  1. There are lots of fun little kits at Walmart or Michaels that would be a fun starting point. Applique and simple cross stitch would be a fun place to start. Knitting and crochet are wonderful...but you don't see satisfying results right away. That might be best started a little later?? I don't know, just my 2 cents. My Wren started knitting at age 11 and won't stop. She started out knitting hats on round looms which ended up leading to knitting with needles. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Boye-Loom-Tool-Set-Circular/17331480 https://www.michaels.com/search?q=applique kit https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dimensions-Felt-Decor-Applique-Kit-Unicorn/249481001 https://www.michaels.com/default/10108687.html#q=dimensions+counted+cross+stitch&pmpt=qualifying&sz=24&start=32 Thank you so much for posting about this book. I think my Wren would love it!! Did you know there's a second book now? I think I'll have to get both. 😀 http://www.forestfairycrafts.com/
  2. I did finally email BF and got a reply. I'll post it here in case it helps anyone else who might be trying to decide between the old and the new History of Science. Here's what Josh said: "Our new History of Science set was a thorough revision. We added six new books to the study and also completely rewrote the study guide. Of the six new books the most important was replacing The Way Things Work with The Way Science Works. This new title fits our course much better, includes much more information than only new inventions and also has tons of hands-on experiments that we incorporate into the study. The new study, in addition to covering the history of many scientists and inventors also has more of a focus on demonstrating important scientific principles. Also one of the reasons we replaced so many books is because Explorabook and Albert Einstein Young Thinker both fell out of print and in the 21 years since the guide was written some pretty great books have become available. Also, as the study guide was originally written in 1997 it was in need of much revision and updating. We have gone through most of our other study guides and updated them with new notes, web links, vocabulary, answer keys, hands-on activities, and background information that makes them easier to use and more enjoyable.Hope that helps give you an idea of the difference between our old and new studies. I would definitely recommend going with the new course if you have the option."
  3. Have you considered Cover Story? I'm going to try that with dd next school year. I hope she'll find it fun and something to look forward to doing. I think she'll like the dvd's and the journal. ETA: I'm so glad I read your post and linked Cover Story. I went to their site to get you the link and I see they have another writing program called Byline. It's for 8th - 12th though, but it looks great too! I'll keep that in mind for the near future.
  4. Question: Do you all have your kids work through these books on their own, or do you work with your child?? I'm thinking I need something like this for my daughter to work through somewhat independently. We have way too much that I need to work with her on...mama bird needs a bit of a break. ? So, I'm curious to hear what you all do. Thanks!
  5. Yes, I could do that. Thank you for reminding me of that. I'll see what I can come up with.
  6. When you click on "History of Science Study Guide - Revised Ed" at RR, there will be 3 tabs; Description, Reviews, and Q & A. It was under the Q & A. Click that tab and you'll see a post by Mischele P on Nov 23, 2015 with the comment I quoted. I'll think about emailing BF. I'm not exactly sure they'll be overly helpful with what I'd like to know. But, maybe I'll try. I could at least ask what books they've deleted / added. I'll post their answer if I decide to ask them.
  7. Hmm..I'll think about it. I guess I'm not sure what exactly to ask the publisher. I could ask for the book list, but I was also hoping to hear feedback on preferences between the old vs new. I'm not sure if BF will be overly helpful on that. But, I'll consider it. ETA: When I said, "I'll think about it" I meant regarding emailing them. As for looking at the BF site, yes I've been there and made a list of all the books to use with the new guide. I'm hoping to find them cheap on eBay or use the library. I'll probably have to at least purchase the guide book, probably from RR . I did look at some pictures of the inside of the old guide on eBay to compare with samples of the new (couldn't see a book list though). The old is definitely...."old school" looking. Which I kinda am. But, I might want to go with the new. At this point I just don't even know. I guess I will take your suggestion and contact BF to see if they can tell me more specifically what has changed between the new and old. If it's just in looks, I can get the old guide cheaper. Thank you for the reply Ellie.
  8. Oh look! Each time I post it says something new. When my first post said "Just Visiting" I thought, "Huh?? I hope I can stay". Now it says Hive Mind Larvae. I guess I'm growing with each post. I'm happy to be here. I will try to resist the urge to keep posting to see what it says next. ?
  9. I'm back, because I thought maybe I should introduce myself. I'm mom to daughter Wren. I homeschooled years ago and am about to jump back into the saddle. Giddyup! ?
  10. I have a question about Beautiful Feet History of Science. I see they have a new revised and updated edition (not sure when this new one came out). At the Rainbow Resource website someone made this comment: "I like BF guides and I wanted to get the old, good one before RR switched to the new edition which uses books that I am not comfortable with." I'm assuming this comment is regarding History of Science, since it was in their Q&A under that title. I really wish I knew what she meant by that. Could someone please list the books / resources that were used with the older guide? Then I could compare with the new. Does anyone have any comment regarding the new vs old?
