What did you like/dislike about it? Is the teacher's manual worth buying? I'm thinking of Chemistry 1 for my 8yr olds. I really want to get more organized with science. We've tried some fun kits but they never seem 'meaty' enough.

Help me guide a new HS mom w/ Gifted child
Jen500 replied to ...................'s topic in Accelerated Learner Board
I think that's the best advice! Singapore Math works well for gifted kids because it's easier to move through quickly, and just add extra practice as needed. There are placement tests at Singaporemath.com The Hoagies gifted website has many articles and resources. (Sorry, I can't figure out how to put in a link) Creative Homeschooling-A Resource Guide for the Smart Family, by Lisa Rivera, has also been very helpful for me. -
POLL: Okay, time to get down and dirty. Mac or PC?
Jen500 replied to nancypants's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I love my powerbook. I do have a pc for work stuff-I really don't like it. Did you know homeschoolers get a 10% discount-I think you can get one computer a year with that. (Like I could afford more than one!) -
Having such a discouraging HSing week!
Jen500 replied to Susan in TN's topic in General Education Discussion Board
So far I've avoided 'joining' any local hs groups because of this attitude. I HAVE met some some very non-judgmental moms here and there so I seek them out w/ideas. Isn't the point of homeschooling to do what works best for your family? Don't let a few people get you down-you know your kids best! -
Help! My head is swimming!
Jen500 replied to mommatlaw's topic in Parents' Forum Afterschooling Board
I guess I was an afterschooler for a few years. I mean, we didn't do workbooks or anything...it was just our lifestyle. Lots of books around the house. Fiction, non-fiction, science etc. Lots of reading aloud and reading on their own. Magazine subscriptions, frequent trips to the library (because they had limited access to the library at school and then could only check out one book!!!). Fun toys like lego and snap circuits. Limit the tv time. Did I mention lots of books? -

One ds is reading Fractions and Averages-the Mean and Vulgar Bits and he really likes it. He likes mathy, humorous books. I think there are samples at the Murderous Maths website. Do you know if your source is less expensive than Amazon? I'm still waiting for MM Vicious Circles and some Horrible Science books to arrive-it's taking a long time!

Zoo trip tomorrow: ideas for making it more educational?
Jen500 replied to Sue G in PA's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I have my kids use the zoo map to navigate the exhibits. -
Not a curriculum, but maybe she'd like the Murderous Maths series, by Kjartan Poskit, or some of Marilyn Burns' books (Math for Smarty Pants etc) Right now we use CWP w/Singapore. I've considered using MEP w/Singapore (it's free!) but it looks a bit overwhelming.

Reading level assessment
Jen500 replied to Mommy2BeautifulGirls's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
Why do you want to test her reading level again? To participate in something that's requires a certain level, or to find appropriate books for reading? -
Need your summer ideas for 7 year old and 5 year old
Jen500 replied to Hope's topic in Parents' Forum Afterschooling Board
I started homeschooling my 2 ds(8) this past January. I really wouldn't recommend buying much curriculum right now. I'd start with one area of interest (something your kids are into or an area they need help in) and try to make it fun. My boys needed some time to 'decompress' from ps. They didn't want to look at a workbook for awhile. Then I needed to really focus on noticing their learning styles. We were all so stressed from the ps by the time we started homeschooling-the best advice someone gave me was to just have some fun with the kids. I don't know your families situation so feel free to ignore my advice if it doesn't apply! -
Cleaning plastic outdoor furniture

they work great too. -
I don't have anything against game systems in general, I just don't want them in our house! We've had enough problems with my older two watching too much tv when we had cable. I've noticed the past few years that the less tv they watch, the less they want to watch. I don't mind if they play appropriate games when we're visiting someone. We seem to get enough activity w/the computers without problems.

We are about 3/4 through Lesson 1, Big Book 1, and we all love it. My kids are 8, and I have no Latin experience. So far everything is going smoothly. We had started out with Prima Latina and just weren't enthused.

Where can I find flag stickers (for all countries)...
Jen500 replied to Rhondabee's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My Rainbow Resource catalog has a variety of flag stickers. -
I have 3 boys and they have good days and bad days. I avoid 'punishments' because they just seem to harbor more anger. Sometimes I have to sit down one on one with dc and ask him what's going on with him. Usually I get a barrage of complaints about the other dc...I let it go on a bit and then I try to help him think of better ways to deal with his anger. I tell him some of my experiences dealing w/anger, hurt feelings etc. and some things I've done that helped. Even when I feel like yelling myself I try to stay calm (sometimes I have to step into the other room for a minute first). When I see them trying something new (like one ds will go hold his hamster) instead of yelling/fighting, I always let him know I noticed his effort. When I notice one ds continuously doing something 'mean', I have a talk-I tell him first the things he does that I like. Then I bring up the thing he's doing that I don't like and we talk. But I pick a peaceful time to do it-not after he's just had a fight w/his brother. The only 'punishment' I give is a time out for any physical violence-that's not tolerated. But usually both kids involved are really upset when it gets to the point of hitting/punching. I wish you luck! Jen

Has anyone had a response from an author your child wrote to? My boys like to write to authors-I think we've had a response from 1 out of 4. They love to get some kind of response. (Ds recieved a newsletter from Dav Pilkey). Jen

Wow, thank you soooo much for all the ideas. I was hoping for suggestions like these because my mind seems to have gone blank on the writing issue. The email and blog sounds like something he'd love. Sometimes he'll write a family newsletter on the computer, we print it, and he illustrates. I just never see any improvement (I'm the editor). Sometimes he'll write a letter to an author too. Today and yesterday he copied some poems from Shel Silverstein in his writing book-he enjoyed it, and he actually used proper capitalization, etc. I'm making a list of all these ideas to try. Thanks so much everyone! Jen

What brand of coffee do you drink?
Jen500 replied to Sena's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Eight O Clock. It used to be 3-something for 11oz and now $5. A treat is Pete's coffee.
