  1. Around here a teaching assistant job would not pay enough to motivate anyone to spend that much. That's crazy. My SIL is a reading specialist assistant and she makes a very low wage despite an associates degree and years of dedication and experience.
  2. Hmm, I would love to be a child life specialist. Brightening the days of sick children and reducing their anxiety sounds ideal to me. But I have enough experience with adoption and particular special needs that I could use my knowledge to be a counselor to adoptive parents and children as they navigate life. Frankly, I'm fed up with the lack of understanding of RAD and FASD among mental health professionals. I do have a social work degree, but I would have to go to graduate school and we have no money or time for that right now while I'm raising my own kids. If we came into significant money it would be awesome to get that education as soon as my little guy is high school age. I love Tap's idea and would love up fund a play center like that. I also have a desire to be a judge or a legal advocate for kids in the system. Or maybe a billionaire who influences the system heavily to change the broken foster care system.
  3. Is it the dog right next door? I'd be tempted to toss the piles into their yard in the same spot, creating a big pile. Causes you work, but might make a point.
  4. I grew up with a mix of approaches, but I am uncomfortable with this practice when adults are having an adult conversation. There is no reason for a child to sit and listen. I think it shows how child centered we have become. Some of that is not bad, but it has gone too far. For example, in church groups children are included in prayer time with adults, therefore I can never ask for specific prayer for my children or private matters. I'm fine with children being a part of every faith activity in order to teach them that they are an important part of the community, but not when it gets to the point of impeding the actual practice they are participating in. I hope that makes sense.
  5. I think that is getting to be more normal, unfortunately. My husband's immediate boss resigned and the company took an applicant all the way through the process, offered him the job, and then it was killed when the money for the position wasn't approved. Who know if it ever will be filled.
  6. This sounds similar to my daughter before she started her current medication. An approach that is really helpful with these kids is the neuro behavioral approach. Normal behavior therapy does not work because consequences have no effect. Diane Malbin is the author of Trying Differently Rather than Harder. We went to a training in this method and it clearly illustrated what we were dealing with and why.
  7. Prayed for Jenna, your family, and doctors. Lifted you all up and asked for wisdom and help in your trouble. I'm sorry this road is so heartbreaking. We've been in dark places as well, with very little support. I'm so glad you asked for prayer.
  8. I think it is the atmosphere in our country. People are so focused on their "rights" being attacked, that they can't tolerate a recommendation based on science. People interpret that as a judgement on them personally, Someone above said that this have roots in our Puritan history and is a moral argument. No, it is a scientific one first and an anecdotal one second in my case. If I can save children from suffering like my girl has, I will keep speaking the truth. If I can prevent the very real secondary trauma from the rages, I will speak again and again. (Again, the symptoms go way beyond this for her and others. The learning disabilities are staggering and perplexing. An example : my daughter learned to multiply rather quickly, but still struggles with subtraction. She's 13. ) I can't list all the effects here, but you can find them with a little searching. 🙂 Mild or moderate drinking is not worth the potential heartbreak.
  9. Actually, that recommendation came out from the CDC months sgo and caused quite a stir. Many claimed that it was an attack on women's freedoms to make that recommendation. Obviously I disagree with that.
  10. No, what I'm saying is that some of the symptoms of FAS are the same or similar to ADHD, therefore, when there is no admission of drinking, kids are diagnosed with ADHD. I think I stated it unclearly.
  11. The effects of FAS go beyond intelligence and behavior. In fact, many kids with FAS score high in IQ. There can be unseen brain damage as well as damage to other organs in the body. FAS is often misdiagnosed as other problems, like SPD and ADHD because it doesn't cross parents' minds that alcohol could be a factor. Again, an OB might not be the best source of information. Research into this disorder is being done, but understanding and knowledge are increasing slowly. This information is not meant to shame, but to raise awareness. It is amazing that those who admit they have no experience with FAS are advising light to moderate drinking. Please do not pick and choose research to fit your opinion. I live with a child whose birth mom claims she was not drinking during pregnancy. I do not blame her for what happened, but I suspect she might mean she was not drinking heavily until after that time. This mentality of a little drinking is fine could be influencing that claim and complicating my child's medical care. She loved her child and wanted what was best for her, just as we all do. The best thing is to either abstain or do extensive research of your own. I suspect most would find it easier to abstain.
  12. As the mother of a child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome it is a shock to read an encouragement to drink toward a woman who is possibly pregnant. Yes, there is a possibility that alcohol affects children in the early stages. I am very well-read on the subject and varying research and opinions. Please, please do not tell people it is ok based on a Harvard article or even your own OB's recommendation. Obstetricians do not specialize in juvenile disorders. Canada is actually far ahead of the US in understanding FAS. My own pediatrician, who is awesome, acknowledged that I likely know than she. These doctors are experts in their field, but not this specialized area. The same goes with many, many doctors in related fields like psychology and education. There is very little understanding of the cause and effect relationship. That said, OP, if you had a glass of wine, please don't worry about it. Genetics and frequency of use do play a part in the affect alcohol can have on a child. If you are expecting, the baby is likely fine. I know this isn't a perfect analogy, but it is like driving a car with no seat belts on a crazy busy road in a foreign country and not wearing a seat belt. You might walk away from that ride just fine, but the next time you would be better off to ride in a car with a seatbelt. So what I am saying is, why take a chance of injury if you have the opportunity to choose otherwise? All the best to you, and I hope your news goes the way you hope.
  13. I once had a cashier ask if my child was autistic right in front of her, as if autistic people can't hear. What in the world?! (My daughter has FAS and has blank affect when she is overwhelmed.)
  14. And now I got distracted by the missing posters thread and haven't voted. Oops. I miss Remudamom, but I saw she was here recently. I'll always remember SSS from her. :001_smile: Peela, Pam, Amy in FL, Denise, Ree, MMV, and more come to mind. I know Ree isn't missing, but she doesn't post here anymore as far as I know.
  15. :001_smile: I finally decided to come out of the shadows, and I tried to do the Easter Poll. I'm not sure why it told me I had to have at least one post, though. I thought I had over 200. Impressive, right? HAHA Maybe with a new name that is necessary? But the change was a must since I was just a little too easy to find with my last username. How can I vent about my sweet MIL and reveal my darkest secrets if people can find me here? Anyway, here it is!!! This is my required post. Off to vote again.
  16. What do you mean?m I looked up Standing Rock and I saw a report from the AP that protesters at Standing Rock have burned three vehicles, and one woman shot a pistol three times, narrowly missing a deputy. The officers did not shoot back, and it sounds like the police are trying to handle it with the least force necessary.
  17. I wanted to bump this for you. Also, have you consulted a travel agent? Even if the price through and agent is too high, you might get ideas from what they pitch.
  18. I think I would acknowledge ambition and willingness to work hard for excellence. I might say something like, "It is obvious that you recognize and appreciate excellence and you want to be a part of that. I really admire your drive as well. As your parent it is my responsibility to make sure your life is in balance and that your are excelling over all. It is impossible to do all things to a very high degree. We each have a certain amount of energy, time, and resources to pour into life. Part of your life is school and right now, family. This family cannot be excellent if one member is so clearly overcommitted in time and resources to one activity. It is so difficult to make this decision because we value hard work and high standards. Your first responsibility now and to your future is school. The majority of time and resources should be poured into your current studies and preparation for your future studies. Commitment to a team can be part of that in keeping you well-rounded and content, but this team requires more time, resources, and energy than would be good for you or the family as a whole. We cannot continue down this road. " I would also emphasize that she will get out of the other teams what she puts in. She can raise the level of play and value of the another team with her commitment and skills.
  19. A bit off topic, but found it amusing that your dogs are claiming to be white Germans!
  20. In only two days time? Absolutely not. how could the mom be sure that fast?
  21. I highly doubt it. But I will say I assumed it was public knowledge. I'm sure the wife was held up as saintly by many people.
