  1. My 9 yo DD does the following independently: handwriting review spelling words assigned reading the review section of CLE math and she has a few Evan Moor books she works through mostly on her own, with my input if she needs it. Right now she has Daily Science, Daily Geography, and Critical Thinking Skills. My DD loves working from a checklist and does good job working independently. I think this is just part of who she is/her personality. She knows what she has to do and gets it done. Her almost 11 yo brother however doesn’t work this way at all. I still have to sit at his elbow for everything except handwriting.
  2. I use the FAN process skills on grade level and the word problems a year behind. Singapore was a bust here too. I feel like these books are “the best” of Singapore style math.
  3. I use FAN Process Skills and Challenging Word Problems with CLE. The Process Skills books really helped my son shore up some iffy skills between levels.
  4. Purse, truck, nightstand, kitchen, church bag, on the cart that holds school stuff. Yeah...6 pair. I really can’t see.
  5. I’ve glanced at Master Books 3rd grade LA. It’s short lessons and pretty gentle. I haven’t used it myself, but a friend does and raves about it. DD did CLE LA 3 for 3rd. It was not gentle or light. Pretty hard core grammar for a 3rd grader. We did WWE 2 alongside. While they did learn how to write a paragraph, the writing is lacking in CLE. The one of the positives about CLE is it written to the student. With that and the tight spiral, she could do it mostly by herself.
  6. Ragu Tomato, Garlic, and Onion is my favorite sauce. I also use a blend of Italian cheeses. I think the cheese blend ups the flavor.
  7. Try soaking them in peroxide overnight. I use about half a bottle per load. I just pour it over in the washer as it’s filling and let it swish around a few times, then open the lid until the next day. It works wonders on DH’s T-shirt’s and socks, which are 100% cotton. Another day of hanging in the sun wouldn’t hurt either. HTH.
  8. I didn’t know about Japanese American internment camps during WWII until I was in my 30’s. I read a book that had a small reference to it. I had no idea.
  9. I’m in. No spend is a little extreme for me, but I’m all about saving money where I can and using up what I have. We had a death in the family this week. Today I’m cooking what I have on hand for a family lunch. Squash from friend’s garden and peas from our garden and blueberry muffins with blueberries from our bushes.
  10. You should plan on 4 oz of meat per person. Unless you have oversized buns then 6 oz. So you’ll need at least 25 lbs of meat. If you have a roaster oven, that would be ideal, as they cook large amounts. They look like a big crock pot, but use higher heat, usually 18-25 quarts.
  11. You’re doing great so far! I’ve been involved in the wedding industry for the past 10+ years. Here’s my recommendations: Linens: www.tableclothfactory.com Much less expensive to buy new versus renting. Their polyester linens are the same quality you would be renting. You’ll need to google the dimensions you need so you can order the right sizes. Also check Craigslist or Facebook market place for people reselling. Beautiful disposable tableware and cutlery: www.smartyhadaparty.com Instead of disposable stemware, Dollar Tree sells plain wine glasses. They can be ordered by the case online. They’ll need to be washed and the stickers taken off, but at $1 each. It’s worth the effort over disposal stemware. I’ve never seen any disposable stemware that looks nice. As far as catering goes, that’s so dependent on location I don’t know if I have a good recommendation for that. Check with local restaurants. If they won’t deliver or set up, you can buy disposable chaffer stands and Sternos at Sam’s Club or a party supply store. But food served buffet style will be cheaper than a served meal. Far cheaper. Alcohol: serve iced down in containers. When it’s gone, it’s gone. The potty situation is ridiculous at this venue. But what’s done is done. Just get as many quotes as you can. Call around in the city also. Some companies won’t have a problem delivering 50 miles away. I hope some of this is helpful.
