  1. So when I moved here my description of the triangle area was one sprawling suburb in the middle of the most uninteresting part of the state. It may have been Oviedo or Coral Springs picked up and placed here. So don't get too idealistic about the area yet! The change of seasons can make up for some of it. Also there is tons of new construction everywhere. The place is growing, and I fear the congestion in 10 - 15 years won't be any different than Central Florida or S Florida. That said, we have grown to like it here a lot! And I do prefer it over Central Florida any day!!!!! (I would still prefer to spend my summer in S FL though!) My husbands 3 sisters all live in central Florida. We have been here 6 years and only just this past summer did one of them come to visit us. The grand parents make it here once maybe twice a year. But truthfully - it's us taking the drive to Florida mostly to see anyone. If your family is brave enough to fly Allegiant their is a route from Sanford to RDU so that is convenient and inexpensive.
  2. It's pretty much the same as Central Florida. I spent the first few summers here comparing the summer weather to Orlando (DHs home town) and Fort Lauderdale (my home town). S Fl was consistently 10 degrees less hot in the summer months than here. Fall temps are lovely. Spring would be except that you have to deal with the awful pollen.
  3. Definitely not southern here. You would have to drive an hour or two out of the triangle to find "southern." Too many northerners and internationals. I am from SFL, husband is from Orlando. You don't have to worry about it being "southern."
  4. We are planning a vacation for next May using airline miles and just booked our flights. It was recommended from the reservationist that we do so when they become available. When we thought we would try this past May with just a couple months notice it was difficult to find flights with points. We did use new card promotions to build up points. Also, the amount of points may change, this past May overseas flights were 20,000 points, for the upcoming year they are 30,000. (We had to buy points - bummer). DH had most of the points saved up from business travel. If you book your flight when reservations open - wait a day or two. For both our outgoing flight and returning flight, the lower point flights didn't show up on the first day reservations opened. I believe my husband waited two days for the 30,000 point flights.
  5. We just browsed every aisle! I looked for hardback fiction/classics, non-fiction books. They usually have inspirational story books. And non-fiction for adults. Those were fun years, going to the book fair! The kids looked for items that would interest them.
  6. Both times we moved (different states) we contacted a local realtor (we got recommendations for them from local people). Both times we were shown several homes for rent and dealt with very professionally. So don't overlook the realtor angle. In one market, rentals were tight and we had to compete! The realtor was able to advocate for us with the owner, and that is probably one reason we got the home that we did.
  7. They should have all their school-aged children living at home enrolled in CC and be committed to homeschooling through high school. I'm sure the SM considers other qualifications and experience when contracting new directors, but there is no rule that you can not direct a level higher than your own students. Essentials and Foundations tutors do need to have a student enrolled in the program they are tutoring.
  8. At his age I would go for Saxon 3 and take it easy and slow if you need to. (3 kids that have all used Saxon)
  9. Florida, avoid the theme parks and college spring break hot spots, go to natural areas instead.
  10. My crowd thinks there are more thrills at Blizzard Beach and so Typhoon Lagoon might be better for families with younger children. But both are great!
  11. Were all the materials you bought based on the 3rd edition? Two years ago anything bought new would have been based on the 4th edition. If you bought used 3rd edition materials, then you would need to replace or update anything that you would want to use (songs, flashcards). But all you really need is the guide and a tin whistle. And you can cut and paste the guide so that it reflects the 4th edition changes.
  12. They don't have carte blanche tax exempt status. Any unrelated business income is subject to taxation. Just like the example earlier of the church that owns rental property. I would also think that church's running cafeterias and coffee houses also owe tax on that income, unless they have some fool-proof rationalization as to how that service further's the mission of the church.
  13. That's correct. Text only for Algebra 1/2 and up. No fact sheets. But there is a test booklet.
  14. Besides federal and state taxes (if applicable) he will also have to pay the full amount of social security taxes (approx 15%). But like others have said, I would be wary of this arrangement. Just because he will only be responsible for your daughter, there is still risk involved with the other children, and he would need liability insurance in case anything went terribly wrong. Unless there is a precedent for aids to get paid in this matter, I'd prefer going through the hiring redtape. Everyone is better protected that way. Besides - your daughter is in that environment. Wouldn't you want all the workers that have access to her to have gone through all the hoops to get hired, including background checks and first aid/CPR training? As far as claiming him as a dependent, if he is still a student at the end of the year, living at home, and you have provided for more than half his support than you can still claim him as a dependent. But he will not be able to claim an exemption for himself on his return.
  15. For discount on park tickets you can plan to go when they have the general homeschool day. Usually in October and February. The ticket prices are fantastic; you just have to attend the general homeschool program on the designated day. It is included with your ticket package and it is for all ages. You can opt to take additional classes for an additional charge. I don't think that you can take advantage with free dining with this offer though. There are specially certified Disney travel agents that can help you at no cost to you. I have stayed both onsite and offsite. And while I used to say that I would always want to stay on site, the convenience and savings of renting an off-site condo/timeshare can't be beat. You and your husband could plan a trip just for the two of you where you can stay on site.
  16. Yes, to testing through 76. We are doing that currently and my son has tested out of the whole book! We've always used Saxon with 3 kids, doing math year-round, so testing through the review at the beginning of each text was normal practice for us. However, this is the first time that I had a child test through the whole book. As a result we may just start 87 the traditional way with lesson 1!
  17. At least I think it was a picture book. Sometime in the late 90s early 2000s at a women's conference, the speaker read a picture book about a girl that married a farmer, but through the years wondered what would have happened if she had gone to the ball and met the prince. I also remember finding and reading it at one of our MOPS meetings. But I have forgotten the title. The book goes through all the ups and downs of marriage and parenting and in the end of course realizes that the love they share and the life they lived would never compare to a royal romance. Does that sound familiar to anyone? I would love to have that book in my library. Thanks in advance!
  18. Check the locations online - It takes me maybe 20 minutes to get to the Costco that is closest to us. I'm pretty sure we are in the same city after having met you at our WTM get together a few years ago. When I first moved here, I thought it was mean joke when I found the Ikea ad in the mail with the local sale/coupon flyers only to discover it was 3 hours away! As far as towels - I have the bulk white towels and wash cloths from Costco - love them too.
  19. Definitely talk to the education specialists at Disneyland to see if they have the same program as Disney World. Disney World has a week in the winter and a week in the fall for a group homeschool special. You have to attend the homeschool class scheduled for one morning and is applicable for all ages. It is included in your ticket package. The ticket package is for dates several days before and after the homeschool class date. You can also register for other educational classes for an additional cost. The prices are really, really good!
  20. I have had two in challenge for the past 3 years. They are two years apart in age, and one year difference for Challenge. There are so many times that I think it would be so convenient if they were in the same level! If I were in your shoes, I would start them both with A and keep my options open for the oldest (whether it would be best for various reasons to skip B and go into 1). Do you have a B class for the oldest to go in this year anyway? If you keep them together, your oldest can still graduate after Challenge III. My oldest started Ch A at age 13 and I thought he would graduate after Ch III, but for now it looks like he will do CH IV as his "super" senior year.
  21. It depends if the context of the sentence is the present, past, or future tense. Today I have begun to clean. Yesterday I had begun to clean, Tomorrow I shall have begun to clean. Today He has begun to clean. Yesterday he had begun to clean. Tomorrow he will have begun to clean. It could be that you can have more than one right answer if all you need is a form of to have and the past participle.
  22. Here is the answer from the Saxon publisher (the last couple of sentences addresses taking the tests). I have followed this advice with all my children. The approach your wife wishes to take is in line with the publishers recommendations. Can a student begin a Saxon math book after completing only part of a previous book? Yes, if a student has completed all but the last five to ten lessons, it may be possible for him or her to move on to the next book successfully. If the student did not complete a large portion of the previous book, it would be far better to complete that book before advancing to the next level. Starting in the middle of a Saxon book will force the student to begin with a problem set using concepts that may not have been practiced for some time. If the student needs extra time to review, the early problem sets may take more than a day to complete. If your student is to begin a new book soon after completing the previous one, we recommend using the placement tests to assess his or her preparedness for the next level. Rather than completing one lesson per day, complete one test each day and begin taking lessons at the point where the student's mastery drops below 80%. This way, you can bypass the material that is meant as a review of the previous level. - See more at: http://www.hmhco.com/shop/education-curriculum/math/homeschool/saxon-math-homeschool/resources/faq#previous
