  1. I'm so glad you posted this! This is what we do, and people who come over are always exclaiming over it which makes me self-conscious. We do it because it smells good and is on hand, not because it's "special". You've made me feel more normal. lol
  2. The bolded is sheer genius!
  3. If ibuprofen doesn't give good results, try naproxen ( Aleve ). That's what worked well for our family.
  4. No, not terrible! I think I probably drive my kids a little batty with all of the mothering I do. lol
  5. Yep. This was us when #3 went to college. It took a bit to learn to cook and buy less food. I love when all of the kids are home, and I can cook lots and lots of food! It makes me so happy to feed them.
  6. Most of our household bills have gone down considerably. So far all of the kids have gotten full scholarships including books and fees. That helped tremendously. We do find ourselves spending more on home maintenance. We used to tackle most all of our projects ourselves, but we've gotten older and the kids aren't here to help anymore. It also helped that they all went to college within a few hours drive of home so there weren't any large travel expenses.
  7. How about a simple cornbread dressing? You can make the cornbread with cornmeal and buttermilk. I make the cornbread the day before, and crumble with sage, celery, and onions the next day. Then I add chicken broth to cover it and bake in the oven.
  8. This. The event and its rules are probably listed on the sponsors website. You might also want to check with Walgreens and your local police department. In our area, they both have a locked box ( kind of like a library dropbox ) where we can drop prescription drugs.
  9. We'd be totally good with MIL ( FIL is deceased ) visiting a couple of times a month. We all get along and work well as a family unit. I think if we were to do a 2x monthly visit, it would need to be more of an inviting her to join the family rather than vacation time. I could see myself being not happy if I had to entertain folks that often.
  10. We usually do sandwiches or bagels w/ cream cheese for early morning flights. If we're getting up super early for a flight, I make a green smoothie for all of us to drink at home, then pack snacks like nuts and/or chickpeas.
  11. Oh yum! That sounds so good and quick!
  12. I make this too, but without the crusts. Everyone loves it. I'll have to try the crusts to kick it up a notch! I think my recipe came form a Walgreen's Family Cookbook.
  13. The Word Finder was recommended by our IEW instructor. She preferred it because it has more words. Our copy is well-worn and well-loved. https://www.amazon.com/Word-Finder-J-I-Rodale/dp/0878571388/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1538598611&sr=8-2&keywords=the+word+finder#customerReviews ETA: My children were teens when it was recommended and didn't need as much help with choosing synonyms. The Word Finder suggests modifiers to go with the words you've already chosen.
  14. Amazon has options that you can look at. I bought one of the cheaper mesh ring slings and sent it back. It was flimsy. After that I would just use my regular ring sling since we were mostly by the pool or just wading near the zero entry. Do you have a local babywearer's group? Sometimes they have lending libraries of carriers.
  15. Excellent advice! I have several of these from when oldest ds was a teen. He's now 33. Some of the greatest advice we've gotten though, is from SWB in Cincy years ago. She gave a great talk about teens that included naps, showers, and sandwiches. It was the same talk where she shared about her kids not being able to find things and hitting them with it when she did -- all in a fun, comical manner of course! Our family still says: "If I find it, can I hit you with it? " I think it may be a podcast but didn't see it in the store. Maybe someone else remembers the talk and the name.
  16. We're currently decluttering again. The last is off to college next year, and we've lived in our home for nineteen years. We started in the garage with obvious items like leftover paint from ten years ago, the large chest freezer, extra sports equipment, etc. We knew we wouldn't need those things again. Then I started using up the extra things like detergent, shampoo, soap, etc. I had always kept extra but don't need to keep as much on hand since we're a smaller family now. Those two things have opened up a lot of space. Now I really need to pare down the toys and books that I've kept for the grandkids. That's been much harder to do!
  17. Probably because of bragging rights. I'd be angry like the OP but hopefully not admit to it -- and would probably fail miserably at that. The next time a hurricane rolls around, I'd try to completely ignore their woes.
  18. We have a first tier beach house and use a rental company. I'm not up to the risk and expense of beachfront. The rents cover expenses. Personally, I'd buy the one with the beach view. Sitting in the porch swing and looking at the ocean is my favorite thing to do. Renting at the beach is all about the view and distance to the beach. You might find using your home in the off season is more pleasant. We've always rented out the summer season until one year I declared to dh that we were going to go the beach in July and really enjoy our house! It was miserable -- tourist town in full swing and crowded beaches. We now do our beach vacations in mid May after classes are done and mid August before they start. We also spend scattered weeks during the offseason and two in January. It works for us. I can't say that I'm thrilled with renting it out, but it pays the bills on the house that we wanted and makes a closer retirement possible.
  19. I like the NCBI website: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov for reading the studies associated with vaccines. Meningitis is one that we've always gotten. The loss of life and limb is all too real.
  20. You could also try a slim cut jean which are made in regular and slim sizes. You'll find those more readily in stores. Depending on where you live, your Wal-Mart or Tractor Supply may have cowboy cut Wranglers in stock. They're usually a more slim fitting jean. I'm no help with the long arms. Ds' sleeves were perpetually short until he was older and could wear a larger size. He seriously had to grow into his arms ?
  21. Do you have a doggy daycare nearby? Like you, we've had our older dog since the kids were little, and I was at home nearly all of the time. He's alone a lot more than we'd like these days. Doggy daycare a couple of times a week has been a good fit for us. Maybe it would work for your family too.
  22. Yes, the police can and usually do welfare checks. Police officers aren't immune to needing the details in order to minimize risk and keep everyone safe. My only point is that whoever is called for a welfare check should be given all of the pertinent details, esp since weapons are involved. I'm sorry if I sound contrary, I don't mean to be.
