  1. I have been at this 18 years and things still never go as "planned". I had better success rate when the kids were all younger! 😂
  2. Just wanted to "bump" this. There was some great information in this thread. â¤ï¸
  3. I am loving all the replies! Thank you! i have a daughter in nursing school (first semester starts in January) and another doing dual credit, and another on their heals. I'm not sure if the third daughter will pursue a college degree, but in our home I want them to at least "try" a few classes at our community college - if a degree wasn't an issue I'd love to be a college professor- they seem to have more leeway in their teaching. The point of my job would be to help them go to school so my going back to school isn't really an option. I am really enjoying reading everyone's stories and perspectives!
  4. I have homeschooled all 4 of my children, and my last one is in highschool so I am nearing the end of my homeschool years. I'm in my early 40's- had children early so no formal education last highschool, no working outside the home in over 20 years. ITs time to start looking at employment options- and I don't know where to begin. I honestly would like to open a cottage school or work with at risk kids (though I live pretty far out) but without a degree- I don't even know where to look to get into something like that. I need a Cindy Rollins miracle where my new students are dropped in my lap. 😂 So how did you know what you wanted to do when you were finished homeschooling?
  5. I am not an expert, but I believe it is September due to the timing of the Jewish feasts. Each one represents not only an event in the past, but a event that has happened since. While I am not a prepped or one who believes the end of the world will be here Saturday- I know today starts the Feast of the Trumpets- and that is me next Jewish feast to be fulfilled in modern times. So, that may be why September keeps being chosen. I'm on my way out so I hope that makes sense. Edited to add a link for clarification: http://christinprophecy.org/articles/the-feasts-of-israel/
  6. Not Lanny either, but we just bought 2 laptops based on his recommendation directly from Blair tech group and they were awesome. We did buy the 1 year warranty.
  7. Yep. My hubby bought our last house and I had never seen it. He has higher standards than I do- I can live just about anywhere and be fine. This one we designed and built together.
  8. I only had 4 and the comments were insane. I still get them now that mine are teens.
  9. When they were younger I liked Pocketful of pinecones. Recently though- Mere Motherhood. I do not have as many children as Cindy- but our stories are similar, we are at similar places in life, and I could really relate to that book.
  10. I am not sure how I found this old thread, but it was very refreshing to me and I wanted to bump it up so it may encourage someone else tonight.
  11. Texas. 😊 And Arctic Mama I am impressed with the speed at which you can reassemble. My husband is that fast, but I am still working on speed. 😉
  12. Not OP, but I have a question.... did you use the blocks and manipulative at this level?
  13. Yep me too. 23 years this month and he is still my best friend
  14. I love THM. Some people make it more complicated than it has to be. It definitely makes you think through what you are putting in your body. I have lost about 70 pounds- 40ish of it on THM. For E breakfasts I like to use sprouted bread- I make the peanut butter junkie and maybe a bit of fruit to make peanut butter toast and fruit, I also scramble egg whites and smear a laughing cow wedge on the toast to make an egg sandwich, I also make fruit filled crepes, and the big boy smoothie. I'm not sure if you would consider those "sweet" or not. Sometimes I will just do a plain piece of toast and protein shake.
  15. Yep, Air Force definitely has the more "cushy" living arrangements, and more family friendly than other branches. My son choose Navy because of the education opportunities, the rate he is in, and because it offered him the program he was most interested in. Being a public forum I can't give many details, but research and see which branch will be the better fit for your child. My husband is a former Marine, and we know a ton of vets from all branches and they all have their pros and cons depending on the individual.
  16. My son was homeschooled throughout his education and enlisted in the Navy. We are in Texas, but even here the recruiters/ MEPS weren't very knowledgeable about homeschool requirements. My son had several college courses before he left, but they were more used by the Navy to back up his homeschool transcript. His security clearance took a bit longer to get because they didn't have numerous teachers and coaches to interview. He has done very well after we jumped through hoops. I didn't understand all the hoops we had to go through since he scored above the 90th percentile on his ASVAB - I would have thought that would have spoken for itself.
  17. I would look into The Power in Your Hznds by Sharon Watson if you just need more practice on different types of writing. Once I feel proficient on writing we just write- using prompts from their history or any prompts you can find online. For argument formation you may look at CAP writing or Lost tools of Writing- but not sure if either of those have a ruberic to grade by. Maybe Writeshop level 2?
  18. Yes that's it! Thank you. I will copy that and send it to them. I have never heard of it, but the school isn't being much help- and I don't understand why.
  19. Hoping someone here can help me. My nephew is in public school. He was in a special reading class using a peach overlay sheet to help him read until this year. This year the school moved him out of that class and took away his peach sheet. He is failing. His parents went to the school and asked to buy one for him to use, but the school refused. I have no idea why or really what it is- it's supposed to help him focus on the words better. Can someone's help me find a peach sheet so I can buy 2 or 3 for him?
  20. I have been working with local parents recently to offer an alternative education similar to what I had in highschool. I had a difficult highschool experience and choose to go to a highschool where I could work at my own pace to graduate on my own time schedule. I have been homeschooling for 16 years now, and though I don't have it all figured out, nor am I as active online as others- but I have noticed so many teens slipping through the cracks of our education system. I am starting to offer a correspondence school of sorts to help. Basically you are still homeschooling, but I have them work on one subject at a time (and send them the materials), grade it, keep their transcript, etc... when they finish the required credits I send you the transcript for you to sign. It's a flat monthly fee. You are still responsible for the education as I am not there to make sure someone else isn't doing their work, although I do pay attention to handwriting. 😉 There are many borderline students who will/do fall through the cracks and I wanted to give them a chance as well as the parents who want to homeschool but are not sure they have the time and resources. It's not a perfect education, but it's better than the alternative.
  21. I had never heard of a CISS, so I looked it up on Amazon. I definitely do not have a $300-$500 printer, nor do I know anyone who does. Looks great though if I ever could spend that kind of money.
