  1. I expect my son to finish all his courses that he listed in his college application, maintain a 3.0 average, and search for scholarships.
  2. If she likes the taking tests have her take a practice SAT on khan academy and see how she does from there judge whether you want to switch. Would the NM scholarship reduce her other scholarships? If not try. Why couldn't she try the ACT again after she takes more math and english?
  3. He's entering 2020 with an AA and AS. The AA immediately gets put towards his 36 gen. ed credits. because of the program he's going into the AS immediately puts him as a junior. with all his freshman / junior electives taken care of. So all he'll have left is his 300-400 level courses. I checked and matched them up and it works out. Even if he doesn't transfer as a high junior he'll still transfer as a junior (it's guaranteed here.) No, We needed to figure out how to pay for living arrangements before applying. We weren't going to let him apply if there was no way we could cover the cost. See last year the plan was to move in with my SIL and commute from there (15 min. commute) but she moved away. He's now applied and we wait until October. If he does not get in as a FTIC student he will wait a semester and try as a transfer student. If he still does not get in he will look at other schools/majors. If he still does not get in then he will continue to get his BS in Technology at our local state school while living here. It's a bunch of online management classes. He doesn't want to be a manager or take online classes. He wants to be "plugged in" to the campus. He currently doesn't mind the idea of never being in management it's just not his thing even if it pays a lot more. He'd be happy with entry-level and lower pay if it means not being the boss of anyone. He struggles with online classes too and even though his grades are good he doesn't retain much. Depending on the job he can earn up to $10/hr. However he may do better just doing freelance. Work study doesn't get counted against his FA when other income does. He'll have to be real selective with what he applys to. He has a 1:7 chance of getting hired for any FWS job. There are very few jobs in my area for his major so he would be taking that long commute anyway if he lived with us and worked. I'm hoping he makes enough summers that he doesn't have to take out very many loans. Working summers would require a car though. He could use ours in the short run but I don't think he can afford the dorms AND a car.
  4. I would pick 6-10 books, a handful of short stories,Easy Grammar® Ultimate Series and 5-8 well done essays. Then count the hours. 120-150 count as a full credit. Make sure the essays have an outline. first draft, revised draft and final paper.
  5. Yes I would be upset. Honestly I probably would have left, Police don't have time to distinguish is this an altered fake gun or a real gun. It's a safety hazard. Now if they were neon then I wouldn't react as harshly.
  6. I'll have him take an extended time practice. He tried an ACT practice and didn't like it. He's much more of a "work to live" guy. We're going to avoid that if we can but financially we may not be able to avoid it. I like the idea of learning music for him. Hopefully testing will be the first step to get him to where he wants to be.
  7. Honestly he's had so many dx we have no idea what's going on. This will be his second evaluation. He had one about 8 years ago. I don't believe he's ever been tested for a learning disability. He's always been "ahead" even though it takes him all day. He's the one pushing to get tested to find out what's really going on with him. I'm worried because one place said 6 hrs and the other said 4 hrs but the 6 hour place is an hour away and a 6+ month waiting list. The 4 hr one is right here and sees him at the end of the month. He has some SPD symptoms (i just looked them up) What I was saying is OT is usually through the school system and because we home school we don't qualify. It's unlikely our insurance will pay for an OT evaluation. We will try but it looks really complicated. He knows what he wants to do but his pace may be an issue with bosses. That's good to know.
  8. I don't think we'll be able to get SAT accommodations but we will be able to get college accommodations. IF the tests show there's an issue. How do slower students do with working?
  9. I'm going to call the testing center to see exactly what they are testing and see if they can test for learning disabilities too through our insurance. If not I will call the school and find out their process to get him tested. I can have his different Dr.'s write several letters. He just turned 17 and is a senior. They maybe doing an IQ test because it's a 4 hr test. I have to call and find out. We're thinking of having him do 12 at a time too. That's the plan right now. In our state it would be on us to get help. So there would be no OT just us trying to find tricks that help. We'll try the metronome but if I remember correctly he hated the noise but that was 12 years ago.
  10. The school does not do a 504 plan for homeschoolers. I tried a couple years ago. We're getting him re-evaluated for ADHD privately Do I just ask what his processing speed is too? We use to have a metronome but I don't know if we still have I'll look. How reduced is her course load?
  11. We're hoping to have accommodations if he qualifies and proper medication. He does well in school but he takes an enormous amount of time to get anything done.
  12. Not yet, I was asking how to improve his test scores and how he takes 3+times longer to do anything. Someone mentioned processing speed may be slowed. What I've read it sounds like him. He's always taken hours to do things that should take 15 min. We would spend most of the day on Daily Grams when he was younger. Getting dressed takes him about a half hour or longer even if his clothes are set out. Bathroom takes him well over an hour. This wasn't even on our radar. He gets good grades and is in dual enrollment but everything takes him so long to do. We've tried setting timers but all that does is raises his anxiety. Even "rushing" is slow. We always just did modifications our self and were setting it up so college wasn't as stressful. Now that we know the name I can ask questions (and I have a ton.) I do plan to talk to his Dr about this but I for now I'm looking for ways to help him without accommodations.
  13. Other then accommodations what can help increase processing speed?
  14. Can't he just omit the question and recalculate the scores? Yes giving no one the points but I think it's the only thing I can think of.
  15. The state tuition isn't the problem. He has free state tuition and $300 book voucher. The problem is the $5k shortfall for the dorms and the fact working, while in school, may not be possible for him. Now if he can get scholarships to cover that $5k a year, which he is trying. then things will be different. I don't know if it is possible to do a 2 or 3 day schedule but that is something that make commuting more of an option if necessary. He should be able to cover it with subsidized loans as he enters as a junior. Then we'll try paying whatever we can. $125 in loans can be figured out even with a part time job. I really don't like the unsub. loans and the fact if he doesn't pay it off in less then 10 years it's 1.5x the amount of the original loan. I don't like the ideas of loans at all let alone something that bad. I know "It's an investment" and it seems small but to us it's not. I guess if he takes out loans I could always require him to join americorp after for each year he takes out loans. I don't know it's a lot to figure out.
  16. He's planing on getting certificates in different programming languages and different frameworks. However because of how he works he will only take 12 credits at a time, regardless of how long it takes. I don't know how much time he will have to devote to outside classroom activities. He will have the summer hopefully for work. Also I believe he is going to try freelancing. Yes, they all (4 different ones) vary less then $1k in difference for room and board but the travel fees would make those dorms more.
  17. It's the closest state university to us. It lets him transfer all of his credits into the major leaving him with barely 2 years left. Has the cheapest dorm options. If not this university he'll have to stay at our local State college for a degree he doesn't want (also would only take him 2 years.)
  18. It'll take 2 years because of the sequence of classes. However he will barely be full time. All he has to do is complete the 300/400 courses. There's private schools and a State College. The state college has an online tech management degree but only 2 college's in the state have IA BS degree's. Most IA programs are masters programs. All other programs will take him longer to get through because of their pre-recs. It's only ~30 miles away but traffic is horrible. I think anywhere else will cost him more money. The only reason he wouldn't live on campus is the cost is is significantly higher than commuting.
  19. They only need 30 hours at that university to receive their degree. His CC says they have to accept his GE classes if he gets an AA and the degree says they have to have their AS to be admitted to the particular program because their AS is their first 2 years. It'll extend his graduation date by a semester if they don't accept the GE credits. It says they accept all AS degree classes from CC's. I figure between getting a car, gas, insurance, AAA, parking permit, ect. It'll cost him around $6k instead of $11 k but the next year that cost would decrease meaning he wouldn't have to take out the $5.5k in loans a year. Yes I'm stressing over $11k in loans because that's a lot and it's about $15k in the end with interest and fees. I don't want him to start off with that much debt. If I could I'd do a plus loan for him but we can't afford that.
  20. It would be $11k debt total Dorms are 1/2 covered by grants, 1/2 loans. He would take our car until he got his grant and buy a cheap car with that. He has no savings at all. Not in his major He'll have 96 transferable credits when going so he'll only need 48 credits at the University.
  21. She can check if they transfer before attending. If not I'd say take the semester off to investigate what schools she really wants to attend and apply there.
  22. If she has to take general ed classes can't she take a semester at a community college while waiting for the spring? That's what I would do.
  23. Drop it. As much as she wants to get it done it doesn't sound like she'll learn what she needs from this teacher.
