Indiana University High School?
amys replied to amys's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Dulcimeramy-hey, that's the kind of loving, giving mom I am! ;-D Debbs--Thanks for sharing your experience! That's just the kind of thing I'm interested in learning about. They actually have phased out the correspondence courses entirely, and all the courses are online now. I'm not clear on whether they're terribly interactive or not, though. -
Anyone have experience with the Indiana University High School online program? As a Boilermaker I feel very conflicted about considering this option :), but it looks like a good possibility.

Affordable and GOOD virtual school/distance learning?
amys replied to amys's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
The Apex pricing is kind of hard to find. If you go to "Contact" there is a hyperlink to a website under "Virtual School." Click on that and it takes you to the virtual school site; go to "enroll" and there is a link for tuition and fees--but I'll put the link in here to make life simpler. :) http://alvs.com/Enroll/Tuition_and_Fees.htm Tuition is $350 per semester. Kind of salty. I actually had looked at Seton, but I do want something strictly secular. If they didn't require four years of religious studies I would consider it, but I don't think that would work for us. -
Affordable and GOOD virtual school/distance learning?
amys replied to amys's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thanks for the input. It looks like Apex will send a grade report but does not keep transcripts. I can put together a transcript myself, so that's not a huge deal. My school district allows homeschoolers to earn a diploma from our local high school if graduation requirements are met, so the fact that Apex is accredited would probably help with that process should we decide to go that route. My son does learn well independently and mostly needs something or someone to keep him on track (other than me!) so I won't rule out Keystone just yet. I'll keep digging...thanks again. -
I haven't had the time needed to devote to making the decisions about high school curricula or programs because we had a bit of a flood here and our lives are in disarray. However, I need to be getting my letter to the school district within the next couple of weeks, and am feeling panicky. I've been researching various virtual school options for my 9th grader, but nothing is really fully working for me. I'd LOVE to enroll him in k12, but we don't have an extra 7 grand sitting around to throw at that program. There are no PS/virtual charter options for us in this state. I found Keystone, but then I came on here and saw a number of negative things. I saw a reference to Apex Learning, which certainly looks more affordable, but I don't really know anything about that program. We tried Oak Meadow for 8th grade, and DS was not a fan. He enjoyed doing the Plato science lessons and those through the KY virtual school (which uses the Plato platform.) I had thought of just using the KYVS program for the fall; read that they are upgrading some of their programs and adding more honors/AP classes, which is encouraging. It certainly would be the most affordable of the options, running probably $300 when the HSBC runs a deal. I don't know; I guess I am just hoping someone could throw out the name of a great online/distance/virtual program that is going to require minimal involvement from me and be both engaging and challenging for my son. Any ideas?

Help me find a suitable Algebra II course?
amys replied to Susan in TN's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
There's also Chalkdust. I haven't used Algebra II but we used Algebra I this year and I was very happy with it (we will be using CD Geometry in the fall.) The instructor is quite clear and thorough. -
Using K12 Student & Teacher pages w/o online lessons
amys replied to amys's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Oh my gosh; I posted pretty much the same question last August! Oops. :) I'm still interested in hearing anything people would like to say on the matter, though! -
I'm curious to know how feasible it is to purchase the K12 student and teacher pages plus the required books and do the curriculum that way. Is it necessary to have the online component, or are the majority of the instruction and assignments actually in the printed materials? Inquiring (and cheap) minds want to know! Love the looks of K12, but it's so pricey (and my state has no virtual academy option.)

Ok, I confess I haven't been paying as much attention as I should during this chapter's videos (mea culpa), and I never used a graphing calculator when I was in school. This problem has both my son and me at a loss. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? The solutions manual shows the graph that should be generated, but I don't know what he should be entering to get this graph!! This is from Algebra I 2nd edition, chapter 4 review #148 (sorry; I Have no clue how to get my keyboard to produce exponents or the pi symbol!: "Geometry: The volume V of the segment of a sphere of radius 5 is a function of the height h of the segment (see figure). The formula for the function is V(h) = pi(5h^2 - h^3/3), 0 < h <=5 (that's less than or equal to; don't know how to make that sign either!) Use a graphing utility to graph the function over the specified interval." I think it's the "specified interval" that is the problem, as he is graphing other equations without difficulty. Any suggestions? Thanks! Amy

Is a "Direction Object" the same thing as a direct object? Also, is a "predicate nominative" the same thing as a subject complement? The definition I found on the internet says a predicate nominative follows a linking verb and describes or renames a subject--that sounds like a subject complement to me! Sincerely, A Confused Voyages in English and Latin for Children user who never took Latin herself. :)

Yes, it's hard to find! I had searched for it just a few days ago, so I remembered where it was. Glad I could help. -

Geesh, I just saw the date on the post I replied to. Never mind. :) I forgot that this post came up in a search; didn't think to see when it was posted! Oopsie. :)

I am currently using SWI-B with my two boys, who are 13 and 11. I think SWI-B would be the appropriate starting spot for the ages you're talking about. It might be a bit much for your 8 year old, depending on his abilities, but you could probably modify the activities, or even have him watch the "B" videos but work on the "A" lessons (which can be downloaded as an e-book for $10.)

not happy about Chalkdust Algebra 1
amys replied to Teresa Hope's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We're using an older edition of the CD Algebra I (with VHS tapes) and I LOVE love love it. I watch the tapes with him to refresh my own memory so I know what the heck we're doing. My son is conceptually strong in math but tends to make inattentive errors, so I do need to understand what's going on and not rely solely on the solutions manual! I wouldn't hesitate to spend the money for support if it becomes necessary down the line, espeically since I purchased the program so cheaply. It would be frustrating to have to wait for a response. Another terrific (and free) web resource that might be useful to some is http://www.hippocampus.org. Amy -
You could use Singapore with Extra Practice and Challenging Word Problems (or whatever the new replacement for this is called.) Using the tests for each section can also help slow it down. Amy

Blood tests determine ADD/ADHD?
amys replied to Dobela's topic in General Education Discussion Board
There is absolutely NO blood test that can diagnose ADHD. None. They should run, not walk, to a qualified professional. -
Problems downloading files from Yahoo groups today
amys replied to Poke Salad Annie's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My understanding (from a friend who runs a yahoo group) is that Yahoo groups is in the middle of completely changing the way they look and operate. From what she tells me, the ability for groups to share/store files is going to be discontinued! Now, keep in mind this is second hand information, but that's what I was told. The list she runs has been having all kinds of problems for over a month--some members are getting email, some aren't (including me.) -
The title kind of says it all. I'm intrigued by this, but it's awfully expensive to buy a full set. I am so tempted to get the American History set, but I'd love to hear from anyone with experience using this product before I plunk down umpteen bejillion dollars!!
