  1. Well, I can rephrase to be more precise ..... until the kiddo is a strong reader, isn’t it going to be teacher intensive no matter what curriculum you choose?
  2. My copy of the Learnables was a physical book and CD set. But no words, only pictures, in the book.
  3. Does it have to be an app? Your requirements made me think of the Learnables program .... at least for the vocabulary section in level 1, there's no reading of words. We didn't make it far enough to make it to the grammar section, so I can't help you there.
  4. Lori D., I always appreciate your thoughtful posts; thanks for responding to my question. I quoted your last sentiment because it made me chuckle ..... I've been at this long enough to know my own priorities and preferred styles and curriculum. I asked the question to try to understand other homeschoolers ... to try to be more gracious and understanding. I need all the help I can get to be more gracious and step out of my echo chamber. ? I *do* like how you explicitly said that the "spine" of the curriculum is dependent on me, the teacher. And then the independent activities can be added as supporting material. (That's how I operate.). But when people are looking for less teacher intensive curriculum, they are talking about reducing the direct instructional time that they have to do, right?!?
  5. Fair enough! I'm probably operating under the assumption of teacher-directed studies ... but I didn't state my assumptions up front! ?
  6. Right - so by that definition, isn't Kindergarten and 1st grade teacher intensive, no matter what curriculum you choose?
  7. I always read posts searching for curriculum that is less teacher intensive for subject XYZ. But now I’m curious as to how people define “teacher intensive.” Do you mean lots of prep time? Do you mean time spent in direct instruction? How much direct instructional time is too much? When people are looking for less intense curriculum, are they looking for a book written to the student that the kid can just go off and do it by themselves 100% of the time? i understand that at some point the child needs to be independent in his studies, by if we are talking about 5th grade and lower, what is your definition or opinion on the term “teacher intensive”?
  8. Yeah - some drone footage these days is just amazing!
  9. I just supplement the book by trying to find a documentary/video on the location for us to watch later in the week.
  10. I had the same questions as you do. But just the other day, I noticed that you can go to the For Sale "Board" and still see expired listings. There seems to be no consequence to an ad expiring?!?
  11. Thanks, @Jackie. Can you share your google ninja secret? the search terms I tried were accurate, but neither the site nor google found it. How'd you find it?
  12. Help, please. I can't find that one Killgallon thread where someone (@Monica_in_Switzerland perhaps?) emailed Don Killgallon, he responded with a compliment of her writing, and he suggested an order for use of his books. I thought I had participated in the thread, too, but neither the site nor Google is finding it for me. Does anyone remember this thread? If so, do you have a link to it easily available? Thanks in advance
  13. @OtherJohn Are we allowed to search from here yet? The big red header bar is enough to stop me from using the site's search function. ?
  14. Haven't you used Rightstart Math? They have the songs for Days of the Week and Months of the Year that could be stuck in the deep recesses of your mind. I've found, by accident, that a Shutterfly calendar with family pictures and events draws them in. But like others, I'd tackle it formally when they are older and just throw in the "terminology" as you go about your daily business for now.
  15. Yes!!! that link worked to direct me to a free pdf to jpg converter. Many, many thanks for spending the time to search for me; it was just the help I needed!
  16. I'd like to use Shutterfly to create a reusable shopping bag with my DC's name. Ideally, I'd like the name to be like a logo rather than just a caption text. I created something in Canva.com, but when I export the design as a .jpg, then shutterfly tells me that the resolution is too low for printing. Any advice/tips? Thanks.
  17. Not unreasonable - but maybe childcare is the issue rather than a general attitude of unwillingness. Do they have to meet the volunteer requirement in 1 hr increments? It might be easier for those mommas to find a babysitter for a half day every quarter rather than 1 hr/month. We don't have family nearby to watch kids for such a short time frame, nor would I feel comfortable imposing on other HS mommas/families on such a regular basis. And if I asked DH to readjust his work schedule, it'd be pretty disruptive to his schedule to watch the kids from say 10:30-11:30 or 2-3. Also - Do the time slots interfere with stereotypical nap times? Could you offer a nursery (either by increasing the volunteer requirement or overhead cost)?
  18. They were "working" a few weeks ago, but ads last only 3-5 days before they expire. And I didn't see a button to "renew" them; it looked like I had to create a new ad. I'm hoping that this isn't the final version of the Classifieds....
  19. I forgot that I’m teaching F now and could look ahead. Duh. F: lesson 145
  20. I don't think I can answer your question because I really can't remember where the levels start/stop in their flow of information. Multiple editions, multiple levels, multiple kids and lack of sleep combine to make me no use to you. ? I don't know that you need to worry about a respected program with a long track record having holes in their elementary curriculum. Their goal is to get the children to a certain, pretty well-defined point in their mathematical education .... that is ready to enter a pre-algebra program. If a program had any glaring holes, say never covered decimals, then they wouldn't survive the test of time. Now they might have weaknesses, but not holes. Weaknesses ....actually that reminds me that one of the big criticisms of 1st edition was that it was weak on fractions. Hence they came out with a Fractions kit. And I think that material got rolled into the 2nd edition and level F. SO if you go with RS1 all though elementary, you might add 2nd edition level F (or the Fractions book or a devoted time frame to work through the fraction section of the games book) to your sequence before starting G and/or pre-Algebra.
  21. 1st edition - used it for the first time in E, I believe 2nd edition - haven't used it yet from A-beginning D. And I don't see it mentioned when I quickly scanned through the remainder of D.
  22. I'd agree with having scheduled review games in the 2nd edition. When juggling multiple kids, it's easier to ignore what's written than to remember to add it in. ? I think both RS1 and RS2 use visual arrays to teach multiplication; but RS2 emphasizes it more than RS1. I don't know that the end result is any different between the editions. They are taking the current G (which is supposed to take 2 years when you add a pre-algebra text to it) and splitting it into 2 separate books (G and H). My impression from their facebook page is that a student finishing G1e will be in the same place as a student finishing H2e. And, @countrymum if your goal is mathematical thinking for life - I think either edition will help you meet the goal. I don't think RS would sacrifice that for an edition change! (Insert winking emoji here.). Oh - and you asked if the review (that's added in 2e) is necessary ..... I think that the answer is dependent upon your child and your teaching style. Does your student need a lot of review? Do you teach to mastery of a lesson or are you more apt to push on and count on hitting it again? But again, like the games, it's easier to ignore what's written than find the resources. (... Especially if you are going to use it for multiple kids where one may utilize the review lessons and another may not need it.)
  23. Oh. I stand corrected then. I must have just decided to not deal with it for subsequent kiddos. Too much pain the first time ....... ?
