  1. I just need to vent. I'm so mad at myself!! I really liked the looks of the Oak Meadow 8th grade curriculum, particularly the choices of novels for English. So, I bought an Oak Meadow 8th grade curriculum on ebay. Well, I just assumed it was the current version because the covers looked similar. I should have asked! I should have realized there might be a reason the seller didn't list the publication date (which I didn't notice initially.) I just received it in the mail today, and it turns out it was published in 2001 (when DS was 4 years old!) and does not include all the same novels the current version does, but DOES include several books that I expect he will have ZERO interest in reading! SHOOT!!! Expensive danged lesson to learn...sigh.
  2. We used US for 2A/B, then switched to Standards when it became available. We experienced absolutely no trouble making the switch.
  3. Oh, my son (11 yo) hates it too! I should say that he really only hates exercise E, th passage and comprehension questions. But Exercise E is the reason we keep doing the program!
  4. If you read through all the posts on this thread, you'll see that someone (the OP?) contacted the company and asked about HSers. They said it was totally fine. I went ahead and initialed based on that information. BTW, I received my order yesterday!
  5. Well, I'm back to report that my 5th grader HATES the Story of US (oh, I'm so glad I have the whole set! :tongue_smilie:) He said it was boring, and he doesn't like the way she writes. He requested that we just stick with SOTW. I need more American history to supplement, so luckily for me, my library carries the "Drama" series!
  6. I think she has a very strong voice. Did she do what an English teacher might want? Maybe not. Did she do a great job describing herself? Absolutely.
  7. I started trying to learn this program today. It is making my head hurt. I am pretty computer-savvy, too. :001_huh: I hope it's worth it in the end!
  8. We're using Algebra I right now (and I LOVE it.) Have Geometry already for next year. I also bought the Basic Math set at the same time (used curriculum sale-SCORE!) I'm going to piggyback on this question because I'm wondering about the younger ages. I have a 5th grader who will use Singapore 5A/5B this year (Standards). I can't decide whether to use the Basic Math set for grade 6 or do Singapore 6A/6B. I'll have to look at that more closely as the time gets closer. Anyway, I'm just wondering how necessary it is to do a year of pre-Algebra before Algebra I. DS13 had pre-algebra in public school last year, so I haven't really gone through that subject yet. Does anyone skip it and go straight to Algebra I? Would I live to regret that?
  9. Keeping in mind that we've only made it through 3 lessons in Latin for Children A, I haven't found it especially religious. It was a little surprising that the chapter maxim for chapter one was "In the beginning was the word," because I had thought it was a completely secular program. That was the only thing I've seen so far. I don't have a problem with a certain number of biblical references being thrown in; I figure it helps promote cultural literacy.
  10. I'm using SOTW 3 with my 5th grader this year, and am using the corresponding chapters from Hakim's series to accompany it. We'll see how he likes it; haven't started since we're actually still finishing up SOTW 2 from last year! If he hates Hakim, I would (will) probably hold onto the books and use them later on, and find other books to beef up the American history part of our studies (maybe the "Drama of..." series that I've read good things about.)
  11. I think after twelve hours of crying it would be worth a "sick visit" to his pediatrician to expedite the referral process. Is this a rigidity issue (the change) or a sensory issue? ETA: I forgot to offer my sympthies on dealing with this very draining situation. I had to endure an hour of screaming and ridiculousness from my 13 year old this morning before his meds kicked in. Only thing that kept me sane was the countdown to when I knew they'd be taking effect!!
  12. I pulled my 8th grader out this year, and I've been panicking since we made the decision!! I'm still panicking, but as my husband keeps saying, "How much worse can it be?" It won't be worse for him, but it will be worse for ME! I wasn't expecting to have to do 8th grade work for another 3 years!
  13. Thanks, everyone. This information is exactly what I was looking for! :)
  14. The subject says it all. I'm just curious how much content is actually in the student and teacher pages, and how much is online. Can you do much with just the printed pages? (I'm sure it varies by course and level; I'm just looking for an idea here.)
  15. I prefer the Standards edition. The HIG is better, and there are a few topics that are introduced earlier in Standards than in US. There's a lot of information on the Singapore website; check out their FAQs and the forum.
  16. Repeating can be an OCD or ticcy/Tourette's thing. I'd keep an eye out for tics, rituals, or repetitive/intrusive thoughs. If it's not interfering with anything, doesn't cause him distress, and there are no other unusual or concerning behaviors, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It might be a good idea to do some discrete questioning about intrusive/repetitive thoughts or worries. Amy
  17. Oh my gosh; I can't stop laughing!! It was funny to just read about you leaving it in random places, but the sight of it has tears rolling down my face!!
  18. I emailed K12 customer service several days ago to ask if the texts available for purchase separately included the student and teacher pages, or the text only. They haven't gotten back to me yet. From my reading of this thread, it looks like they do NOT, and I have to do the whole rigmarole of signing up for the course and then canceling it if I want to buy the materials from them. What a pain. Do they actually refund the extra 20 or 30 bucks they charge for the class if you cancel right away?
  19. Birth through 13 1/2. :001_huh: It's all been rough, but in different ways. Then again, my kids have issues, so they're not really typical.
  20. Ooh, good to know about the TJ chewables! I have to crush tablets and give them to my 11 year old in yogurt b/c he can't swallow pills. I just use the kind they have at my grocery store and we've had no issues with it. I just looked, and it's "Nature's Made" brand.
  21. Our boys were in our bed at least sometimes for quite a while, but I can't even think of the age when they "moved out"!! (We did not usually have them BOTH there at the same time, except in cases of bad dreams or whatnot.) I guess what that says is that when they're ready to be on their own, they will be. It helped our boys to be together in a room for a while (bunk beds), but eventually that was more conflict than comfort, so we split them up. They just rediscovered the fun of being together when we had a family member visit, though! They stayed together, with one on the floor, a couple nights after the family member left!
  22. I agree. I think the whole thing is STUPID, and I can't tell you how many very-partially used notebooks we've had come home at the end of the year, but no way would I make my child feel uncomfortable at the cost of a new notebook. I would definitely have a talk with him about the ridiculousness and waste of it all, but if he felt strongly that he had to have a new notebook, I would go ahead and get him one. The partially used ones tend to get repurposed as "ridiculous stories and drawings" notebooks, anyway! SO glad to not have to deal with the "school supplies" issue this year, for the first time in what, 9 years!
  23. Try looking for recipes on my favorite canning forum, the Gardenweb Harvest forum. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/harvest/ There are some VERY knowledgeable folks who hang out there. If you search the forum, you'll be able to find lots of good recipes (look for Linda Lou's dill pickles; that might suit your needs." Amy
  24. Oh, I'm so glad. I logged onto this board specifically to look for an update. You must be so relieved! :)
  25. I'm trying to tell myself that what I have is FINE, and I chose it for a reason. "Good enough is good enough!" :) There's always next year for a different curriculum. Now, if only I could decide about my 13yo's history studies, I could stop thinking about this entirely--for now!
