5th Grader help with division/multiplication - Singapore 3A?
TAKlinda replied to ThePW's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Multiplication and some of the division facts can be taught as a system instead of memorizing flash cards. Times 2 is a double. Divde by 2 cut the number in half. Times 3 is a double plus the number. Times 4 is a double plus a double. Divde by 4 cut the number in half twice. Times 5 count by fives. Divide by 5 count up by fives to the number. Times 6 is times five plus the number. Times 7 is times five plus a double. Times 8 is times four plus times four. Divde by 4 cut the number in half three times. Times 9 use the fold under the finger 'magic 9' method. Divide by 9 use the fold under the finger method. -
Advice needed for hsing friend with special needs daughter
TAKlinda replied to Mama Anna's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
The best way to teach kids to read is to use decoding words. Give the student a list of sight words and then have them use a highlighter pen to highlight the small sounds within the word. eg., candidate = highlight 'can' in one color, 'did' in another color and 'ate' in another. The child then reads the words by reading each color unit. This takes the fear out of reading and gives the student a 'tool' to use. Using this decoding method creates confident, fluent readers in a very short time. I have worked with dyslexic, ADHD, brain injury, low IQ (adult and children) and struggling students for years, teaching them to read using decoding word lists and highlighters has worded for ALL of them. I also use ReverseFixUp dot patterns with all my students. -
To create a fluent reader, use word decoding lists. Using a list of grade or level appropriate words have your child highlight the small words or sound units found within the word. As they read other text, their eye will look for the sound units thus removing the mystery and decoding the words. You will be amazed at how well this works.

SN and math facts memorization?
TAKlinda replied to wy_kid_wrangler04's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
I work with students with learning difficulties and generally they are unable to memorize basic math facts. *Instead I teach them different strategies, eg., counting on/down, regrouping (7+5=6+6=12), related facts (7+6 use 6+6), math ladder for subtraction. -
How did you get past this reading stage?

He probably isn't 'seeing' the letters -- try ReverseFixUp. -
Maybe my ds8 is dyslexic?

The best way to increase reading fluency is to use colored highlighters with decoding word lists. If letter reversals are a problem, use ReverseFixUp. -

Where do I even start? Testing?
TAKlinda replied to Janie Grace's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Children with learning problems have to be taught using different methods. Reading - word decoding lists Math - counting up/down, related facts, regrouping, math ladder Letter reversals - dot patterns To deal with the multi-step instructions - play a robot game, give one instruction (eg., walk forward 3 steps); next give two instructions at a time, then three, etc. -

Instead I teach them different strategies, eg., counting on/down, regrouping (7+5=6+6=12), related facts (7+6 use 6+6), math ladder for subtraction. Multiplying and dividing are easier since students can see the system involved, eg., times 4 is a double plus a double, divided by eight cut the number in half three times.

When do you worry about reve6rsals and testing?(dyslexia)
TAKlinda replied to Soror's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
To deal with letter reversals, use dot patterns for letter and number reversals. Some children have difficulties isolating the lines and arcs that make up letters, so to them b, d, p, q seem the same. The best way to teach kids to read is to use decoding words. Give the child a list of sight words and then have them use a highlighter pen to highlight the small sounds within the word. eg., candid = highlight 'can' in one color and 'did' in another color. The child then reads the words by reading each color unit. -
The fastest way to teach anyone to read is to use decoding words. You can use a list of words or even a newspaper. Have him use a highlighter pen to highlight the small sounds within the word. eg., candid = highlight 'can' in one color and 'did' in another color. Then read the words by reading each color unit. If he is dyslexic, use dot patterns for letter and number reversals. You can make your own by making a 9x9 dot grid and drawing lines on it that your father will copy onto another 9x9 dot grid.

Those of you familiar with LDs: What is this...?

It would be interesting to see if dot patterns for letter and number reversals at the expert level would help. Did she reverse her letters as a child? -

Some students are concept or system thinkers. Reading fluency is easily increased for these students by using decoding word lists. How do you handle the "I'm not smart" comments?
TAKlinda replied to razorbackmama's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
I work with students with various learning difficulties. Most are concept/system thinkers and though they struggle with basic learning, they do very well with concepts. Starting with my son over 25 years go, I discovered you need to teach them the way they think. I use dot patterns for letter and number reversals, as well as for thinking. Decoding word lists for reading and fluency. Give them a formula for paragraph writing and use a system to teach math facts. I tell them that they are really smart, they just think differently and need to be taught a different way. It is amazing to watch them gain confidence and succeed academically. -

The best way to teach a child to read fluently is with word decoding lists. Have the student highlight the small words or sounds within the word with different colored markers. Using this decoding method creates confident, fluent readers in a very short time. -
How did I miss all this?
TAKlinda replied to wy_kid_wrangler04's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Please don't get discouraged, we have all been thru it with our own children and with our students. Children with learning difficulties just need to be taught a little differently to do well in school.
