  1. I don't get to many of these, but 100% of the ones I do get are either stay-at-home moms or have a very part-time job. I'm assuming this is so due to those groups looking to supplement income.
  2. I have just spent some time updating my SO's resume and all the articles I read said not to go back more than 10 years. Since he has been with the same company 14 years, that is the only one we listed. It still takes almost a full page to describe his achievements at that job though, so the resume is still 1 1/2 pages. He is in tech so anything tech related that far back is not relevant anyway.
  3. I think you should leave early and take the side roads if that is what will prevent you from having a panic attack. That being said though, if I were having the kind of anxiety you describe over something that is a routine part of life (for me anyway), I would consider how to fix the problem, whether it be medication, therapy, or something else.
  4. Wow, I had no idea this was possible. I live in Travis county and going to look into how to do this myself. Thanks for sharing.
  5. I think for myself anyway, that BMI is crap. According to the BMI charts, I am overweight. According to body fat percentage charts, I am in the low end of ideal and almost into the lean category. I recently uploaded the attached pic to facebook to show a new swim suit that I love. While I have body image issues like most everybody else, I do not think I look "overweight" in the pic.
  6. I will NOT be participating in this, but thought some of you would get a kick out of it. There will be a naked bike ride around central Austin tomorrow evening. https://www.facebook.com/events/634303143273526/ On a related note, SO and I were hiking along Barton Springs in the greenbelt yesterday after work, stopped to admire a small waterfall, and he said something about, "typical Austin," as we walked away. I asked what he meant and he said he was referring to the topless women sunbathing. I had not even noticed...
  7. Our city (Austin) also has a plastic bag ban so yes, I use reusable all the time. I just buy the cheap kind you get at the grocery store however, as they have several cute designs and are cheap enough that I don't fret about losing one.
  8. I always tip at least $5, no matter how small the order. My son delivers pizzas.
  9. Oh, she is definitely an exhibitionist too.
  10. For the record, I have no dog in this fight. I don't want to show my saggy boobs while window shopping or anything, not to mention the sweat that would accumulate underneath if I was not wearing a bra (due to the aforementioned sagginess). I was just curious due to the recent threads on modesty how it would be handled. I'm sure there are at least a few conservative Christians in Austin.
  11. Right back at you! *Waving* I am still in grad school in Waco, but commute three days a week. I LOVE Austin! If you ever got on facebook, look me up.
  12. I live in Austin, Texas were it is perfectly legal for anyone, male or female to be topless in public. It is common to find a topless woman or two at any of the public swimming pools. You only have to have your anus and genitalia covered up (except for Hippie Hollow where you can be totally nude). Anyway, I have one friend who is very much an activist in this area and she proudly marches downtown topless often. I have seen people sunbathing topless and even biking topless, usually more downtown and south Austin, but it is not super uncommon. I asked my activist friend if the topless law truly meant "anywhere" in public. She assured me it did and said she could ride her bike through a school zone topless and be completely legal. The only caveat is if someone is intentionally trying to create a disturbance. The example she gave was standing beside a major highway jumping up and down topless, waving a flag and basically causing such a distraction that a traffic accident could happen. I am fine with all this by the way, though I am more of a string bikini person in public and keep my no-tan lines sunbathing for my own pool. I say all this to ask, how do parents who are trying to encourage modesty in their children or who raise their children not to see someone of the opposite sex undressed handle this type situation?
  13. I know that my department would most likely start requiring a boiler plate type statement for all classes and might even add one to the departmental website. They could put it right next to the statement on evolution. "All Biology classes may include graphic or disturbing material." One of the labs I teach involves a necropsy on a seal. I did warn the students in advance that a necropsy was different from a dissection in that the animal had not been prepared for dissection by removal of bodily fluids or had preservative added. I let them know that the seal would be extremely bloody, would smell, and that the lab would look like a Dexter kill room to make clean up easier. I did not do it as trigger warning though, just as a courtesy so they would be prepared and not wear good clothing. This is an upper level bio course and frankly, they are not given the option to opt out for another assignment. They could skip it, but it would reflect in their grade.
  14. In a professional work setting as in being called honey by a colleague, yes, I would be offended. In every day life though, it is fairly common for my neck of the woods (central Texas), especially in smaller towns, and I am not bothered at all.
  15. I see an allergist regularly and she has me on the following daily combo. In the morning - Allegra (the 180mg dose), Flonase, Astepro, a 12 hour Sudafed, and Elestat eye drops. At bedtime - Claritin, Flonase, and Astepro This keeps me pretty much in control and not too drowsy.
  16. I have 1 which I got at age 36 or 37 I think. It is a sea turtle on my upper right side of my back so is only partially visible in a tank top and completely visible in spaghetti straps. It has meaning and was not a whim.
  17. Just wanted to third the suggestion of stopping in West for kolaches! I will keep my fingers crossed that your son gets more money to attend Baylor. I teach until 5:30 on Thursdays so will most likely already be heading home when you come down. Depending on which weekend you are coming however, I may be there on Friday as I have to teach my adviser's lecture class several times in Feb and March when he is out of town. PM if you want to try to meet up.
  18. I second the vote to fly into Austin and drive to Waco. I live in Austin and commute to Baylor three days a week. You can take Hwy130 up from the airport to join in IH35 and miss any rush hour traffic. There is some construction about halfway that is a pain, because you have to slow down from 70mph to 60mph. As long as you are not trying to get out of Dallas during rush hour, that drive is also fine, but also has a bit of construction. I'm not sure any major highway in Texas is NOT currently under construction. Either drive will take about 2 hours. On a related note, is this a child interviewing to attend Baylor or someone interviewing for a job at Baylor?
  19. I get a full physical, pap smear, and mammogram every year. I had some precancerous cells found and removed from my cervix last year and had to go every 6 months for two clean paps, and am now back to every year.
  20. Mine was last year. They gave me numbing shots into the cervix that pinched a bit, but I felt no pain after that. The recovery was definitely more than I anticipated, but not bad.
  21. Spoken from experience, when they say not to lift heavy things, don't try to do a massive yard clean up that requires much sweeping of leaves and lots of bending and squatting unless you want to start bleeding.
  22. I googled and went with one in my area who was bonded and had good yelp reviews. She is pricey, but worth every penny.
  23. I would only call immediate family. Everyone else would get a mass text or email. In my family, it has always been by phone tree, so to speak. My grandmother died in February and all the grandkids were extremely close to her. The nursing home staff called the daughter whose phone number was listed first as point of contact. That daughter called her two siblings who in turn called their children (grandkids). The first daughter also called my grandmother's sister who took care of the rest of the extended family. I have gotten texts or facebook messages about uncles and cousins who have passed on. It really just depends on how close I was to the relative who passed. I would not expect a personal phone call about the uncle who I only saw and spoke to twice a year. My grandmother, however, I talked to for at least an hour twice a week.
