Please don't do the bolded unless the caller gives all of the pertinent info to the agency they call. With what has been described it could quickly escalate into a dangerous situation for everyone involved. Domestic situations are already extremely dangerous for LEOs and others.

We always check the central heating returns and vents. If they're dirty, we wonder whether the homeowner kept up with regular maintenance for that and the rest of the house.

Guys working at our house - etiquette for hospitality
Starfish replied to Familia's topic in The Chat Board
We always offer water or coffee if it's really early. If it's a big job, I leave a basket of snacks -- prepackaged snack crackers and fruit. We also let them know where the bathroom is. A few workers have used the bathroom and lots of them have accepted the coffee. Snacks and water are usually refused. -
Dd's dual enrollment French class won't make because of numbers. She's already completed her language requirements so French isn't something she has to take but would like to take. While we could use Duolingo or Rosetta Stone, dd would really like a class where she has interaction with others. I've checked with organizations in the community but am only finding children's classes. We're open to an online class or outside of the box suggestions. The goal is for this to be more of a fun elective than a heavy class. Any suggestions?

How much time for cleaning/organizing your house?

Yes to unloading the dishwasher in 3 minutes! I totally hate that task so I set my timer for 3 minutes and try to beat it. Most of the time I do. I loathe it that much. lol -
Young Adult (not a student) Living at Home - How do you . . .
Starfish replied to Jenny in Florida's topic in The Chat Board
Dh and I meet twice a month for bill paying and budgeting. We invited our two sons. After the first meeting ,both said just give me a total. We compromised and give them the bills, and they have to calculate the totals. The thing they hate most is the different billing cycles. They can't just make one payment. It's several over the course of the month. They pay in cash and we give a detailed receipt. Getting a receipt is a valid life skill, too. -
Young Adult (not a student) Living at Home - How do you . . .
Starfish replied to Jenny in Florida's topic in The Chat Board
We've always had our young adults ( not attending college ) pay their share ( 1/6 ) of the utilities -- electric, water, internet, and sewer. It's not a lot but it gets them used to looking at usage and lowering the bill. They also take care of their own cars, car insurance, clothing, and personal items. We've always kept paying for the same basic family cell phone plans. We can afford the groceries so we don't charge anything there. They buy stuff like protein powders and craft beer because we consider that a personal item. We like Dave Ramsey, but totally disagree with him when he talks about kids moving out at 18. We're happy to have our young adults living at home saving for a hefty home down payment. We'd be okay with them living at home until they could pay 100% for a home. If they weren't saving and just taking advantage, we'd have to come up with a plan B. ETA: None of our kids has attended a trade school or apprenticed for a trade. If they did, we'd treat it the same as if they're going to college. -

Yes, I probably am this quick for most loads. Our work and dress clothes that need to be hung take longer and so do the underclothes. It seems to take forever to match socks. -

We did Flylady years ago and learned good routines and decluttering skills. Flylady was probably 2-3 hours a day when I was working hard to declutter. I couldn't go as slow as she suggested. After we decluttered and gave everything a "home", cleaning takes about 2 hours a week. I'm not counting laundry because we sort into the hampers, and I do a load when a hamper is full. It's maybe 10-15 minutes total hands-on per load. I do a load from start to finish before starting another one. I'm also not counting daily repeating things like meal prep/clean-up or our quick pick-up/ put away stuff before dinner which is about 15 min per day. Lawn care is maybe an hour a week. -
If you have a garbage disposal, check out the insert that covers the drain. Really nasty gunk can build up between the top edge of the insert and the drain.

I’m annoyed by what I view as an unnecessary purchase
Starfish replied to Ginevra's topic in The Chat Board
My prim and proper elderly grandmother had her purse stolen in a parking lot in broad daylight a few years ago. She now only carries a small man's wallet that will fit in a pocket or the waistband of her slacks. It's one of the really old ones that has a hook for keys on one side. Some of her female friends have made not nice comments, but she's determined to not carry a purse anymore. -

It feels awkward to post this late in the thread, but this sentence caught my attention. As someone who grew up rough and neglected, I'm trying to quit expecting my children to be grateful for their safe lifestyle. They're terrific kids who are hardworking, caring, and appreciative. They just don't have the same life experience that I do. Some days it rankles me but overall I'm truly thankful that we've been able to provide for our family. I hope you find some peace and get some sleep. -
Volunteering for an organization that benefits your kids

Our homeschool group started this a few years ago, and most of us really like this new approach. We didn't realize how busy and stressed we were until we stopped making sure that every event happened every year. It's been good for us. -
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be contradictory or secretive. The idea was hosting a 1950's party. It started out with food and games from that decade and a couple of people dressed up and we had fun. Every year after that it's been a different decade ( we have repeated the 50's and the 70's ) and once a "future" party. People seem to look forward to it, and it's grown to include a food competition and a costume competition some years. The first year I signed up to host was because no one else would host in January after the holidays, and I wanted to be helpful. The next year was the same. Having people over is hard for me. I'd much rather read a book than get together. This has been good though because I've gotten to know more people and made some friends. Edited to say my original post sounded braggy to me when i reread it. I really meant it as being surprised that the idea is popular and that people want to come.

Erased the post because it wasn't clear . Explained below.

We purchase "dorm vaults" for our freshmen to keep valuables in. Birth certificates and passports stay at our home unless they're needed. They'd probably be safe on campus, but we've just always kept them in our file safe.

Thanks so much! I just ordered a rash guard and swim shorts.
