  1. Lego Robotics is a great place to start. Pics here of my girls with their new NXT...
  2. My girls were younger in these pics of our basement schoolroom. (Life was much more simple back then. :)) They spend more time at their bedroom school desks these days -- and our home office.

  5. We shifted gears a bit this month. Dd9 now attends our neighborhood ALE two days/week. Loves it. Can't wait to go with dd8 to see friends, have different teachers, go class-to-class, lunchroom, recess and all that jazz. I love the break. :) She enjoys typing paragraphs, essays and stories so we are taking a light approach to writing now. She did MCT GT in the fall w/ her online english class. I updated my siggy below if you are interested in the other stuff we're doing this semester. Still having a blast with our various math resources/classes. :lurk5:
  6. She assigns tons of various resources that are optional -- along w/ assignments from the text/wb. It varies by student and parent. It is low-stress.
  7. Dds are taking writing at our local ALE this year. Students there are expected to write a strong multi-para personal narrative in grades 3 & 4 -- among other writing topics. We used IEW, WWW along w/ WWE over the years so both dds are doing fine. WWW teaches the personal narrative in books 3 & 4. Dd9's class is studying and writing poetry this semester. She does a bit of writing for an online class as well. It's wise to come at writing from different angles. HTH! :)
  8. I agree with others not to plan too far ahead. Life happens. This year isn't quite turning out like I originally planned. But I'm rolling with it. Dds thoroughly enjoy our neighborhood ALE where they are now attending on Mon & Wed all day. The math is great review of the basics with a heavy focus on problem solving -- and the girls LOVE it. That gives me 2 full days to work on projects of my own. :) Dd9 didn't do a formal prealg. We used various resources that got the job done. grade 4 -- TT Alg 2 3x/wk algebra tutoring via Cybershala 1x/wk algebra tutoring via Crewton Ramone grade 5 -- finish TT Alg 2, more algebra online classes, local tutors? grade 6 -- public school algebra? grade 7-- public school geometry? I have CD & Aops if needed for supplementation. We're in no hurry. HTH! :)
  9. Dd is taking BA from Athena's. It's a fun add-on for an hour/week. Not sure if we're signing up for next semester. Athena is great with kids.
  10. Excellent questions! I wish I had researched this sooner. Our state just passed a law to legalize marijuana. Yes, we have discussed this at length with ds over the past few months. The teen/young adult culture that I am in contact with has mixed thoughts/feelings on this topic. Many students don't consider pot a 'drug' -- which is troubling to me. It is everywhere around here. In schools, colleges, etc. I brought in a gentleman from a local ministry to speak at our youth & college/career group on a Wed night last month. Unite 4 Life educates students & parents regarding drugs, depression, suicide. Not exactly feel-good topics for youth group -- but necessary. We had 5 teen suicides in our county last year. So sad. Drugs played a role in some of those deaths.
  11. Fun thread, Derek. :) Dd9 is doing algebra with a variety of resources... TT Alg 1 & 2 Rachna/Cybershala private online lessons (3x/week) Ben Rogers/Crewton Ramone private online lessons (1x/week) She is extremely sick this week but still wants to do her alg class w/ Ben today. Dd8 does beginning algebra with Ben also each week. He's fabulous. We do basic math and algebra as separate subjects these days. :lurk5:
  12. Yes. Online classes and local tutors are a fantastic solution.
  13. Dd9 is doing 'middle school work' (whatever that means). She enjoys online classes (algebra, geography, mythology, MCT) for the discussion. She attends our local ALE for tech-tools & science (for fun). Again, she loves the interaction w/ teachers & peers. Her Mandarin class is highly challenging w/ a tutor who takes her language quite seriously. Piano lessons provide a creative outlet. Dd's piano teacher lets her pic her own music. This month she is mastering 'Who Am I?' from Les Mis. Her favorite enrichment is probably Chinese Calligraphy lessons. Both dds are in heaven.
  14. Younger dds will go to middle and/or high school. Not sure where.
  15. Dd15 uses the PMP books to supplement her Spanish studies. You can't go wrong.
  16. Not sure if you are including CE in your Town materials. Dd9 is doing the comparison/contrast paragraph assignment on page 95 of CE1 for her Landry class this week. I will know more about Town writing assignments in a month or so. So far I like what I see. Solid instruction.
  17. I use WWW3 w/ dd8 for this purpose. In our state, grade 3 students need to write 3 paragraphs w/ structure (topic sentence, details, ending sentence, transitions, etc). WWE doesn't teach para structure.
  18. :iagree: Dd is currently doing cwp/ip 4, prealg concpts with Crewton R, TT6. Her enVision experience is problem-solving sets only and 2 hours/week of class. It's just fun and 'enrichment' for a kid who lives for math. She loves going to 'school' with friends, a teacher, playground, lunchroom, etc. A mom came up to me yesterday after class at the ALE and said, "Your daughter has been helping my daughter with math at their table." I loved hearing that. Aly feels so confident in her math skills and loves helping to explain concepts to her little friends. :001_smile:
  19. :iagree: We have great success with WWW3 along with WWE3. Dd8 loves her blue writing workbook. :)
