  1. Has anyone used this for history? More specifically, has anyone used this in conjunction with SOTW? I was hoping to use this as a supplement, so my dd could look up corresponding chapters. But there isn't a glossary. Does anyone know if there is a glossary floating around out there? Thanks!
  2. This thread has been most helpful! I have added and removed Figuratively Speaking from my shopping cart 100 times. Now I think I will go with it! Thank you!
  3. My almost 10 year old wants to read Anne Frank and I think the subject is too mature. But she really wants to read it (her older sisters both have read it) and so I am wondering if I am not being to rigid on this. What age do you/did you/would you let your child read this book? Thanks!
  4. My dd doesn't like how the paper feels :) so she works on a separate sheet of paper, but I do think there is room to work in the book. I will say, just my two cents, we found that there was a lot to do in one day...the timed test, mental math, lesson, lesson problems and mixed practice. We were spending a long time on math everyday, but math really is not her strongest subject. We started doing only the odd numbers of the mixed practice and if she gets most of those right, we continue on. If not, the next day she will go back and do the even numbered problems. It's working very well for us!
  5. We are doing Saxon 5/4 and I don't believe there is a teachers manual...is there? I think the homeschool kit comes with a workbook, tests and worksheets book, and solutions manual. We are doing fine, I think the material covered is written very well. Maybe with the upper levels there are teachers manuals, I don't know though.
  6. I was really inspired by this post: http://dawnathome.typepad.com/by_sun_and_candlelight/file_crate_system/
  7. I just checked and my library has the newest version...I would definitely check it out before spending the money again. Thanks for the recommendation Daybreaking.
  8. I wish I could say we love it...but we don't. The stories just don't grab us, they are too short and they are disconnected. I don't think dd retains anything she reads from that book, and the girl loves history. Sorry to say, it's a miss for our family.
  9. JudoMom recommended listening to SWB elementary writing program on one of my threads. I listened to both the elementary and the middle grade years and found both to be very helpful! I feel completely prepared to take on writing next year.
  10. Oh thanks! Now I see it. I have trouble with that website sometimes, I am sure it is just me, but I never can find what I am looking for! :001_smile: And lucky you for the thrift store score!
  11. We had the EXACT same problem with R&S English. She cried every single day. We switched to Junior AG and, I am not kidding, she actually said, "Oh yay! Grammar!" She flew through the program and amazed me with her knowledge. It's a great program for us and we are definitely continuing on with AG.
  12. We do Saxon 5/4 Monday - Thursday, and on Friday we work from LOF Fraction, Mindbenders and Family Math. It works really well for us! She is finishing up Saxon so this summer we are going to use Singapore for our "Math Mondays." We do not school year around, but my dd is not math inclined so it is important to keep all that math in the brain over longer breaks!
  13. I was actually questioning that at the beginning of the year. My dd is grade 4 and going through Spelling Workout D and I had decided not to continue on with E (even though we really love the program, don't get me wrong). Then today she was reading a book and asked me what ingenious meant, but before I could answer she said, "Oh, I just learned about IN as a prefix in spelling..." And she was able to answer that question for herself. So for now, I will have to agree with Susan Wise Bauer and say that it is important, especially the rules. :)
  14. Thank you all so much. I am unable to buy the DVDs, but I will stick with it. I am happy to hear that I am not alone in my lack of Latin knowledge. We will stick with the flash cards and memorization and I might try breaking it up into 2 weeks. Thanks so much! I would love the chart...I will PM you right now. Also, I didn't know about the slides. I will head over and check those out. Thanks for the words of advice, they were super helpful. One question, I was looking for the Henle Grammar book and it looks like they only sell it as a set. I will try looking for it somewhere else.Is the actual title Henle Grammar? Thanks again everyone!
  15. I do the same thing as Lara...I reserve books and pick them up once or twice a week. We usually check out 5-10 books per chapter because I really think it adds to the lesson. SOTW is great, my dd is always excited to do history!
  16. I have been wondering this myself. I am looking for something to use with my dd who will be grade 5 next year. We are taking a break between Jr. AG and AG...so Language Lessons looks perfect. I am interested in seeing what everyone says.
  17. I was hoping anyone using this program could give me some pointers or advice. I am just not getting it, this is my first experience with Latin as well, and therefore I think my dd is suffering too. We finished Prima Latina earlier this year and moved onto Latina Christiana I. It was going along smoothly until we got to the 2nd declension. My dd can memorize the vocabulary without any problems, but declining (is that even the word?) is where we run into trouble. The book doesn't really go into detail about what all the cases represent or why you use the 1st declension instead of the 2nd. So I feel like we are memorizing words and case endings without knowing the reasons why. That sort of feels like memorizing division tables before understanding addition. Maybe it is just me, I dunno. But if you use this program and like it, can you tell me why. How exactly are you using it? If you have switched to another, which one? Any advice would be most helpful here! Thanks so much!
  18. We are not the most rigorous out there, but here is what we do (curriculum is in my siggy): DD, Grade 4: Spelling: (M-Th) Every day starts with Spelling...text on Thurdays. Math: (M-F) 60 minutes every day, with Fridays being more of a fun or real math day. Grammar: (M-T) Finished Jr. AG so now we are working on mad libs, also each 4th grader in Maine is supposed to do a report on our state, so we are working on that, too. History: (M, W, F) Read aloud a chapter or two a week from SOTW, map work, encyclopedia work, add dates to time line, activity, & review questions. She writes a one page narration about what we have learned each week on Fridays, and she independently reads from suggested history books (from SOTW) for 1/2 hour every day. Science: (Th) We do one long day of science...experiments, and then she writes down observations and outcomes. Latin: (M, T, Th) Work from Latina Christiana, Mimimus, Book of Roots and Ludere Latine. We also read one chapter aloud from Famous Men of Rome. Composer Study and Artist/Picture study: CM method, done once a week. Reading: The girls reads a ridiculous number of library books each week. Typing Tutor on Fridays. Spanish class on Fridays. Writing club on Tuesdays. She also participates in a wilderness class the first Tuesday of every month. Umm...I think that is it :)
  19. We are Blue Heron Academy. My daughter came up with it. We watch the heron out our window while we are homeschooling during warmer months, so I think that is where she got the idea.
  20. I keep reading rave reviews about MCT, but when I go to the website I feel so overwhelmed. Can anyone give me advice on where to start? I was thinking Caesar's English...but I don't know. Any advice would be most appreciated! Thanks!
