  1. This is good to hear about Mrs. Coll as Mrs. Salmon, my dd's current Latin 1 teacher, isn't teaching Latin 2 and the class that Mrs. Coll is teaching works best for our schedule. I didn't sit in on any of the classes so I've had zero experience with her. This is not great to hear as my plan was to have dd take Algebra 2 with Mr. Reini and I've had no prior experience with him. Was one of the sessions you sat in on Algebra 2 by chance?
  2. I'm on my 2nd eighth grader now, and it's been a great year of exploring interests and building on strengths in preparation for high school. Yes, subject matter is tougher, but she is more capable. It's been a fun year :001_smile:
  3. Yes, this is an issue I have with WHA. Not providing a syllabus and book list at registration is not acceptable in my opinion, especially with their extremely rigid refund policy. Booklists are often not available until past the time for a full refund upon withdrawal. Other online providers are able to do produce this information before registration. Not sure why this is an issue for WHA.
  4. :iagree: A thousand times, yes!!! I have zero complaints about the youth group at my church. They have committed wonderful leaders who do make every attempt to help kids engage and build relationships at youth group. (And, IMO that is a part of their job. I don't understand the attitude of your youth group leader.) The do have in-depth teaching as well as worship and then just "hang-out" time too. They have several retreats throughout the year, social events out in the community, they schedule time to serve and help various community groups, and also offer weekly small group Bible studies. It is an awesome Student Ministries department. However, I would never force my two teens to attend. I would absolutely encourage them to give it several tries, maybe even year after year because the nature of groups do change. I would not enforce it though. I want my kids to own their faith and to learn how to nurture it. Part of that is picking and choosing what works for them. Your dd already goes to church with you and she is being spiritually fed that way. And, I agree with Catwoman that this opportunity to spend time together as a family brings about its own blessing. Sure, offer to do a one-on-one study with her and if she's interested, great. But, if she's not, cherish that time you can spend with her. SaveSave SaveSave SaveSave
  5. I am so excited to finally be able to post! Ds just got accepted to his first choice with an awesome scholarship - Allegheny College. He also got accepted with $ to Hope College, Calvin College, and Pacific Lutheran University. It's been a good day. We're still waiting on four more, but I think his decision has been made :001_smile:
  6. I decided to do Analytical Grammar with dd. We've done Rod and Staff grammar for years, but she needs some serious review. So, I decided to give a new program a try. We're actually using it now and will do the 2nd phase or unit (forget her terminology) in the fall next year too. I like that it isn't a full year program. For art, check out The Virtual Instructor. I've seen it recommended here many times and finally looked into it. Looks great! http://thevirtualinstructor.com
  7. Iron Bisglycinate. The liver pills I take are desiccated beef liver from grass-fed cattle. The brand is Perfect and I bought them through Amazon. The vitamin C pills I take are whole food nutrients instead of synthetic and the brand is Innate. I've done quite a bit of research and they all appeared to be the best supplements for me.
  8. We're using the bigger set too because dd wanted all the details :001_smile: I read several reviews of both and decided to go with the bigger set because my dd likes history and the vast amount of information available appealed to her. We are also using the Hewitt syllabus and Oxford tests, and dd is doing a good deal of supplemental reading. I have really enjoyed reading the Hakim books with her. It's been our favorite year of history so far!
  9. I am severely anemic too from heavy menstrual periods while also being perimenopausal. Most women's periods become more infrequent and less heavy as they move towards menopause, but not me! I've had 15-16 periods a year over the past two years, and they are very heavy. I've been slightly anemic for years and was aware of that, but over the past 12 months it's gotten much worse. When I had my blood drawn towards the end of 2016, and we saw how low the iron had dropped, my primary doctor sent me to a hematologist who insisted I receive an iron infusion. I've decided to wait on those (the side effects and risks are scary to me) and see if I can pull up my iron on my own. I met with my OB/GYN and we talked about the pros and cons of an ablation versus starting progesterone. I opted for progesterone for now and loved not having a period (or more) in the past 30 days. I just decided that the risks of a surgical procedure weren't worth it to me at this point. And, although my OB thought the ablation might throw me into full menopause, which I want, there wasn't a guarantee that would happen and I might have to go on the progesterone anyway. One thing I know about dealing with severe anemia is that you can experience a significant increase in irritability and emotional instability. All three of my doctors confirmed that. So, the PMS rage is possibly related to your low iron as well. So, even on the pill, you might continue with the raging until you iron recovers. My family is ready for my iron to increase :001_smile: Regarding the anemia, I finally found an iron supplement that I can stomach...literally. I've not been on supplements because all the various ones I tried in the past used to tear up my stomach. I now take vitamin C daily to aid in the absorption of iron, non-defatted beef liver pills, and Thorne iron supplements. I get my blood drawn in mid-Feb and I'm praying for some improvement! I hope yours improves quickly too!
  10. This is great! We're going to do this on the first non-rainy day we have this week.
  11. Those astronomy projects are fantastic! I need to have dd pick 2 or 3 of them to do along with our astronomy unit this year. I'm pretty sure the pan cookie of constellations will be selected. Thanks!
  12. I just checked out the Understanding Greek and Roman Technology course. I might be using that same history text as well, and it looks like a great add on. This is why I love these planning threads! You learn about so many other great options. Thanks :001_smile:
  13. I started a 9th grade planning thread 15 mins before you posted :001_smile: We're obviously in the same boat. You can see what I've decided in the other thread. It's called 2017-2018 9th grade planning. Can I ask what you're planning to use for Physics?
  14. I started planning about two weeks ago since the online schools we use will open registration in February. I'd love to see what others are planning for their upcoming 9th graders - the planning threads are always so helpful for me! Here's what I have so far: * Update 2/19 - working on planning today. Math Algebra 2 at WHA Science Physics - I have not put this together yet - need a text and a plan. hopefully through Clover Creek English Analytical Grammar Literature - This will line up with history once I get that sorted out. However, I do have LLftLotR that didn't get used this year after she changed her mind about which period of history she wanted to study. Wondering is it would be a good fit for ancient history? Also, is it enough for a 9th grader? Decided to use The Greeks from Romans Roads in combination with HoAW. Writing - Expository Writing 2 at WTMA - DD is so much happier with WWS/WTMA than IEW. History ?? We're doing US history this year using Hakim's The History of US. DD really enjoys the style of the books and the supplemental reading. I just received SWB's Ancient History text and need to get reading to see if this is a possibility. I guess I also need to work out her history sequence for HS, or at least have a rough idea. Decided to use The Greeks from Romans Roads in combination with HoAW. Latin Latin 2 at either CAP or WHA Electives and other stuff Looking for an intro to business class. Decided to sign her up for fall semester of Socratic Discussion Rhetoric level through WTMA. Business can wait until next year. Possibly something for culinary arts - looking at two of The Great Courses that might fit. Food, A Cultural History from the Great Courses plus Introduction to Baking and Pastry Art spring semester through Excelsior Classes. Possibly Professor Carol's A History of Early Sacred Music course. This can wait until next year. Continue with art lessons. Continue with piano lessons. Duolingo French Tennis
  15. We've had the same issue during the month of January. Weeks delay before getting anything back.
  16. theelfqueen - can you tell me what your 10th grader is doing for Culinary Arts? I have a raising 9th grader who wants to pursue CA and I'm not sure where to start. Thanks!
  17. No Spanish with Venable, but my ds took two years of Spanish with Mrs. Pliego and she is wonderful! Very caring and committed to the success of the students.
  18. I have talked about this many times with my 18 year old ds, and I usually focus on these points: 1. Pray. Seek God's will for your life by seeking Him. Spent time both talking with God and in stillness listening for His voice. 2. Read Scripture. There are plenty of very clear instructions/suggestions/commands for how we should be living while seeking out God's will for our lives. I don't believe seeking God's will is passive...there's no waiting around to see what door opens. While we are seeking, there is still action that can be taken. Serve others, seek to grow in our relationship with God, honor Him by the way we life, etc. Often, clarity comes as we do all those things. 3. Journal. Write out concerns, thoughts, insecurities, observations, vision, etc. 4. Seek spiritual counsel. Talk with a youth pastor or trusted adult who has a mature spiritual walk with the Lord.
  19. Thanks klmama! The business course he offers looks really worthwhile but perhaps better suited for an older high schooler. I'm glad to have this info about it for future years though!
