  1. Thank You... For all the suggestions and encouraging words. I so appreciate all the help and I am encouraged to continue on with a greatful heart. Connie
  2. I'm not sure where to start or how to explain what I am wanting to ask, so I guess I just start. My son is a junior and we have homeschooled his entire school years. We homeschooled not because I thought I could give him a better education, but that our schools were in such bad shape (the students, not the teachers). My son informed me that he wants to go to our local Community College for training in sound tech. After seeing samples of the SAT & ACT, I really don't believe he would be able to come no where near the scores that would be required for a university. I checked with the Community College and she informed me all he would have to take is the Compass Test (which is a placement test I think that is comparable to a THEA test). Bless his heart, he has never done well in algebra or writing. I am wanting to take what is left of his junior and senior years to prepare him for the college entrance exam. I found a THEA (which I guess is mainly for Texas students) prep book and was wondering if the best way to prepare is just go through this book? I would appreciate any suggestions on what we should do or how I should approach this. I sure do feel like I dropped the ball and somehow failed my son with his education. Thanks for listening, Connie
  3. I would very much like to have your suggestions on which math to use. My son is 11th grade. He did very well in pre-algebra, but we have never really seemed to get very far with Algebra I. I have a complete set of Videotext A-F (VHS) and Lial's Intro & Lial's Interm Algebra books w/dvts (my oldest son used Lial when he had to take developmental math at college, so I saved them). As you can see, another son who didn't do so well in math at home. We used Teaching Textbooks for prealgebra, and it worked fine. When we tried TT for algebra I, it didn't work so well. I started tyring to work in videotext and lial for the remainder of the year and quickly noticed, these two have different teaching techniques (ex. add a negative as opposed to just saying subtract from both sides, etc). I am wanting to start at the beginning of either Videotext or Lial introductory. However, I don't know which one. I want the one that gives the best explanation and easiest to understand, since I don't feel he ever really grasped the concepts from the start. I am in no way a math person...I see things I like and dislike in both programs. I am totally confused and tired of switching in the middle of the year. As it stands now, my son says he doesn't want to go to college, BUT I do want him to take the SAT or ACT. We only have 2 years left and if nothing else, I would want him to have at least a good foundation in algebra I. Sorry this is so long. Thanks for your help, Connie
  4. So with these prep books, do we just pick one and start at the beginning??? It would be really helpful if there was a syllabus on some or one of these books. How do I know which test my son should take, if our college will take both SAT & ACT?? Connie
  5. Thanks Ladies, For Sat I have Sparknotes The New Sat, Barron's Math Workbook. For Act Research & Education Association and Barron's Act. So far in math, we are in Algebra I. I am using a of combination Videotext and Lial Introductory. Sometimes one or the other will explain it better for my son's understanding. For english we use Shurley and Easy Grammar, again a combination of the two. Sometimes he needs a little more detail of concepts so I will use the EG. Not much formal writing. However, I have purchased the Kaplan Sat writing workbook and was planning on starting that with our SAT/ACT studies. My son is NOT a reader. I have tried with books that might interest him and he just doesn't care to read, so I quit trying to make his reading separate. We use ACE paces for World History and will for American History and that is about the extent of his reading. We were part of a co-op and he had some physical science and biology there, even though I don't feel it was benefial (it was like all open book learning including tests) since only 2 sciences are required at our college, my husband said he only had to take what was required. I don't blame anyone but myself for all the mistakes that were made during our years of homeschooling. When we first started, I knew it wasn't because I was so qualified to teach and could do a better job than our local teachers. It was because our schools were going down so fast (mainly because of students). They were starting to get bad when I went to them and I knew that by the time I had childrend it would be much worse. So, our homeschooling was more for protection than for education, if that makes sense. So, that is our story in a nutshell.... Thanks for listening, Connie
  6. I was planning on starting my 10th grade son on preparing for the SAT or ACT. Was going to start including this in his school for the remainder of the year, into some of the summer, and finishing in the Fall so he could take one or both of these tests his 11th grade year. I purchase study guide books for each of these tests and I am completely terrified. None of it looks like anything we have covered in our school years, especially the math!!! I wouldn't even be able to take these tests and hope to pass with a low score so I can't imagine my son being able to. We have used Shurley Grammar and my son did really well in this, but after looking at the grammar portion in these study guides I don't know of what use it will be. Math has always been a struggle for him as well as reading comprehension, so the reading and the science portion is unbelieveable. I really don't know what to do. I am sooo down right now, I don't even want to finish the rest of homeschooling. I feel like I have let my son down and can't understand where I went wrong. I just don't understand how these kids can pass these tests. Our city has a University so I felt it was such a blessing that our son would be able to stay home and go to school here. It even accepts either SAT or Act so I thought he could even take both, but now I just don't know. Please help, I don't know what I'm going to do other than cry right now. Connie
  7. I have the opportunity to borrow either the Videotext Series A-F or the Teaching Textbooks Algebra I & II. Which would you recommend and why??? Thanks for your help, I just can't decide. Connie
  8. I'm glad you asked this question to see some of the answers, but there is no way I'm replying to this one. (I do like it when the house is quiet):001_huh:
  9. http://www.freerice.com/ It make me feel like I'm not completely wasting my time and hopefully it does feed the hungry!!
  10. Still playing, I think I figured it out!!!!
  11. Just trying to learn how to quote!!!!
  12. I am so sorry to hear this. I can't image the pain that everyone is going through. Will pray for all!!
  13. Don't have any advice but hope it all works out for you. That is a tough decision that I never had to make.
  14. We do 4 days. My son is in high school so most of his school work he does on his own. If he is not finished with his weekly schedule then any left over work is done on Friday. I take my mom to do her weekly shopping on Friday, so it helps for me to have this day off also.
  15. Let's rethink this snake situation for a minute...snake in the garage, no more doing the laundry. Just might work!!!! Which do I hate more...snakes or laundry????
  16. Do you have a website for the consultant??? Just curious to see the site!
  17. I would be interested in this too. Trying to decide which math to use and since I have Jacobs a schedule would help.
  18. I agree, I would only spend what you can afford. I think a real nice picture frame would be a good gift also, especially if you don't know them that well. Once the wedding pictures come in, I'm sure she would appreciate a nice frame to put her favorite in.
  19. Here in Texas, my central air never kicks off. All day long it runs until about 8:30 at night. Then it will start kicking on and off. I dread my electric bill each month and am so looking forward to fall!!!
  20. Oh, I'm sooo sorry for you, but I am also sorry I read this post!! Now I can't quit thinking about snakes. I am always afraid one will be in my house since we have woods around us. I have heard that they hate mothballs too. It's almost worth having a stinky yard for a guard around the house. You are very nice...forget animal control, I would have that thing killed!! Hope it works out for you.
  21. I hadn't heard about this, I've been watching the weather channel (we are in Edouard's track). Hate to hear this about Mr. Freeman. He is one of my favorites also.
  22. How thoughtful!!! Even if he could cook, I would prefer smores over supper any ole time!!
