  1. Is it true that Amish have lower rates of infant mortality? If so, why?
  2. I have no idea but have you contacted the Canada Revenue Agency? They might be able to answer your questions.
  3. Thanks. I don't want yeast either. My kids don't do well with yeast. Is there something I can do to avoid the yeast? I was thinking of getting those jars where you can extract the oxygen but I haven't done that yet.
  4. I saw a video in which a woman used the juice of one lemon and half a teaspoon of salt to ferment a small amount of turmeric and ginger bulbs. She just mixed them all together so the pieces of bulbs were more or less submerged. She said she would leave it unrefrigerated. Will the lemon juice go bad after several days because it is fruit juice and not water or does the salt conserve it. She mixed it in a plastic bowl but said she was going to pour it in a glass bottle and said nothing about removing the oxygen. I have started fermenting things with salt water and I am using cabbage leaves in Mason jars to cover them and pouring water over the surface of the cabbage leaf to make sure they are immersed. If I follow this woman's recipe for turmeric the melon juice will not be immersed in water. Will it develop mold? I am thinking of giving this to my kids to increase health and they don't do well with mold.
  5. Michael's has basic coloring books for $1. Walmart? I have gotten them at garage sales for less than 50 cents.
  6. After not reading much for a while I have read a ton in the past month: Some of these take place in Britain. I will put a (B) beside them. (B) My Not-So-Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella (very light, but good) The Book Thief. It took me forever to read this because I had seen the movie and found it very similar. Fates and Furies. By Lauren Groff. I didn't like it too much but I liked the way half of the book was told by the husband and half the wife. Best Day Ever. By Kaira Rouda Not great but cleverly crafted. A Thousand Splendid Suns Loved it, though very heavy! A Man Called Ove. I just finished it today and I will miss all the characters from it. I can see this book becoming a very good movie if they got really good actors. I hope to start Madame Bovary. With DS11 I have been reading (B)Crispin, and (B)Treasure Island. With DSs16, 14 I just finished The Golden Compass and have started The Subtle Knife -Love these! We might read Sense and Sensibility soon.
  7. I watched an online talk with him last night. he emphasized that he is not against antidepressants at all but we need something more. We cannot ignore the social aspects of people's lives and that rises in depression in society are caused by loneliness and disconnectedness so the way to make people less depressed has to happen at a society level, not just an individual level. He told a nice story of a community that came together and how it made the people happier. I found nothing to disagree with in what he said. He also said that he was not really saying anything new or anything that was not intuitive to us all.
  8. Do you know what they use to spray for bed bugs and fleas? I did not know about this. Do they wash the clothes they sell? I have always wondered about that. Anyways, I'd hate to think that I was bringing a bunch of extra and toxic chemicals home just by thrift shopping.
  9. I had never heard of this and just googled it. It looks like fun.
  10. I was thinking of reading these with my HS-age kids. I was wondering which would you read first? Why am I thinking they would somehow complement each other? Also, do either of them have any romance or sexual content?
  11. That's the first time I've seen that style, except for maybe a clown. If it becomes popular I will definitely pass. It must be for the really avant-garde. It does provide ample storage though. You could put some binders in there or a stack of books, or your lunch, or two lunches, a laptop and an extra sweater, as long as you don't walk at all. Walking would be a problem.
  12. I'm confused. If I put a jug out in my suburban backyard and let it fill with rain or snow and no animals crawl inside and then I drink it without filtering it, will it make me sick?
  13. I'm proud of tackling many items on my to-do list. I'm proud of becoming more organized and figuring out new ways of managing my time. I'm proud of buying a sewing machine and using it a few times. i'm proud of exposing my children to new things. I'm proud of trying a few new recipes and meals and repeating them. I'm mostly proud that I took every moment my children would let me to teach them.
  14. I'm glad you're enjoying your volunteer experience! Can you have a chair there?
  15. Great idea for a thread! Lots of interesting posts! I am watching a documentary by PBS on the history of New York City. So much new information for me and very interesting! I am reading Homo Deus which discusses what the author thinks will happen to humanity in the future. I find it really interesting! I am looking at books on creative lettering and trying to copy them. It's going slow but I like it.
  16. I was hoping that if I used the salt water I could skip the kneading process. Can I do it without kneading?
  17. I was buying natural sauerkraut but now I want to make it so we can have more.
  18. Oh, I have to wait that long and then put it in another jar?
  19. I want to ferment cabbage and I have looked at how to do it and feel confused. I have decided to do it this way. Tell me if this will work. I will chop the cabbage and put it in a mason jar so it is almost full. I will fill the jar with a brine made of water and 2 tablespoons of dissolved salt and possibly the contents of 1 probiotic capsule. I will shut the jar and put it in the cupboard for how many days until I open it and then I will store it in my fridge. I am scared to do this. It's for my children. Will this work? I want it to be simple.
  20. White Christmas Silver Bells O Holy Night Old Toy Trains lots of others
  21. Thanks! He stopped screaming. This is usual behavior for him but the past few years it has gotten less frequent but when it does happen it's worse because he's stronger. He does get irritable bowel symptoms and he has severe sensory issues (i.e.. the past few days he has been sitting in corners and refusing to leave) and they are intertwined together. His constipation has gotten a lot better over the past few years but he had diarrhea the other day and did not go after that. Tonight he went 3 times. I really hope he got all the discomfort out and will sleep well and comfortably tonight. He has a wonderful smile when his discomfort is lessened. His smile is truly an inspiration.
  22. My 16 year old son with special needs is screaming and moaning. He is stomping on the floor so hard that I don't think our house can take it. This behavior has come and gone sporadically over the past few days. He has had some bad diarrhea so I am thinking that's it. I am feeling scared. It's horrific. It's Christmastime and I want so badly for my family to be happy but you need peace to be happy, not loud scary banging noises. I can't believe my life.
