  1. Hehe, all I can hear is cheerleader Brittany from the show 'Daria'
  2. Dd went on to hunger games too. I did read the Peregrine books (dd insisted lol) and I didn't notice a lot of bad cursing - but there was some pretty dark stuff.
  3. A quick answer would be Audiobooks in the car! Story of the world, story book of science, classical kids, geography songs etc. I'm pretty sure there's a Latin with audio somewhere... Seems like a fairly simple way to squeeze in some content and redeem the driving time. Even just on ipod/headphones for the olders, ask for a narration before you get out of the car!
  4. I use each piece at the pace we need rather than a whole level. For Caesars English, we are using it behind schedule, and are just now beginning CE2 even though we finished grammar voyage. I also don't do all the writing assignments, but we do a wwe style writing across the curriculum so mct is not our main writing. We have found the jumps in difficulty appropriate so far.
  5. I think that sounds fine. I might add in the well trained mind library list and go every fortnight - so they have books on all those subjects to read through. I would also spend a little time thinking about what you already have/do around the house that would 'count'- simply being intentional about using opportunities, noticing things and answering questions goes a long way at these ages.
  6. Exactly. Don't trust anything that the dailyfail 'reports' - it's mostly copy/pasted from fb.
  7. Yes, we did one for dd. It doesn't have the '.last name' thing though. Just went in to Gmail and you can just add an account.
  8. Jean, I think it was you who once said something to the effect of 'maybe trailer park to ivy league is too big a jump in one generation' I think about that often. It goes with the marathon and child you have comments for me - work with what I have, do what we can, but don't kill myself along the way.
  9. As someone who picked it up naturally but was never taught grammar formally, I have gained so so much from going through it with my kids. SWB'S talk rang true for me, that the natural grammar will take you through to about first year university, then the ideas become more complex. That is exactly what happened to me, the writing that I got away with in high school didn't cut it and I didn't know why.
  10. Thanks for this Arcadia, I haven't seen it before. Could you please tell me a bit about how you use it - I had a look at the website but I'm still not sure. I would have loved a mentor type program like this in high school when all the boys were indignant at the girl beating them in maths...
  11. Good to know, thanks! I keep an eye on better world books as well.
  12. I keep looking at athenas but cannot make the time difference work and our internet isn't the most reliable for streaming video. :( maybe one day...
  13. I'm about even for Adalia and Sylvia, I can't do super popular even though it's a nice name. Adalia probably just wins out due to the personal connection. It's not that weird, and I've never regretted using the weird names that I love. Adalia Sylvie? Ada Sylvie?
  14. Best thread ever. 6 years in I'd say - routine and family culture. Think about it and be intentional about it. Homeschooling is a way of life, create the atmosphere you want to live in. It's not as showy as jumping into a full K program but so much more helpful.
  15. My 11yo would love something like this! She used to do a writing class but we moved and I haven't found anything else (or time to start it...)
  16. A mix of Singapore, miquon, mep, life of fred. I'm there right now with my young 6y/o. My main goals are number sense and joy and success experiences. We did some mep - I like reception. Singapore is our main spine and we read through life of fred. I use cuisenaire rods and bits and pieces of miquon - but I've done miquon with two students already so I'm fairly confident. I am hoping that BA2 comes out in time for my son.
  17. Thanks for your reply! Beast academy is done by Aops, I'm quite keen for her to finish off at least 5b/c before we move on. I do like the idea of aops from here on, but international shipping makes it a more expensive option.
  18. Hi there smart people! This is my first foray into middle school maths so I'm just wanting some feedback please. Dh just nods and says 'sounds good...' This is all quite different to how maths was organised when I went to school - we didn't have delineated subjects like algebra/geometry etc, just grade x maths, so I'm having trouble conceptualising exactly where we are or where to go. Dd is finishing up beast academy 5b and really enjoys BA. She is also halfway through the LoF preA series, dabbles in Jacob's human endeavor and Singapore 6 reviews. She is pretty good at maths, has quite an intuitive understanding, and enjoys it. She is a young 11, would be in her last term of grade 5 if she was at school - I'm not at all worried about grade levels, just for context. She doesn't like spinning wheels with too easy, she likes a bit of reachable challenge. So my current plan is to finish out the ba/LoF preA series and then... I don't exactly know. I like the sound of jousting armadillos, I think she'd enjoy that. I have a copy of lial's bcm on my shelf, but looking through it, it seems that she could do 80+% of it, so now I'm not sure what to do with prealgebra. Is lial's considered a complete preA course? I'm tempted to go through jousting, supplement with some khan/bits and pieces from my shelves, and then see if she can handle aops preA in about 6-9months - near her 12th birthday. Thoughts? Does it sound like she's where she should be/behind/ahead? Suggestions or book recommendations are more than welcome! Thank you!
  19. Good luck clemson, hope you enjoy it as much as we have! I have done mud trilogy, Alice/Peter/Mole trilogy and am partway through the search trilogy with dd - we had already done treasure island, she read call of the wild this year but hasn't done invisible man yet. I read through the parent manual for my own information but rarely do assignments.
  20. She got the mud trilogy to go with island for her dd. She didn't do a trilogy for herself, though she is generally quite well read and familiar with most of the titles - as I said, she's a very good English teacher!
  21. Yes, I seem to remember some mechanics in paragraph town... Dd is mostly through voyage, I am just starting to have her go through daily grams (gr6) just because I happen to have it on my shelf. We've done mct since island and I'm really pleased with her retention.
  22. I get 'are you allowed to do that' and 'so the school sends you books' a lot. What I want to reply - "of course I'm allowed, they're my kids not wards of the state" and "if they did, I'd get a good laugh" Because I'm a good representative, I instead say - "yes, homeschooling is a valid and legal choice" and "no, but there is a wealth of amazing resources available for homeschoolers"
