  1. . Lori D., this is fantastic. Thank you so much! My goal for his entire senior year is to make the learning as enjoyable as possible while still maintaining high standards. Otherwise, I am going to lose my mind because he hates school, I am worn out, and I have another one starting high school. We are considering sending him to school because of this.
  2. I asked my son what type of literature he would like to focus on for his senior year and he said mysteries. So what would the literature lovers recommend as the best books in this genre?
  3. For classical education, I assume? Do you want Christian or secular? https://www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/ninth/ https://cathyduffyreviews.com https://classicalacademicpress.com/collections/dialectic-rhetoric
  4. Yes! As long as they stay far away from the pharmacy.
  5. Sounds familiar. Mine is working at the national homeschooled child employer, Chik Fil A, and hates it, yet still says he doesn't want to go to college. He just wants to be in a band. 😩
  6. This is what we do and it works great. I will also have a 9th grader next year and he will be reading British medieval and renaissance literature, which is what I'll call it on the transcript. I use a lot of Memoria Press lit guides and they have Beowulf, Sir Gawain, Canterbury Tales, Henry V, and Poetry Prose, and Drama, and selections from a history book scheduled for their online academy and it equals one credit. And I agree with whoever suggested waiting to do A Tale of Two Cities. My junior is studying it right now after learning about the French Revolution. It's a tough one I would wait on.
  7. I'm no so sure for my son. He might get totally overwhelmed with all DE. At least he is open to the idea for some classes. I would like him to take some CLEP tests.
  8. It makes me sad, too. I am more irritated at the moment, though because I have tried to pick the best things that will work for him and he doesn't appreciate it. He doesn't hate every single thing, but my goodness it has been a constant battle.
  9. I know. I haven't called the school yet to find out. It will be a huge headache because he has covered much of the literature they are doing next year and he hasn't done high school biology, which they do freshman year. He doesn't want to go to school, but fights me over everything.
  10. If my school-hating child will cooperate, the tentative plan is: Notgrass Government and Economics Guest Hollow Biology or Anatomy and Physiology? (He hates science.) Personal Finance MP and Roman Roads for literature Dual enrollment for composition? Rhetoric Alive Senior Thesis? Music Theory and Songwriting Otherwise, we are considering sending him to a private school for his last year, which doesn't fit with my plans, but I can only fight for so long.
  11. I'm in a similar boat with my 8th grader and I just switched him from Math U See to CTC math. The lessons are short and not overwhelming. You can customize the program to your student and give them more or less practice as needed. They also give you access to all the grade levels. It might be worth looking into. https://www.ctcmath.com/.
  12. UPDATE: Experience Chemistry is not only hated, but it is a MISS. We have changed course mid way through the year. My 11th grader says he dislikes everything, so it's between hate and tolerable like cintinative's children. I wouldn't say we have any misses this year. Hated courses: MUS Algebra 2 Experience Chemistry Speech at co-op Tolerable: Dave Raymond's Modernity Memoria Press literature selections (Oedipus the King, Macbeth, poetry, Tale of Two Cities so far) Writing and Rhetoric Thesis 2 The Most Important Thing You'll Ever Study
  13. I have the high school guides, but haven't used them with my son because of what Lori said. I also think they are for the self-directed learner, which my kid is not, and there aren't specific writing directions or directions for what to do each day. However, I like them as a resource because links are provided for the authors, art, and music from the times the books were written in if you want extra information.
  14. I'm the OP and we dropped Shormann after a year and a half. Algebra 1 went pretty well and my son got a low B, but Algebra 2 was a train wreck and I should have quit much sooner. We switched to Math U See and he has done very well with it. Shormann might be better suited to a motivated math student who doesn't mind tons of concepts being thrown at them. It is not for one who doesn't enjoy math, and as another poster pointed out, it will make them hate it even more.
  15. Yes, we did use Canon Press's Logic by Nance last year and it was a success for my son. He enjoyed the video lessons with Brian Kohl, who is an enthusiastic teacher and explains everything very well. It's an introduction to formal logic, but the fallacies are covered at the end. This is one of the few courses that wasn't a drag for my kid, and I plan to use it again with my second child.
  16. You might want to look at Guest Hollow. They have lots of movie suggestions, too. https://guesthollow.com/store/high-school-american-history-year-1/ Movies and book lists by year: https://guesthollow.com/the-history-shelf/
  17. You might want to look at Breaking the Barrier. It moves quickly, but you can slow it down. Book 1 is actually enough for two years of French. https://tobreak.com/pages/french
  18. I just discovered Byline. My son will be a junior and this course looks quite interesting. Do you think it does a good job teaching writing? We need something to fine tune essays.
  19. You might want to look into Journey Homeschool Academy science courses. My son took their astronomy course this year and next year will be taking their chemistry course and his brother will take earth science. It has been a life saver for us because I don't have to do anything except remind him to do it. https://journeyhomeschoolacademy.com/getting-started/
  20. My son is currently doing Canon Press (Nance's) Introductory Logic with the dvds from Compass Classroom. The teacher is Brian Kohl, who my son is enjoying. This curriculum has been a good choice for my picky kid, so I would definitely recommend it to others.
  21. I third First Form Latin. It's well paced, logical, and gives ample practice.
  22. I asked your biology question last year. Below is the thread. I let my son choose to do Classical Astronomy instead and it's been a good year of science. I am going to make him take bio his senior year, though. He will have had a thorough cooling off period from his hatred of the subject when he had it in 8th grade. We will be using Experience Biology when the time comes. https://journeyhomeschoolacademy.com/
  23. When and in which lecture did he say "innocent plantation farmers?" I don't recall ever hearing this. And as for Dave Raymond leaning left as another poster mentioned, I assumed the opposite. Interesting that we all have a such different takes and perspectives. This course has worked well for my son, who dislikes just about everything involving school.
