100 easy lessons not working with 6yo?
QuirkyKapers replied to jenniferlee's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We did the same thing....dropped EZ lessons and have been doing Explode the Code. My son loves it.... By the way, the homeschool buyers co-op is offering the online version for almost half price (depends on how many people buy it) You can check it out here http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/ My son really enjoys doing things on the computer so this looks great. I am definetly going to try it. -
Your stimulus rebate- save it or spend it?
QuirkyKapers replied to sarahli's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Saving it- We perpetually owe for taxes every year so it wil pay for next years so we don't get in a bind (hopefully...) -
Forgive my ignorant religion question....
QuirkyKapers replied to mo2's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I would be interested in knowing more about what denomination your sister ended up in. We are trying to figure out whether to make a change and women in leadership is a hot issue. Unfortunately, I don't have an issue with it having spoken at church on sunday myself..... So, I definetly am concerned about going somewhere where I would have a scarlet letter on my forehead just because of that issue! You can email me with the response since it is OT. -
2 year olds . . . (sigh)

I was also going to suggest zip up pajamas. With my son, houdouni, I had to put them on backwards so they would stay on:). -
One thing that I have found that helps me is to figure out what absolutely needs to be done (I use Sonlight, CM and some other things that I like:) I decide what absolutely needs to be done. For myself, I want them to do Math and Phonics. I know how much I need to do for the week and I have the pages pulled for the kids to do. If they skip a day they have to make it up the next day. If by the end of the week they haven't done any work, than they need to do it in one day. As for the read alouds, history, science, etc. I write what needs to be done on sticky notes, if it doesn't get done one day, than I move it to the next. Sometimes next means-next week:001_smile: I also will drop things if they did something that might not have been scheduled but qualifies for lets say, reading. It might not be the scheduled reading but if they read than by all means it is reading. Sometimes dad helps in the evenings if it was a particulary hairy week. :D Another thing I try and do is history in one day instead of reading history all week. So any read alouds to do with history are scheduled that day. In fact, friday is my nature & science day. So, anything that pertains to that, we do than. Again, if I skip a day, I move the whole day to another day and combine it with things scheduled, do it in an evening or just do double the next week. I do have a schedule that helps me remeber what I am trying to do! If someone wants to see a copy, I know how to email it as an attachment. I have no idea of how to make it accesible to this board. Don't know if that's helpful....

Have you seen this news story
QuirkyKapers replied to Hannah's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Wow- I hadn't seen it! I just keep being amazed at all the ways that people can hurt others! Just when you thought you had heard it all..... It is so sad. -
What I love about my co-op is it meets in peoples homes on various days. So, I get to pick and chose what to be involved in and it doesn't take all day! My son loved the finger math class he took. The lady who hosted it was very welcoming and since it was in her home the setting was relaxed and more intimate than some others we had tried.:001_smile:

Hey, I found this. What flower are you?
QuirkyKapers replied to ~FireFly~'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
You Are a Daisy "You are just a sweet person. When a friend needs a shoulder to cry on, you are happy to offer yours with a box of tissues as well. Once in awhile, you wish you could be a little more dramatic but then sensibility sets back in and you know that you are perfect the way you are." -
To co-op or not to co-op that is the question...
QuirkyKapers replied to Jennefer@SSA's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I was concerned that being in a co-op would be too big of a committment since it would be all day. However, I did some researching where I live and found several that have worked really well for us! One of the co-ops meets once a month at a library. The lady who put it together actually does all the work, she plans the events and brings all the materials needed, all you do is show up and stay with your child to help them with whatever had been planned. I offered to help, but she really enjoys putting everything together. In fact, people offered to help pay for some of the materials and she refused! The other co-op I am in meets in peoples homes. My son was involved with in a Geography Club that met every 1st and 3rd wednesday from 1:30-3:30. Basically, one mom would stay and help out. The second meeting all moms would prepare a food that went with whatever country was being studied. Everyone else was free to do whatever. My son also did finger math on Mondays for 1 hour (I stayed for that). What I loved was I could pick and choose what to do and it didn't take up my entire day! I would suggest to search and see what all the options are where you live. I was actually surprised to find co-ops that didn't fit with what I thought in my head they would be. :001_smile: -

Is there anyone out there who spends less ??
QuirkyKapers replied to TracyR's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I spent around $500 this year, including supplies, but not including extra classes that my kids do. Last year, I spent more. However, it was my first year and I wasn't sure what would work until I tried it out! The great thing is I have bought some curriculum that I can reuse again when they are older (WP) so that helps too:001_smile: I could spend less if I would use the library system. However, it is easier just to have everything on hand so I don't have to be so organized! -
Introductions Please!! Newbies and Regulars!
QuirkyKapers replied to Peek a Boo's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Hi- My name is Rebecca. This is my first year of homeschooling. I have two kids ds 7 and dd 5. I am eclectic in my approach but am using Sonlight for my base, just added in WP. Basically, I like to switch things up so I don't get bored! I definetly am open to letting the kids take off and learn what they want if it captures their interest. I love CM and friday's are officially our science and nature day! I have been married for 17 years. I love to learn and try new things. I also a habit of over researching everything to the point of ad nauseum:001_smile: Oh- I love the sale and swap board and have been an avid purchaser for the last few years! I have loved reading everyones intro's which as taken me over an hour to catch up with:001_smile: It is so interesting to find out more about others, how they homeschool and all the various interests. -
What kind of bite is this?
QuirkyKapers replied to Ohio12's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I would definetly keep on eye on it. Not to scare you, but I was hearing that staff infections can start off looking like a bite. I would keep applying triple antibotic stuff and if it doesn't clear up within a few days, take her into the doctor to get it checked out. -
Not homeschooling for religious reasons. My son and daughter are very inquisitive and active! I didn't think a traditional classroom would keep them interested in learning. Montessori was too expensive. So I thought I would give homeschooling a whirl:001_smile: I like that I can get everything done in less time and than he can be outdoors using their extra energy.
