  1. I like alpacas. They're just adorable and funny animals. We have a farm near us where you can go into the fields and feed and pet the alpacas and I loved going there. Anyway, this year for Christmas dh went there to buy my presents. I like practical presents and tell him things I want, but those aren't the things he buys because he wants to surprise me. He bought me a huge stuffed alpaca, which is funny, but I'm still trying to get rid of the mountains of stuffed animals my children have left behind so it's more than a little silly. I'll keep it and find some place for it anyway. He also bought me a beautiful alpaca wool sweater. It was too tight and, while I liked it, it would not have been comfortable to wear. I'm overweight and wear plus sizes. I'm not happy about it since I used to be very thin and I hate how I look and feel now. I have not been successful at losing weight and DH is my worst enabler, constantly bringing home my favorite treats. DH keeps trying to buy me XL shirts (which are a size or two too small) and I recently found another alpaca wool sweater he bought in my closet with the tags still on it because it's also too tight for me. I asked DH to return the sweater. We're on a tight budget and it was very expensive and I can't justify sticking it into the closet hoping I'll lose weight and be able to wear it someday. He kept asking if he should see if they had a bigger one, but I don't think they sell plus sizes there and the sweater requires all kinds of special care (hand wash and dry, roll to dry) that I just don't care to do. He went off to return it, but he seemed really sad. I feel like a jerk.
  2. We don't often use ribbons or bows and I already have enough of both to last for years. We save gift bags, but used wrapping paper gets put in the recycing bin. We never worry about ripping the paper or keeping it nice. I have a plastic bin full of wrapping paper and haven't had to buy any for years.
  3. Hopefully he won't get too bad. My 83 year old dad got Covid last week and we were making end of life decisions. He has dementia and is in a facility. He only had a sore throat, but they put him on oxygen, he slept a lot for a few days, and now he's doing better. He did not have a booster this year, but this version of Covid seems to be mild.
  4. Miss: DH got me a beautiful sweater that's at least a size too small just like he does every single year. You think he'd stop buying me shirts since this is at least the 5th time he's bought me one that's too small. Hit: DD got a bag for dance comps that she was very excited about.
  5. It's -5 degrees here today with a wind chill of -24, heavy winds, and several inches of snow. I don't have anywhere to go today and I'm happy about that. People have been reporting power outages all over our area, up to 35,000 places without power, but ours has not gone out today.
  6. We have an antenna and nothing else. My husband doesn't watch TV. My teen and young adult get their entertainment from their computer or smart phone. I sometimes watch TV for an hour or two a week, but otherwise the TV is off and it doesn't make sense to pay for cable or streaming services.
  7. I completely sympathize with you because I'm in the same situation. We have an 18 year old long haired cat that we've had since she was a few weeks old. She's a matted mess! She will let me clip her nails and I'm more diligent about it now because she had an ingrown claw (grown into her foot pad) a few months ago and we had to have the vet get it out. She has always hated to be brushed and has that long, silky fur that tangles so easily. Our vet has a groomer, but they only do dogs and the vet didn't seem at all worried about how matted she is. The best I can do is cut out big loose mats with someone holding her and get a few swipes with a grooming tool until she tries to take off my hand.
  8. My kids definitely did not want to do dissections. I wanted them to do biology as a lab science, so we did both virtual and paper dissections and then did many other biology related experiments. I don't think I'll have to worry about med school either!
  9. I'm pretty sure I know what community you are talking about and you live *very* close to one of my adult children. It also reminded me that dd wants some maple candy in her stocking.
  10. Yes, yes we do!🤣 Life (and cookies) should be enjoyed (at least at home).
  11. Sorry to go off topic, but can I hear more about your experience with this? I had chickenpox as an adult. It was bad. Very, very bad. I probably should have been hospitalized, but I was too sick to even think about going to the hospital. I want to get the shingles shot and I keep talking myself out of getting it or finding reasons to put it off because I'm afraid of a bad reaction.
  12. I have not have the latest booster and probably won't get it. Our entire (vaxxed) family did have Omicron last Christmas. My 80 year old mom is extremely healthy (no meds or medical issues), but she decided to get it because of her age. She had a sore arm and fatigue after her first few Covid shots, but the recent booster made her so sick she couldn't get out of bed for two days. I'm not sure what's up with her reaction this time, but she says she won't get any more boosters after that experience.
  13. I really dislike Santa Baby! I like the hippo song and drive my kids crazy every year singing it. We then get into a conversation/argument every year about why I can't have a hippo for Christmas because a hippo will kill me.
  14. Sorry you ended up in the ER. I wonder if RSV is what dh is fighting. He's had a cold for over a week now. The first few days he was so tired and now he still feels crummy and just can't shake the chest congestion and coughing plus he has ENT pain.
  15. Posts like this always make me think of the Michael Buble music video "Forever Now" which makes me cry every time I see it. It feels like those years went as fast as the video.
  16. We've always had our holiday meals around 1 pm. I prefer to eat a big meal in the middle of the day and then relax the rest of the day. If anyone is hungry later, they just go and help themselves to whatever leftovers they want. My mom lives over an hour drive away and she goes to bed early so she would never come if we waited until evening to eat.
  17. Some of these may be more than a dollar, but are useful: Fun socks, Pez dispenser/Pez, gum, Chapstick, razor blades, hair ties, pens, game book like Sudoku or word find, card game, small art supplies, homemade coupons for things like a day off from chores, collector cards (baseball, Pokeman, Magic), golf tees, nail polish, makeup/makeup remover, small puzzles, notepad, HotHands, batteries, crayons, nail clippers.
  18. My friend is from Watertown. She loves snow!
  19. We only have about an inch, but the snow is still coming down. The local news stations are reporting that ALL the bridges are a sheet of ice and every single highway in the area (already part of a huge construction project) has at least one accident in each direction. I hate being cold. I absolutely hate driving in snowy conditions. Why do I still live here?
  20. My son works with many people from Poland. They've been worried about Russian aggression since the start of the war with Ukraine. Several are applying for US jobs in the company and trying to get visas. It may have been an accident, but it's not good.
  21. This is not true at all anymore. ROTC and even the US Military Academy didn't have any issue accepting our homeschool diploma.
  22. We finally got rid of our landline because those scam calls were the only calls we ever got on that phone. I was sick of paying each month to get scam calls.
  23. It depends on the 2 year old! My dd was a test subject for psychology grad students and they were shocked when she took one look at a 10 piece puzzle and then completed it in a couple of seconds. For some reason she was really good at puzzles! The friend who was in charge of the grad students wanted DD because she knew dd would give the students and interesting test subject.😂😂 My 2 year old granddaughter can do the kind of puzzles where each shape fits into one space.
  24. This makes me so sad. First of all the loss of life is just terrible. Second, we are big WW2 history buffs and are so sad about the loss of another B-17. My FIL ran radar for the B-17's of the Mighty Eighth and my son's Eagle project was for a military air museum. We saw the Collings Foundation's B-17, the 909, a couple of years before it crashed and now with the loss of Texas Raiders there may only be eight(?) airworthy B17 planes left. I wonder what happened because we can't figure out how the pilot of the P63 didn't see the B17. B17's are huge, lumbering aircraft and can't be easily moved out of the way. How tragic if it's true that the ATC sent the P63 into a position where the bigger plane was in the pilot's blindspot.
  25. You are my people! I love summer. I hate being cold. I live in a very cloudy area and need more sunlight. I struggle with SAD in the dark days of winter. There are things I can enjoy about the other seasons (we've had an amazingly beautiful fall, first snows can be magical, spring is nice), but summer is my favorite.
