  1. And nuclear holocaust might still happen with Russia being a d!ck.

Okay then. So why do we bother educating our children then? Why did we all congregate here on a classical education board?

I think it is... profoundly cruel to take away a child's hope and replace it with nothing but empty existential angst.

All the pharmaceuticals for contraception, anxiety/depression & hormones/blockers can't be doing great things to the environment either.

My God, what a mess we're in.

(None of this is directed at any particular person, I'm just jumping off ideas. I know we're all trying to do our best as parents and believe me I know it's freaking hard)

I knew many people in my own generation who as teens and young adults declared they were never going to have kids.

Almost all went on to have kids.

Yep my own parents said that the world was going to end in a nuclear holocaust any minute so why have kids?

    Spoiler - they had kids.

Also, what a sad, depressing view of life we - as a culture - are apparently presenting to the next generation.

I love that for you. Some of us are made of extra stern stuff. It’s also for to recognize that ANY thread that touches on US culture these cause often gets co-opted by folks who don’t even live in the US and their pet issues/beefs. My personal view is that US residents (at least those regularly posting here) are more cognizant of the nuances here and can have more effective and productive conversations without that interference.

I did not run anyone off what a load of crap. If we're playing that game then I know plenty who have been 'run off' by the be kind side which will not deign any actually diverse opinion - or what you call 'interference'

this issue is not US specific, I don't really comment on US specific politics.

The idea that legislation has anything to do with this cultural moment seems to me misguided.

ETA: to expand on this a bit, I don’t think legislation created the movement and I don’t think legislation could fix much of the harm (in either direction) that is being done.

Legislation, or legal decisions, have been very helpful in the UK.

I don't know, I think legislation helps with norms/overton window but it's very chicken & egg. I think grass roots discussion helps some politicians realise the window is moving and get brave, and I think the reverse happens too - brave public figures make space for everyday people to speak too.

At the moment though, I think the conversation is so fraught and confused that legislation will probably make things worse...

  5. Sure, that's fair Danae. Though I'm not an American politician and I'm not for gender specific dress codes in schools. See, nuanced conversation and we find ground we agree on.

But the prison thing only came up after someone asked 'why do you care'

There is at least one male sex offender in the women's prison in my state right now so I care about that.

  6. Sure, vote for the one defending absurdities over the one who you believe is a rapist. Or don't vote. Or whatever.

What has that got to do with here on a homeschool, classical education board though? I would think that nuanced, persuasive discussion here would prevent/temper extremism? On both sides.

Whataboutism, ad hominems, political jabs (which I don't get because I'm not american) & insults aren't helping.

1). Most of the male rapists in women’s prison are on staff.
2). I didn’t mention a particular candidate.  It kind of sucks that there’s so many people I could have been talking about that you don’t know which one I was.

    1. So... we should put more male rapists in because the women are getting raped anyway? More than one thing can be bad. Feminists have been fighting against male prison guards in women's prisons for a looooooong time too.

    2. I'm not American. I don't follow American politics. More than one person can be bad at a time.

I am getting a good dose of humble pie with our current lot - yep. In it for themselves.

It doesn't really matter. The evidence for, child transition, say, remains low quality, regardless of whether Matt Walsh says it or not.

Exactly. I can't even express how tiring it is to meet the same old ad hominems and insults.

I just don't want women locked in cages with rapists and small children being told their bodies are wrong and the science community forgetting that mammals reproduce sexually...

I’m pretty sure you’re not either.  I’m also pretty sure you wouldn’t vote for someone who was a complete reactionary on gender issues just because s/he superficially agreed with you on trans topics.

I wish I was that sure about more of the people who vote in this country.

Okay, I do get this perspective, though I do think it's being used as a weapon to shut down any discussion.

What I don't get is how refusing to answer questions and insulting people who have been part of this education-centred community for a long time is helpful.

I also don't owe anyone an explanation on my politics but I suppose it can be summed up as - they're all (with rare exceptions) selfish and out of touch fake people who make everything worse.

No. I think if you’re missing the undercurrents/poisons these two posters are intent on injecting to the body politic, I can’t help you find them

Poisons now? Far out sneezy your projection can be seen from space.

Please, I'm begging you, engage in good faith. Assuage my concerns. I'd love to be wrong. Honestly and sincerely.

All I've gotten the last decade is 'it's evil to ask questions.' I've been on this board a long time, we all love our kids and try hard to be honest here. You keep insinuating I'm some political pot stirrer to avoid answering hard questions and that tactic doesn't work anymore.

I am honestly confused about something:  why the heck do most people care so much about this topic?

I mean, I get caring a lot if you or a child are trans or gender non conforming and are being impacted by the culture wars, but why on earth is this topic the center of the culture wars?

They're just bodies.  Even if people make a mistake with their own bodies, why is it such a big deal?  Why do we care so much about this topic to make it the center of our politics and culture wars?

'Just bodies'? Really. Why did our grandmothers bother with all that feminism stuff.

I'm allowed to care about any topic and I don't owe you my sob story.

This is a board based around classical education. I won't apologise for pursuing truth or asking very reasonable questions. Multiple thousand percent rise in teen girls identfying out of their womanhood is something I care about. Detransitioners, I care about.

No. I’m trying to stop the incessant trans=evil drumbeat that some people here keep pushing. It’s NOT nuanced or thoughtful or considerate. It’s hateful. It’s a minority within a minority population that’s unrepresented here and can’t speak for itself. It’s an easy target for scorn because so few have direct experience. It’s being bullied left, right and center by folks who claim to mean well but do real harm in the process. It’s gross.

Where have I said trans = evil? Is asking for explanations of extraordinary claims 'bullying'? Just the 'vibe' again?

  13. Fwiw Danae, I wasn't talking about your post. I was talking about the numerous times/graphics that try to explain the sex 'spectrum' that place pcos as further along towards the male side of the spectrum than just female. Such as the scientific american one which lists irregular periods and low estrogen under 'intersex'

Because they are discussed as also-rans, detritus by you and others. You’re not a physician for whom this information is relevant to their work. For the vast, VAST majority of us, this issue has no bearing on how we react to and treat people. Harping on it makes it seem definitive in your outlook toward and treatment of people which is abhorrent. And if that’s NOT how you’re treating people, just talking shit behind their backs, shame on you.

Please quote where I have ever discussed anyone as anything like 'detritus'

As far as I can see you're the only one hurling insults.

Unless, you think recognising female bodies is an insult. In which case, why?

Intersex people are? THEY’RE PEOPLE. They exist. They deserve inclusion. They don’t fit your narratives. This woman with a vagina has testes. She’s not a man. She has never felt like or identified as a man. She identifies as a lesbian woman. It doesn’t match bigots priorities. https://amp.theguardian.com/sport

Why would you assume that correctly identifying a person's sex - which can help diagnose sex specific disorders of sexual development - means they are seen as lesser humans?

It doesn’t make her something other than a woman if that’s how she sees herself. The issue is others imposing an identity on folks other than themselves. Long before I ever knew I had PCOS, 25+ years ago, met DH, married or had kids (via IVF) , I was SURROUNDED by non-het women, mostly black/brown. I had no idea, so ingrained was my socialization wrt binary sex/sexuality. All of this…you must be/cannot be crap is exacerbating the problem folks say they want to solve. You’re forcing people into boxes. Life is much more complex than that and we don’t know a lot of things…still.

Why is saying female bodies exist 'forcing people into boxes'?
