  1. We also have a senior going off to college next year, so that will sure be new... 11th Grade: Spanish 3 with Sr. Gamache and La Clase Divertida (her favorite class) Latin 3 (WHA - J. Hensley) OR continue with MP Form Series at home. Either way, I will 'do' Latin with her as I love this subject! GC 5 (WHA - Martin) Precalculus ((WHA - Stublen) Honors Chemistry (WHA - Bailey) Rhetoric 1 (WHA - Baker) Economics in the summer as College Now experience in Cedarville, perhaps Perky Bunch, I am intrigued as to how you can do Precalculus and Calculus in the same year. Isn't one a prerequisite of the other? In the back of my mind, I wonder if I made a mistake in letting my dd 'repeat' geometry as we had used Saxon prior to coming to Wilson Hill and they advised she take their geometry course. It's been okay review for her with lots of new theorems, but very boring in going over similar triangles and the like which she already knew and understood before. My hope is that the comments are cemented now in her head as this area is a passion of hers (why, I have no idea as I could never really 'get' geometry with trying to picture 3-dimensional figures on 2-dimensional paper, but that's another story). Anyway, I hope I have not 'slowed her down' too much in math by taking this route. She had already completed up to Lesson 75 in Saxon Adv. Math when we made the switch to WHA. Brenda
  2. Tremendous excitement at our house once we accessed the schedule. We could then figure out two options for Gamache's Spanish 3 and send off that survey to him much faster than we expected! I love seeing my dd actively involved in planning out which teachers and time-slots she is interested in for next year, as opposed to last year when she wondered what in the world her mother was getting her into with WHA that we had never heard of before!
  3. Actually, I think I am in that boat that you used to be in, RootAnn, waiting to coordinate Spanish 3 with Sr. Gamache until after I see the Wilson Hill schedule. The beauty is that Gamache is already conducting a survey to see which time-slots are preferrable to families, so he also is in the mode to firm up schedules for next year. How long before you will know the local state college schedule, BTW?
  4. Thank you. I will research out the links and closely examine all your great comments! What if you already submitted transcripts to college admissions saying it was an AP class when it is not. What do you do? Call Admissions and correct the transcript?
  5. This is an old thread, but I do not understand some things. If you use the Sonlight AP 'prep' for Psychology, you can only call it Psychology (not AP Psychology) on the high school transcript (unless you somehow get approval from the College Board). Then, if you take the AP Exam in May and score a 4 or a 5, would you or would you not get college credit for Psychology? Why does Sonlight advertise it as an AP class if it is not? Thanks for helping me understand all this as our oldest is a senior this year and I should already have had all my ducks in a row by now!!! Brenda
  6. We give the highest possible marks to the master teacher, Janie Barbosa, at HSLDA Online Academy for AP English Lang. & Comp. My ds will bend over backwards to give her his best work (and believe me, that does not happen often :)). He loves the course and her as a writing coach so much that he actually requested a book on punctuation for Christmas that she recommended!!! Mrs. Barbosa knows how to inspire students to better writing. Her motivational techniques are wonderful and they work! We are beyond thrilled with our choice for AP English Lang. & Comp. this year. Brenda P.S. I can hardly recognize my ds's writing; it has improved so much. Also, he jumped 200 pts. from taking the SAT last year to taking the ACT this past month...and he scored above 93% in English (which I really attribute to this particular class).
  7. My dd has pneumonia (confirmed by x-ray) and I had something right before her that the doctor said might be a mixture of viral and bacterial. I was negative for the flu, but had upwards of 104 fever for the first four days of the first antibiotic I took, and both of us had terrible coughs. It took two full rounds of different antibiotics to get me back and running, and my dd is just spending half the day sleeping along with taking her antibiotic. No fun whatsoever.
  8. My dd raves about the class and enjoys the discussion format. I even started watching the recorded classes as they are so entertaining and informative. I love the passion of the instructor for the subject material. Yes, there is a lot of intense reading, whichever way you choose to go, but I feel the instructors at WHA know how to get the students intrigued to want to read more, and they do a good job in 'setting the scene' and developing the story-line so that everyone is motivated to stay current with the material covered in class. My first exposure to WHA was viewing the Open House they had in late January last year, plus researching archives to watch older information meetings. I found it very valuable and I think you will, too. I will have to leave it to others to describe what it is really like for a young middle schooler to work through the early GC years. Blessings on your decision, Brenda
  9. Just wondering what your goals are...do you like the looks of GC 2 and GC 3, or are you content in waiting until high school to begin? I only know about GC 1&4 because we came in late to the program. My dd loves it as she has Mr. Etter for an instructor and he is truly amazing! Would you do the class self-paced on your own, or in a live setting?
  10. Wow, that is really great news, snowbeltmom! We already have the local public high school that we used last year for an AP exam, so maybe we have a workable solution here! I will confirm in late Feb./March. Thanks a lot, Brenda
  11. Let's say a student decided to switch mid-year to audit status of an AP online class. They would no longer get to put on their transcript that it was an AP class, so does that also mean that they would no longer be allowed to take the AP Exam come May? Brenda
  12. Yep, my ds just received his scores and we are very happy with the results. I was surprised that they came in so fast, actually, but I might add that those who did the writing component will take longer (and we didn't do that part).
  13. Thank you for the well-wishes. It turns out my dd likely has pneumonia as the doctor heard something in her upper left lobe. I take her for a chest x-ray tomorrow. I am so thankful they had a late day appt. available at the doctor's this evening. She is now on the same first antibiotic I took a week ago. Sigh...hope this one works for her.
  14. It's all set...I just heard from the Latin instructor, too, and we are all good for taking until Friday to get these exams done. For folks wondering about Wilson Hill Academy, I am continuing to be blessed in finding this wonderful online 'school' and would highly recommend it to all those who agree with its tenets!
  15. Hmm...my only issue now is that the Latin instructor lives in Australia, so it is just now around sunrise there. Nothing like going down to the wire to wait for the verdict of extension or no extension, especially during this busy season. :confused1: :lurk5:
  16. Well, she did take three midterms during the Wed-Fri time-span last week, so it wasn't like she was just procrastinating on taking her exams. She just had two left and now she is sick. I, myself, am just now finally feeling better after going to the doctor three times in a 10-day span and taking a myriad of meds., including two antibiotics. It was the 2nd antibiotic that finally started helping me get better. I had a 103/104 temp for the first four days of taking the Z-pak, so I knew that one was not going to work well for me, but that's another whole saga. Anyway, my dd's Logic teacher just offered us an extension until Friday and I am waiting back to hear from her Latin teacher, so I appreciate the feedback from you all. Contacting the individual instructors is definitely the way to go!
  17. This is our first year with Wilson Hill Academy. Mid-terms run from 12/13-19 and my dd has been feeling ill since Friday. Saturday I woke her up at 1 p.m.and she vegetated on the couch the rest of the day. Sunday she had a 102 temp and could not stop coughing. Today she is still asleep (minus the 100 temp reading I did on her an hour ago). I just do not know if this is enough of a reason to try and ask for an extension on her Logic and Latin midterms, due tomorrow. Thoughts and/or experiences? She also has a Spanish project (a slide presentation of food she prepared from Dominican Rep. which she needs to finish up), Spanish class for 90 min. tomorrow, and a Spanish exam on Thursday. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Brenda
  18. I would just add that, although both 2nd and 3rd conjugations typically end in -ere, the 2nd conjugation has both a macron over the e, as well as the first principle part ending in -eo instead of just -o (thus moneo, monere for 2nd conj. (with a macron over the middle e) vs. mitto, mittere for 3rd conj. (without a macron). Conjugations are a way to group verbs into verb 'families', just like declensions divide nouns into noun families. Families have similar rules/patterns within themselves; hence, they are not 'random'. If you know a bit of Spanish, you know that they group verbs into -ar verbs, -er verbs, and -ir verbs (as my limited knowledge tells me). So it goes for Latin verb families or 'conjugations'.
  19. I do not Latin Alive at all, either, even though my dd is using it for WHA. I agree...way too much vocabulary with little opportunity to learn via translation exercises or enough workbook pages to really internalize it all. I agree that the layout for Henle leaves something to be desired, but the translation exercises and homework assignments give you PLENTY of practice, and they do not put in any words that you have not already learned. Honestly, if you want to cement the grammar part in your mind, MP's Form Series is the way to go, or you could even just look at the student textbook's 2-page spread of a new grammar concept, and then go back to the Henle to actually do the homework! I think that the LA is useful for learning vocabulary and culture that prepares you well for the National Latin Exam (better than what Henle does). Thus, it depends what your goals are!
  20. I agree with eagleynne about using nos for emphasis, but wanted to give imput about the verb tense, which seems wrong to me... stabamus = we were standing (note the 'ba' tense marker for the imperfect) stabimus = we shall/will stand (note the 'bi' future tense marker...as long as the verb is 1st or 2nd conjugation)
  21. In my head, I am thinking of this as a lifestyle choice rather than a diet program. As such, I am not weighing out every single item or even exactly tracking every item (even though WW tells you to do this), because I know that this would not be a way of life that I would maintain. What I can maintain, though, is an awareness of about how many points I am using up in a day. Additionally, I love the barcode scanner in which you can see how many points your favorite item in the grocery store calculates per portion size. This tool on the App. has been a real eye-opener for me!
  22. It's working for me. I joined in mid-September and have lost 12 lbs. so far (just a steady 1-2 lbs. per week, every week thus far). When I used to 'diet' on my own, own, I could never lose more than a couple of lbs. For the most part, all I did was essentially stop gaining (sad, but true), now that I am not a 'youngster' any more! What I am learning is that saturated fats (such as one angus burger from Sam's...with no cheese on it, even...scores you 13 pts., which is practically half of my day's allotment of 'smart points') are NOT GOOD for you. This is a great system for me as I was told I had to get my cholesterol level down before Christmas or the doctor would put me on statins. Also, I have learned much more about portion control, such as do not eat more than one cup of white rice at a time (closer to 1/2 cup is better, or switch to brown rice, etc.). The other big thing is to go from a 'fixed mindset' to a 'growth mindset' that says you do not have to stay stuck in old patterns of thought and lifestyle. Plus, for me personally, I am no longer trying to lose weight as part of my own performance FOR God, but rather I am humbly relying on Him and praying that I am doing all this in the power of His might. I only mention this as I think so much depends on what is happening in the mind before we see results in the body.
  23. My dd happens to be in both of the WHA classes you are referring to this year. She is older (a sophomore). Have you spoken with Mrs. Jester and asked if your dd would be better served in the non-honors Physics I and/or what to do since she is struggling? She would likely give you great advice. Since Mrs. Smith is teaching all 5 Geometry sections in WHA this year, I do not expect she would have much extra time to focus on your dd. Everything builds on the beginning math foundation that is set; thus, I would be highly inclined to wait and start Geo over rather than to keep on going in the fog, trying to hold my head up above the water! But you must realize that we took the path to highly cement Geo. in my dd's mind as she had already completed Saxon Alg. I and II, plus 1/2 of Adv. Math. Technically, then, she had already achieved her Geometry credit and seemed a 'natural' in the subject. However, upon consultation with the WHA math teacher for Pre-Calc. (Mrs. Stublen), we were advised to have our dd go ahead and take Geo. with the Jurgensen textbook, rather than immediately sprint to Pre-Calc. And I have noticed that there are way more postulates and such in the Jurgensen text than we ever saw in Saxon, so it seems to be working out fine with gleaning new application for 'old' material already covered. WHA teachers seem very open and available, from what I've seen, to personally chat with you on the best plan for your particular dc. Email them and schedule a time to talk by phone, if this works for you.
