  1. Not really. At this point he's proficient enough that he just works on whatever he wants to. Right now, he's working on a couple of different games just to see if he can make them work/to test out his skills. He also occasionally teams up with his older brother to code various ad-ons and anti-cheats for their favorite Roblox games.
  2. Math: MM6 History: BYL 5 - US History Part 1 Literature: BYL 5 + a handful of book reports Science: Science Mom Earth Science plus some sort of Astronomy Unit. Grammar: Junior Analytical Grammar Writing: Write Shop F + Evan Moor's Writing Fabulous Sentences and Paragraphs Spelling: Spellwell C/CC Art: Nothing super formal but I do want to set aside a time each week to simply make art. I'm thinking of doing a month each of various things: drawing, pastels, water colors, acrylic paint, clay/sculpting etc Other: Various classes through our homeschool group Brush up on his typing skills Duolingo for fun/exposure He likes to keep active: running, rollerblading, ice skating, ninja warrior type obstacle courses etc
  3. Tentative plans for DS12: Math: He's nearly finished with MM7 so we'll probably be covering Algebra 1. I have both AOPS and Lial's sitting on my shelf so we need to look through those and decide what will be a better fit for him. World Geography: BYL 7 Literature: BYL 7 + a handful of book reports Grammar: Daily Grams 6 Spelling: Spellwell D/DD Writing: Write Shop F + Evan Moor's Writing Fabulous Sentences & Paragraphs Science: He's asked for a General Science "review" before he heads into High School so I'm going to pull something together for him with Everything You Need to Ace Science in One Big Fat Notebook + our collection of science encyclopedias as a jumping off point. Art: a basic study of famous artists worked in with his geography studies + a set amount of time each week to just make art. I'm thinking a month each on things like drawing, pastels, water colors, acrylic paints, clay etc Other: Cursive - ??? Probably just a "non babyish" workbook off of Amazon Duolingo Coding projects for fun Whatever classes strike his fancy through our homeschool group He also really wants to up his baking game - get better at cakes and cookies and to start tackling things like pretzels, bagels, croissants/pastries etc. So we'll be spending more time in the kitchen together!
  4. My oldest will be in 9th grade this year and emotionally I am not ready. On a practical level though we're doing pretty good. Math gave us some trouble towards the end of last year but I think I have that figured out for the immediate future. Math: Finish up Algebra 1 using Key to Algebra plus AOPS (this will probably take us through Christmas) Start Geometry. Text undecided yet. I have a few on their way so we can take a look at them. Science: Oak Meadow Environmental Science History: Prehistory using Build Your Library level 9 + various documentaries and some Khan Academy English: Daily Grams for grammar review. Oak Meadow Composition 1. Build Your Library level 9 for literature and literature analysis. Computer Science: Khan Academy's AP Computer Science Principles as a sort of formal framework/lecture. Various coding assignments set by DH + all the coding and coding/tech research DS does for fun on a daily basis. Art: Art History via Khan Academy + various books I have on the shelves (1 semester) Drawing (1 semester) plus any art classes he takes with our homeschool group. Other: various classes with our homeschool group (he tends to pick things like art, robotics, theater, logic, literature), Duolingo for fun, swimming/jogging/hiking.
  5. DD is technically in 3rd grade this year but she's all over the place, ability wise. She's dyslexic and has some other visual-auditory processing issues that have made her school experience very different than her brothers'. She's a trooper though and I'm so proud of all the effort she puts into her work. History, Literature, and Science are done combined with her younger (1st grade) brother. Math: Horizons 2. Depending on how quickly we move through it we might even get to 3. Science: Mom made evolution/dino unit study + RS4K Elementary Biology + Nature Study. We'll probably do a grow-a-frog and/or butterfly kit in the spring. History: Build Your Library 1/SOTW 1 (Ancient History) Literature: Build Your Library 1 (modified) Reading/Phonics: OPGTR + Reading Eggs + various beginning readers + a lot of multi-sensory activities + sight word drills and activities Handwriting/Art: Draw Write Now 1 & 2 Grammar: FLL 2 (orally) Various other electives/activities with our homeschool group. This fall she is doing a cooking class and a nature exploration/art class. I also promised that I would give her sewing lessons.
  6. DS #3 is my 5th grader this year. He's a "very classic presenting" ADHD and does best with short, focused lessons. We still do about 50% of his assignments orally. History, Literature, Science, and Writing are combined with his older (7th grade) brother. Math: Math Mammoth 5 Science: RS4K Middle School Physics + various books + unit studies from TPT History: Build Your Library 4/ SOTW 4 (History of the Modern World) Literature: Build Your Library 4 + a couple of book reports and/or literature guides from TPT Grammar: Finish up Easy Grammar 3 and move to 4. Spelling: Spellwell BB/C/CC Writing: Write Shop E + various writing assignments from History, Literature, and Science Art: Drawing Various other electives with our homeschool group. This fall he's taking Intro to Archaeology and Outdoors Sports & Rec.
  7. DS #4 will officially be in 1st grade this year. He's my more-obviously-on-the-spectrum kid so formal, sit-down schoolwork is generally short, quick and to the point (unless he's really focused in on it for the day, in which case we might do several days' worth in one sitting) and supplemented with a lot of informal, play based learning directed by whatever he's currently interested in. Science, history, and literature will be combined with his older (3rd grade) sister and I'm not expecting much beyond him listening in and taking part in any fun projects/experiments. Math: Finish the last bit of Math in Focus K and...??? The plan is to go to Math Mammoth 1 but he might find it too visually overwhelming, in which case I'll probably bounce back to Singapore. Reading/Phonics: OPGTR + finish Get Ready for the Code B and move on to C + Reading Eggs + Bob Books and similar readers Handwriting: We haven't done any formal handwriting up to this point so I have both HWOT PreK and K. We'll see how far we get! Science: Mom made evolution/dino unit study + RS4K Elementary Biology + nature study. We'll probably do a grow-a-frog and/or butterfly kit in the spring.   8. DS #2 is a young 7th grader who is a voracious reader and a reluctant writer. Science, History, Literature, and Writing will be combined with his younger brother (5th grade) with beefed up assignments where necessary. Math: Finish the last little bit of Math Mammoth 6 and move on to 7 Science: RS4K Middle School Physics + an assortment of books + some unit studies from TPT History: Build Your Library 4/ SOTW 4 (History of the Modern World) Literature: Build Your Library 4 + a couple of lit guides from TPT + a couple of book reports Grammar: Finish up Daily Grams 5 and move on to Daily Grams 6 Spelling: Spellwell CC/D/DD Writing: Write Shop E + various writing assignments across Science, History, and Literature Art: Drawing Spanish: Duolingo. This is mostly just for fun/exposure. Various other electives with our homeschool group. This fall he's doing Intro to Archaeology and 3D Modeling Art.
  9. I didn't see one of these for 5th grade yet! What is everyone planning? My oldest will be in 5th grade this upcoming school year and we've reached a lovely point where we actually talk about what works and doesn't work about what we're using/how we're using it. Honestly, it has made planning so much easier. Math: Teaching Textbooks 6 with MM as a supplement. After 3.5 blissful years of Math Mammoth, DS just burnt out on it. He still really likes the way it's written/explains things but the layout was getting overwhelming for him, even with a significant number of problems crossed out. He also really wanted something computer based but that had review built in "like his grammar" (Saxon). We've been doing TT5 with reinforcement pulled from MM4 for the past couple months and that has seemed to work out really well for him. I figure we'll continue it for the next year and I'll keep a close eye on things. Grammar/Writing: finish up the last quarter of Saxon Grammar and Writing 4 and then start 5. He'll also be doing some writing in other subjects (reading/lit, history, science). Spelling: I've got Spelling Workout E sitting on my shelves but we're debating between that and Megawords 1. Reading/Lit: List of books (that I'm still putting together). We'll discuss them and I'll require some narration/summary work from him as well. History/Geography: We're doing a year of US History/Geography as a family. I haven't found anything I love so I'm kind of putting together my own thing. Crossing my fingers that it goes well. Science: Either Oak Meadow Science 5 or Mr. Q Advanced Earth Science. I keep going back and forth because we've taken a pretty relaxed approach to science for the last 4 years, which has been great but has also resulted in a science education heavily weighted towards Biology/Earth Science. So on one hand I like the idea of Oak Meadow which seems to be a general science overview but DS has really loved Mr. Q and I wonder/worry about trying to fix something that isn't broken. Plus, then he'd be doing the same science as his younger brothers and it'd be easier to do experiments and activities together. I really should just need to practice what I brag about and show him examples of both and let him decide. Other: field trips and art classes with our homeschool group, typing, coding projects with (or directed by) dad, plus read alouds and a general art/music overview/ appreciation with everyone.
  10. Son #2 will be in 3rd grade next year. So far my plan is: Math: Math Mammoth 3. It's still working for him so I'm going by the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset. Grammar: FLL 2 Writing: CAP: Fable plus bits of narration/diction/copy work in other areas Handwriting: Pen Time Spelling: ??? No. Clue. I haven't done any formal spelling with him yet. He needs a different approach than his older brother (who loves workbooks) and I've got AAS1 sitting on my shelves so maybe I'll just use that? Reading: his reading has grown by leaps and bounds this past year and I'm so proud of him. He has the fluency and now he just needs the confidence to go with it. I think I'm going to put together a couple lists of books - some more "on level/challenging" ones for us to read together and some easier, fun ones for him to read by himself. History/Geography: We're doing a year of US History and Geography as a family. Science: Mr Q Earth Science Other: Field trips and art classes with our homeschool group, typing, plus read alouds and a general art/music study as a family. We've got a lot of stuff happening in the next 3-6 months (new baby, moving etc) so my mantra for the rest of this year and all of next is "Keep it simple. Cut out the busywork. Don't overthink it."
  11. Son #3 will be in first grade next year and he has such a different learning style compared to his older brothers. The first half of his K year was spent trying to figure out how in the world to connect with/teach him. He's very high energy and needs short, focused lessons that are interactive and (despite his general love for writing and drawing on his own) don't require a lot of workbooks/writing on his part. He's very smart but super stubborn and can get overwhelmed easily. School goes much smoother if I can just fit it in to regular discussion/play or frame it as games or activities within things that he likes/hold his interest. Right now we're just playing out the rest of K by working through 100 EZ lessons for reading and Life of Fred: Apples. My current plan for 1st looks something like: Math: Math U See: Alpha (and maybe/probably Beta because I suspect that - as long as I can get him to focus - we'll go through Alpha fast) Reading: Continue on with 100EZ lessons and utilize all the various phonics readers that are lying around. My main goal for first grade is to get him reading fluently. Handwriting: I'll probably just pick up something like The Complete Book of Handwriting or do my own thing. Stuff that's very low stress and that he can do as something "fun" and doesn't necessarily register in his mind as "school". Writing: Work on basic narration skills. Nothing formal. Grammar: I might start FLL1 during the second half of the year but I'll probably put off formal grammar until 2nd grade. That approach has worked well for his older brothers. Science: Mr. Q Earth Science History/Geography: We'll be doing a one year study of US History and Geography as a family. Other: field trips and art lessons with our homeschool group, plus read alouds and a basic study of art and music as a family.
