  2. I am so sorry I just saw this! That sounds like a good plan. I like moving back & forth between curriculum to keep things fresh too. We are really enjoying Level 4! We tried to juggle W&R with tgtb L4 while finishing up IEW ATF&F that her coop was doing. That was too much. We have dropped the coop & solely focussing on tgtb & I have been very happy with everything in level 4 ! We have done the concurrent lessons in the creative companion and are almost done with part 1. I flipped through part 2 & the rest of the creative companion, and I really like the writing assignments. I think we will just keep on keeping on with tgtb for now. Maybe we will revisit W&R this summer. But I am really happy with TGTB level 4 and my daughter is doing really well with it too. I hope you are able to make all the things you want to do work! Enjoy !
  3. I saw that from tgtb. You will have to let me know what you think of it if you use it. On a whim last night I bought Sonlight Science D’s pack. Some of the books I was thinking of using already so It seemed to be a good package. It touches on Biology, Taxonomy, and Human Anatomy.... we shall see!
  4. Math: CLE 500’s LA ; tgtb level 5 & BF History of the Horse History: Tgtb Y4: Ancient Rome, The Reformation/ History of the bible, Slavery/ The Civil War Era, The Civil Rts Movement, Post WW2 History Science: Sonlight Science F: Health, Medicine, Human Anatomy plus Tgtb Maturation Unit Art & electives: Water Color, Theater Suessical the Musical with coop, cooking challenge competition class in coop Bible: Case for Christ with coop, L&L bible & hymn study PE: Beach days, Park days, Coop recess, horse back riding 2x a wk, bike riding, swimming, dog walking.
  5. Thank you for saying this! This was my initial thought & “feeling” looking through books 2 & 3. I haven’t ordered anything yet because I just couldn’t bring myself to order book 2.... she can easily write a multi paragraph narrative, so your comment has been very helpful!
  6. Thanks, yes, You are quite right and I meant “narrative writing”, not narrations. I actually think we did more narrations in W&R then IEW. Since we are coming off of a year of written narratives in IEW (we disliked it sooo much) I think the title W&R Narrative 1, 2 is throwing me off because of the IEW narrative aversion rt now.... lol, if that makes any sense. I only have the fables book so went back through it & we started halfway through it again this week...... we still love it, but not sure what book we will do next.
  7. W&R stands for Writing & Rhetoric. It is a writing curriculum from Classical Academic Press. We love it so much more then IEW
  8. It does look reading heavy, which I like. I like when reading is built into an LA spine like that, then I can just let her choose & read books about her own interests. Anyhow, I am Interested to hear your progress and see which direction you take! Good luck ❤️
  9. I hope it works for you both! On another note, You said your son did W&R and level 4? How did you like it? I am trying to decide whether to continue on to Tgtb level 4 with W&R or just do W&R and a different grammar/spelling. Were you able to use W&R with L4, or is it too much writing? I keep looking at it and we love W&R & tgtb, but I keep thinking “remember-Less is more for this child”. I don’t want to try to tackle too much... lol Level 4 seems so different in format, we like the art but my daughter does not like geography. She already flipped through it and grimaced.... not a good sign as she really loved levels 1-3. Ugh! What to do, what to do!
  10. Yes! That is exactly what I did with my youngest- dropped everything but tgtb level 2 and just focussed on that for LA and she thrived! Less is more for her - maybe yours too?! It was easier for me as well. Then when we completed level 2, we started level 3 (which was a lot of review from 2 blah!). She begged to do writing. So We did W&R after completing Level 2. I don’t know what your goals are, but at this stage, I think if you want to minimize- wait to complete level 2, then start W&R. Doing W&R and L2 would have been too much at the stage we were at. My daughter also wasn’t ready for a writing curriculum until after tgtb 2. Hope that helps
  11. I see, we actually loved the spelling rules & dictation within the coursebook lessons themselves. My daughter thrived with level 2 (after finding what worked for us, dictation was difficult at first). We did not do the sp words from the companion because those words are read & practiced within the coursebook lessons- they are used within the sp dictation sentences as well. So you are actually learning & working with all of the spelling words without knowing you are. This replaces busy work, drill & kill. But, maybe that has changed in the new updated version, not sure. But ordering the hard copy was worth it to me. I would wait until after level 2 to start W&R, but that is just me. My daughter is a creative, natural writer and this progression worked well for her.
  12. What level are you using in tgtb? We did tgtb levels 1-3 and I used W&R with Tgtb level 3. We skipped all of the writing workshops in tgtb 3 and Did W&R instead. We used W&R sporadically, maybe every other week & we loved both together, it made for a really lovely combo! But, if you have a spelling you like, then you could drop tgtb, use W&R, and all you would have to add is a grammar and read books of your choice. Easy grammar comes to mind. I did this last yr- after tgtb level 3; we continued W&R with spelling one week, then Easy grammar with spelling the next week. Again, not sure what age, level you are thinking though.
  13. I need help with W&R placement. My 10 year old natural writer just finished IEW's All Things Fun & Fascinating through our Coop. It was not our favorite. It was pretty easy for her, but dreadful. Before we did IEW, we went through W&R book 1 Fable. We absolutely LOVED it and I would like to continue on with it. I have been looking through books 2 - 4, and having a difficult time deciding where to place her! We did so many narratives in IEW I am thinking book 2 would be more of the same. I want her to be challenged but still enjoy it. Book 3 appeals more to us. Book 4 seems like it might be just rt. skill wise but the content just doesn't appeal to me as much. I also keep reading that book 4 is difficult, so I am unsure where to jump back in. Has anybody else been in a similar situation after IEW and have any Thoughts?? Thank you!!
  14. Have you looked at Rod & Staff Phonics workbooks? We loved those
  15. Mystery of Science is really fun! The Good & The Beautiful has faith based open & go Science Unit studies that fit your criteria.
  16. I second Rod & Staff; Spelling by Sound & Structure or Building Spelling Skills by Christian Liberty Press
  17. Have you looked at The Good & The Beautiful ? It is family style for Science & History. Science goes by units so you don't have to be locked into one science study for the whole year and it is is open and go, very easy to use.
  18. Thank you so much! I am curious to hear out it works out for you. I don’t know why grammar is so difficult for me as a subject.
  19. Thank you so much for all of this info! The songs sound really fun too. Do you know of the levels cover punctuation as well?
  20. Have you used Well-ordered language? I would love to get some insight on how it works & what you like about it! Does it teach any punctuation along with analyzing sentences?? I am not seeing how it works from the samples. We Love W&R and will continue on with it but I cannot figure out what grammar to pair with it.
  21. I have not read the comments- but my daughter who has been battling the flu, after she had strep throat, woke up last wk screaming that her jaw hurt. I thought it might have been an ear ache because she does have such a congested head. Then yesterday she said the other side of her jaw hurt. I wonder if it is some wierd virus going around ?? We are in CA
  22. I Love this thread! My year completely changed from what I had planned. We moved. Then January 2010 hit and my 9th grade son who started out in PS came home and my 3rd grade dd who started out homeschooling, went to a private school hybrid homeschooling Co-op 2 days a wk on campus, 3 days at home. My 11th grade son went to PS and my 24 yr old dd moved out with a 37 yr old (sigh, I am not coping very well with that at all). Original Plan for my 3rd grader was: Math: singapore 3A/B, Multiplication math Facts 6 wk class, Jiji Math for fun. We switched to CLE 3, and love it! She did the class but it wasn't helpful. LA: TGTB 3 using only parts and pieces, CAP W&R fables, Building Spelling Skills 3, Easy Grammar 3, pentime 3 cursive We did all of that until Jan, and now we are using ABeka Language 3, IEW ATF&F, Wiseguide Spelling, all because that is what the co-op is using, but I disike Abeka, WG & IEW greatly and I supplement with TGTB 3 and can't wait to drop IEW for W&R, my daughter loves W&R much more too. We kept Pentime 3. Fall Lit: Sign of the Beaver writing a book report: 6 wk class We did this, it went well! Winter & Spring Lit: bravewriter single arrows coinciding with Science units: Nim's Island Then The Wind In The Willows We tried Wind In The willows, and it did not go over well, thinking Bravewriter is not for us, I just could not get into a good rhythm with it. Science: Fall; TGTB Space Science & STEM class, We did this, really like tgtb science unit, and will do another. Winter: TGTB Water & Our World. probably wont get to this. Adventure of Sharks & Dolphins class, doing this now and it is just meh Spring: Frogs & Toads, we did this, watched the tadpole become a frog and we now have 2 happy frogs. Natural Disasters class This will start in April History/Geography: TGTB history yr 1, Unit 4, Beautiful Feet Around The World We finished TGTB H1- loved it! We have dragged our feet on BF and the co-op does M0H ancients which we is just OK, but they are going way too quickly through it so we aren't getting as much out of it as we could. being with the co=op and having to stay on lesson to check boxes off is not our thing! Bible/memory: AWANA Dropped out in Jan. CO-Op; cooking, art masters, PE Dropped out off classes to go to hybrid co-op but my daughter misses this co-op. It was parent run, and intensive, I had a major meltdown and needed a reprieve from this so that is why I traded the parent run co-op for the private school hybrid. On a positive note, I am getting my energy back, my kids all seem to be doing well now in Feb, and I have plenty of curriculum for my 4th grader for next year. We can do the 3rd grade stuff we didn't finish for 4th grade rt, lol?!!!! my brain hurts
  23. Mystery Science is great or The Good & The Beautiful has super easy, open & go Family Science Units that are great. I also think there is nothing wrong with doing child-led, un-schooling science or just nature study for your kids ages.
