  1. Multiplication and some of the division facts can be taught as a system instead of memorizing flash cards.

     

    Times 2 is a double. Divde by 2 cut the number in half.

    Times 3 is a double plus the number.

    Times 4 is a double plus a double. Divde by 4 cut the number in half twice.

    Times 5 count by fives. Divide by 5 count up by fives to the number.

    Times 6 is times five plus the number.

    Times 7 is times five plus a double.

    Times 8 is times four plus times four. Divde by 4 cut the number in half three times.

    Times 9 use the fold under the finger 'magic 9' method. Divide by 9 use the fold under the finger method.

  2. The best way to teach kids to read is to use decoding words. Give the student a list of sight words and then have them use a highlighter pen to highlight the small sounds within the word. eg., candidate = highlight 'can' in one color, 'did' in another color and 'ate' in another. The child then reads the words by reading each color unit. This takes the fear out of reading and gives the student a 'tool' to use. Using this decoding method creates confident, fluent readers in a very short time.

     

    I have worked with dyslexic, ADHD, brain injury, low IQ (adult and children) and struggling students for years, teaching them to read using decoding word lists and highlighters has worded for ALL of them. I also use ReverseFixUp dot patterns with all my students.

  3. To create a fluent reader, use word decoding lists. Using a list of grade or level appropriate words have your child highlight the small words or sound units found within the word. As they read other text, their eye will look for the sound units thus removing the mystery and decoding the words. You will be amazed at how well this works.

    To deal with the multi-step instructions - play a robot game, give one instruction (eg., walk forward 3 steps); next give two instructions at a time, then three, etc.

  10. I work with students with various learning difficulties. Most are concept/system thinkers and though they struggle with basic learning, they do very well with concepts. Starting with my son over 25 years go, I discovered you need to teach them the way they think. I use dot patterns for letter and number reversals, as well as for thinking. Decoding word lists for reading and fluency. Give them a formula for paragraph writing and use a system to teach math facts.

    I tell them that they are really smart, they just think differently and need to be taught a different way. It is amazing to watch them gain confidence and succeed academically.

  11. The school says that she doesn't read as quickly as she should. Her vocabulary is where it should be, she's jsut not fluent enough. She has trouble remembering certain sound combinations, and her spelling is really bad.

    I was looking at apples and pears for my dd, and that's how we got to talking about it. I'll be sure to tell her about AAS also

  12. So we are going through testing with ds and my head is spinning. I had no clue he was going through so much. How can a mother miss all this? Tourettes (we knew, but its "official" now) SPD, low tone, eye tracking problems, visual/spatial delays and that is all without the meeting after all the evals are done to go through the results.

     

    Please don't get discouraged, we have all been thru it with our own children and with our students. Children with learning difficulties just need to be taught a little differently to do well in school.
