  1. So my seniors (high school) are interested in some kind of engineering. What kind of specific programs/careers should I tell them to look into? Am I understanding that there are more mechanical engineering graduates than there are jobs available, for example? Is that the general gist of this? (I realize part of it is lumping all STEM careers together)
  2. We love the aquarium and go there every time we visit! Hakone Gardens in Saratoga is nice for a short, low-key visit.
  3. I read about that recently--i had no idea! http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-40498292
  4. Well, that's exactly what I did....stopped using the library. With 3 kids and 4 different library cards it became difficult for me to keep up with all the different due dates (some of the items could be checked out longer than others, sometimes one of my kids would renew them online so the due date would change). We could easily have $7-8 fine/day so it racked up pretty fast. And my main problem was that our library had very limited hours and the drop-off box for items was ALWAYS full, so I could rarely return items when the library was closed.
  5. I recently cancelled all of mine too! The last straw for me when I got an email notice of a price increase for my upcoming order. The price didn't even match the price in my invoice, and both of those prices were higher than the price when I clicked on the item to just order it on it's own. 3 different prices and I couldn't even figure out what I would actually be paying. Not worth the hassle.
  6. Thank you. That was beautiful. Thank you for sharing some of his life with us.
  7. Chris, I'm so sorry for your family's loss. Cystic fibrosis and cancer....what a tough life your brother had. Hugs.
  8. DS and I both have out fafsa ids. I started his fafsa thinking I could just fill out the financial parts, and he could fill in the student parts later, but it starts at the 'beginning' with student info and won't let me skip ahead to the financial part? Is that correct?
  9. My kids go to b&m high school. The point at which I intervene is when they get a single grade that is much lower than they are capable of, and they can't tell me what went wrong and their plan to do better. That's when I have a discussion with them. This has only happened twice (seniors this year) and the first time, son took my advice (which was basically forcing him to email the teacher to set up a meeting). The 2nd time this same kid did NOT take my advice and regretted it later in the year. But he did learn from that experience so it wasn't a total loss. Life is a journey! lol. Now, the teachers at their school do not give a lot of grades, especially jr/sr year. So a not so good grade freshman year was not as worrisome to their overall grade as it was each following year.
  10. I don't know the 'right' answer , but one of my kids didn't study at all, and the other spent a few hours on prep for the PSAT 10. What they did do was study for the 11th grade PSAT and SAT at the same time, taking them both around the same time.
  11. Last year I bought a GE 4.2 top loader, from Lowes, originally $599 but bought on sale. I don't love it. I loved my old GE but after 16 years it had a leak. pros- you can adjust the water level (or let it be automatic) you can open the lid and look inside it's quiet compared to my old washer cons-sometimes it washes well, every once in a while I have to wash again because it clearly didn't use enough water. I did a delicate load once, and looked inside--looked like 1/2 inch of water in the bottom! The clothes never even got completely wet during the cycle!
  12. I will often have an afternoon snack of cheese almonds or other nuts hummus
  13. My ds is 17 and there are 2 friends so far that I have let him ride with. I feel that they are very responsible kids. There are a few other friends that I don't think he would even want to get a ride with.
  14. I can't imagine the how clogged the roads will be right after the Hurricane, with people trying to return to their homes.
  15. Oooh, that looks so good! King Arthur has some great recipes. I'll have to come back to this when it's apple season. The apple selection is horrible right now at my grocery stores. I don't remember ever having such a small selection of apples.
  16. Oh, I had to go look that up because I hadn't heard of it--Trunk club. I get fb ads for mm lafleur which is similar but marketed towards workwear I think. I guess this idea is becoming more popular now!
  17. Quill, I don't really like to shop in-store because I get overwhelmed, they don't always have my size in stock, and then I end up leaving with nothing because I can't decide if I really like something with just a few minutes in the dressing room. I LOVE shopping Nordstrom's online though. Their website has very good search bars to narrow down what you're looking for. And returns are as easy as putting the provided label back on the package and sending back usps. They really do have all price points and good sales. Just wanted to encourage people to give Nordstrom's a try, although after reading these Stitch Fix posts I can see the appeal for some ladies, and if it works for you, that's great too. :)
  18. I don't see any problem with the snacks listed. When you send your kids to public/private school, you are NEVER going to have everything just the way you want it. Some elementary kids here get dropped off at school at 6:30am, and then they could have lunch anywhere between 10:30am and 1:15pm. So they really do probably need a snack. Also, the school lunch foods in my district are all LOW CALORIE so it's no wonder that my own boys bring snacks when they get the school lunch, It's not enough food for them, and not enough calories.
  19. Awesome for them! I hope they're having a great day.
  20. I have twins who are seniors this year. Is it a bad idea for them to apply to the same colleges, if they are needing financial and merit aid? They both have very similar academic records and intended major (some type of engineering) I think for their safeties it should be fine, I'm just not sure about some of the other colleges.
