  1. My dss love to read-but I've never designated a reading time or counted books. For us, that would make it less fun. I make sure they have access to plenty of reading material, and have several comfy places around the house to read. They have a big bean bag in their room, but most of the time they prefer not reading in there. (Maybe as they get older they'll want to be alone more) I think you should go with whatever works for your family. Is there a certain time of day they'll grab a book on their own? Mine like to read in the morning before I get up, in the late afternoon, and then before bed.
  2. do you have a dog? Of course, my dog likes to dig in the compost pile if he can get to it.
  3. We don't use SoTW, but my dss read a huge variety of books, including history. We get some history through Lively Latin, which usually leads us to finding more materials from the library and internet. In the Fall we're going to start Living Math through History from http://www.livingmath.net. We've also covered some history when studying famous artists and doing art projects. Just how we prefer to approach history!
  4. Hi Laura, I'm sure you'll get a lot of good ideas from the board-I sure have! And I'm sure you've got some good advice to share.
  5. We've gone to Home Depot and Lowe's. Lowe's is our favorite-last time the kids made a nice periscope. Michael's stuff doesn't look as interesting to us because we do a lot of crafts at home.
  6. My dss have a wooden bunk bed that we bought used. I'm not crazy about it because there really isn't enough space for someone to sit up on the lower bunk. (I can't sit on it w/o hitting my head) Someday I'll get dh to build them loft beds so they can have their own space underneath. Craigslist is good if you're looking for used bunks.
  7. Have you read The Highly Sensitive Child by Elaine Aron? I first got it from the library and then bought it on Amazon. It has been very helpful for our family. It may help you understand your ds better and give you some ideas on useful, appropriate strategies for helping him and yourself. She never mentions 'gifted' in the book, but both myself and my dss are gifted and highly sensitive. I also like the book because she explains sensitivity in a way that doesn't necessarily make you feel like there is something wrong with your ds, it's just the way your ds is, and has it's benefits too.
  8. I felt financially prepared....but other than that I'm still learning as I go along.
  9. Thanks for the input. I'll try letting them come up with their own plan on finishing the lapbook. They're very creative so I'll try to be open-minded. Thanks for the website-they have a LOT of templates! I guess this'll be our last lapbook, unless they want to make their own. Each mini-book just has tidbits of facts, it seems more like the stuff they did in ps. Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't really like them.
  10. Maybe he's not into team sports. Our family isn't. We all enjoy riding our bikes through the trails and the neighborhood. Or hiking in the summer. It's good physical activity and we can do it together if we want.
  11. Does she get any exercise? Maybe some physical activity earlier in the day would help w/stress and with sleep.
  12. Debt stresses me. So I'd feel better paying off the debt, and maybe considering the pool next summer. I'd go visit your friend w/the pool a few times, and do something nice like bring lunch. That's just me though.
  13. We are trying a lapbook (Hands of a Child Mtn Habitats project pack) and my kids told me this morning that it's just not fun. I have to agree. I thought it would be fun because we're spending a few months in the mountains, and the boys like drawing and making things. I did get some extra books from the library, but the little projects in the lapbbok are just too simple and ds said "I don't like being told what to write down". It's supposed to be for 3rd-6th grade. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this lapbook more fun, more in-depth, more creative (less busy-work)? Or should we just scrap it. Maybe lapbboks just aren't our thing?
  14. You can try the placement tests at Singaporemath.com That's what I did when my kids started Singapore after being in ps.
  15. I agree. Everyone who has asked us this has just been making conversation or is curious. Then, when my kids tell them we homeschool, the reponses have all been neutral ("Oh") or positive. My kids tend to be very well-behaved when we go out and use good manners. (Now at home, that's a different story!!)
  16. We're going to try it out after the summer. The first thing I did was check my library to see which books they have. I think somewhere on the website she has a list of the main books for each unit, and I've bought most of those. And some of the other books from the list that looked really good and weren't too much $$. I still can't find a copy of Mathematicians are People Too Vol 1.
  17. I wish I could use one in my bathrooms!!!LOL
  18. I've been reading the threads on Latin programs. We're still doing Lively Latin Big Book 1, but I'm starting to think about what to use next. Maybe Big Book 2, or Latin Prep seems popular and I've looked at the sample at Galore Park and it looks ok. What have you used after Big Book 1? Would Latin Prep 1 be appropriate? (I'm learning along with the kids so it's hard for me to evaluate programs). Thanks!
  19. Don't forget retirement savings. We have an account for 'unexpected' expenses which really aren't unexpected. Like car repairs and our property taxes (paid once a year)
  20. it's a mastery program. I just add extra practice as needed.
