learning at home has shown superior results in math, science, writing, across the board, (most of the time.) An article I read this morning regarding the 15 year old girl who committed suicide after severe bullying at her public HS. So sad, because she was from Ireland and was so sweet and well liked initially. Then she became too popular for the "mean girls and cliques." You see this kind of thing over and over. Adults would never live in the hostile environment most children have to put up with, starting, sometimes in 1st grade. These poor children have no choice if parents don't see what's happening, intervene and take them out. The solutions the schools and parents try to make, rarely work, to change the bullies or to keep these kids safe.
  3. I thought it looked great and I felt it was really excellent. My child disliked it and for a science loving kid, it felt really boring, to her. I like to see her enthused about learning and she is, with text books and reading together. She likes to stop and talk about things we read and sometimes look up supporting material on the computer. She dosen't like a lot of online programs. I think that is key to this program. Does your child like sitting in front of a computer learning?
  4. Thanks so much. We did try this and several other on line programs and she really did not like them. She came to me and ask that we stick with text books most of the time. Not great for me but her favorite way to learn. I just hired a great math tutor and he is helping her with the problems she cannot do, one subject at a time. I just started analytical Grammar and find she learns it much more quickly than I do. Good thing, because it is difficult for me.
  5. I am homeschooling my 11 year old GD.. Last year I was doing fine. Now, I can tell a big difference. My mind is scattered and I sometimes I cannot grasp simple concepts. I'm pretty sure I am in early stages of Alzheimer's. She is very bright and I have an excellent tutor for math. The problem is that she has a severe problem with ADHD symptoms. She simply does not progress in a classroom. Sending her back to school would not be an option. She learns quickly with a textbook and sitting beside me reading and testing what we have just read. She is doing Rosetta Stone Spanish independently. Looking for the best programs out there for independent learning, in any subject at middle school level. Thank you
  6. I am late to HS and my student would be in 6th grade at PS. She needs grammar, writing, essays, etc. Is this IEW a program that supports all of this. Which items should I purchase at this age and with these needs. She is an avid reader and very bright. Might go with 7th or 8th grade level materials. I looked at write/start, but it is really expensive. Thanks, Diane
  7. I have to post on this. We are experiencing a very difficult period in our HS path at this time. Many, interruptions and the age related resistance to staying on task. Having said that, I took my child out because she has a DX of ADHD. I am not into titles or excuses, but I have a student for whom distractions of any kind, simply stop the learning process. In 4 1/2 years in an excellent charter school, she progressed in math and other subjects, only to the degree that she was taught at home doing homework. I resisted the removal from this school for that long due to it's reputation. I began to HS and in a very short time, she progressed in every subject, to at least, grade level and in math and science from multiplication, to mastering pre algebra within three to four months. She has amazing retention skills and learns so quickly, that without distractions she really pops. So, HS for her is the only way to go. I will consider returning by 9th grade or more likely, local community college classes by 10th grade. That is why I home school.
  8. Thanks so much for your help and advice. I feel encouraged to keep trying. I am setting down this morning to make a two week lesson plan. I am going to spend more time encouraging and expressing positive affirmations. Might try the communication box and see if that helps. Sounds great. The chaos is due to a very dysfunctional family member and their presence just turns this house upside down. Their are no easy answers, but your kind support has meant so much. We will keep working, and I will keep coming to this wonderful forum. I think reading here will mean the difference between success and failure. On the positive side, 6 months into HS we were at least three grades ahead in math and science. That is success we can build on. Pre Algebra skills are pretty much mastered. After trying several online math options, she has expressed a desire to work from a textbook, (we have done some of that, in the past) and I will be hiring a tutor to help with that. We are working from a college level biology book, and that is going well. Working with Rosetta Stone Spanish. Last semester she did Latin. I have a couple of math textbooks on order, Used and so cheap from Amazon. I am going to order Mammoth Math when I make a new evaluation as to her level and any gaps we didn't cover. Thanks again and I may post in a couple of weeks with an update based on your excellent advice. Diane I do feel that we have huge gaps. Sporadic art, music, civic lessons. History seems to have taken last place after a great start last year. Geography, report writing are suffering. It seems like we are all over the place. I will follow advice given and post again in a couple of weeks. Thanks, Diane
  9. Could anyone give me advice, about how to get back on track with a 12 year old girl who did great last year but due to constant chaos in our life has learned the art of evasiveness. I feel overwhelmed and ready to return to PS. I have to constantly remind myself of my reasons for leaving in the first place. Could you also tell me mid year what has worked best in your planned curriculum for 7th grade and what you've dropped and what you have stayed with. Thank you. Diane
  10. I am not an expert on HS and I'm new to this forum I am having some success with my 11 year old granddaughter with math I don't understand. She is using Aleks, teaching company basic math and a tutor one hour a week. She has come a long way in a fairly short period of time. We used plato or cyber ed for biology and she absolutely hated it. It probably taught her quite a few facts but I had to fight her to watch it. She learned and enjoyed it a lot more when we sat down and used science books from the Smithsonian series and she would then do vocabulary and answer questions on what she learned. We do science experiments from books from the library. I just ordered her a new text for biology and we will work on that together. Just one opinion but I would not buy cyber ed again.
  11. Is there a good forum out there for middle school aged kids who are H.S. I know this information is probably somewhere on this forum already but I couldn't pin it down. Thanks, Diane
