  1. Anne of Green Gables if you have not read it recently. It is not just for children. The writing is beautiful.
  2. no, and what your friend has sounds strange but it is harmless. if it makes her happy it is fine because she is not hurting anyone.
  3. Yes, I think "aura" is supposed to be the colored light that surrounds a person when it is used by the New Age people who look at auras for a living. I guess I have heard the word used in everyday language to mean the energy a person puts out or "atmosphere of a person" would make sense too. So, a little different from "personality".
  4. I want to understand this. So, it might take you over 10 years to make back your money and start making a profit?
  5. I'm going to throw the word "aura" out there, not because it's my favourite but because nobody has mentioned it yet and it might fit with what you are looking for. And where is Albeto?
  6. I finished The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. It was mostly a light read with nice characters. I also read The Attack by Yasmina Khadra. This is about suicide bombings and not a light read but has depth and good writing. I started The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton which I am enjoying for it's mystery aspect. It's nice to read a book that is mysterious but does not involve crime (at least from what I've read so far. No spoilers please.) To add to our homeschooling reading we started The Chosen by Chaim Potok and we are enjoying it so far.
  7. So many people saying real estate. Why was I always told not to invest in real estate, or that it was too much of a gamble or headache?
  8. Doesn't Air B&B have a fairly reliable review system? Traveling alone as a woman can be risky but usually everything is fine. You can protect yourself by reading reliable reviews, not going to deserted places alone at night, staying sober, choosing female hosts. I have sometimes felt uncomfortable taking taxis alone. Your concerns are completely understandable though most people who interact with tourists are good.
  9. When I was in school a student would get suspended, have detention or some kind if punishment for swearing AT ALL. A teacher berating students publicly in writing using swear words? How can this not be wrong and unprofessional and should it not be punished? OP, I understand that you would not want to speak up but I wish one of the parents would. I wish that guy would be punished. I bet the kids would like it too. I bet they don't like reading his comments. It's demeaning.
  10. When you read a novel, which do you prefer? I can't decide. Soft covers are easier to hold but hard covers can be nice. Is there anything else you look for in a novel (other than content of course). I wish everything was large print with my eyes ring how they are these days. I guess hard cover novels tend to have bigger print maybe or some soft cover books have really tiny print. I also love books with a built-in ribbon bookmark and books with very thick pages.
  11. I finished The DaVinci Code and I am now reading The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. Both captured my attention.
  12. Stock up during garage sale season. You can find books, mugs, gadgets, clothing, novelties for dirt cheap. people often sell unused stuff like gifts they did not like. Then hide it and doll it out throughout the year. You can even find wrapping paper and very cheap gift bags at garage sales.
  13. I think I have the flu. My main symptoms are a mild dry cough, fever, fatigue, sick voice and aches and pains. It started Wednesday afternoon and has continued. The whole family is sick but the rest of them have worse coughs and not much fever. Anyways, right now it is the sleepiness and fatigue that are getting to me. I have been lying down almost this entire time and sleeping on and off during the day, feeling dazed. I keep telling myself that I will get up and be productive but then I just lay there. Today I forced myself to go for a walk thinking it might give me energy but it didn't. The house is a pigsty and I'm too lazy to clean up. At what point in an illness should a person tell themselves that enough is enough?
  14. I finished The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and have started The DaVinci Code which I have never read.
  15. What was happening with her immune system before the time when you first noticed symptoms? Any illness or infection? Any antibiotics, medication or vaccines? Any special insect bites? Any changes to her diet? Has she developed any sensory sensitivities? any sensitivity to noise, touch, bright lights, increased pickiness with food, increased appetite? Increased fear? Have there been any changes to bowel movements? Any rashes or skin problems? Any new allergies or sensitivities? Have you checked her for seizures? Any new night waking? Has she noticed what is happening to her or expressed anything about it?
  16. Are congeners found only in alcoholic beverages such as wine? Are they ever found in juices or food? If so, which ones?
  17. Why do all these young men think that killing a bunch of innocent people is what they want to do in life? Is it a desire for fame? Today there are way more opportunities for fame. Anyone can post videos of themselves on the Internet. So so so sad!
  18. I used to watch figure skating a lot but I haven't much over the past 10+ years. I was watching some recently and I noticed that the women's outfits show more on the rear than they used to. I guess this is the norm now? It made me a bit sad because a lot of these skaters are quite young and they probably don't have much choice and they are athletes who have trained for years and years, not models. Anyways, it just made me sad.
  19. I finished Madame Bovary and started The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce and I am enjoying it apart from the descriptions of the blisters on his feet. I am looking at a bunch of books on creative lettering and trying to expand my handwriting fonts. For homeschooling we are reading Sense and Sensibility and The Subtle Knife and enjoying them tremendously.
  20. I just finished Madame Bovary. It is not graphic at all, in fact, much less graphic than the average New York Times best seller or Pulitzer Prize winner of today which will contain at least one sex scene. There are no mentions of body parts and so much is left to the imagination. It is about adultery, yes. But in the end she is unhappy. quote name="bibiche" post="7999994" timestamp="1518233883"] I am just trying to form an idea for myself of what is correct. I'm trying to clarify my thoughts and balance this with my views on censorship. I mean, I'm thinking of how Lady Chatterley's Lover and Tropic of Cancer and Madame Bovary were banned as obscene with no redeeming value. I don't know much about porn - rather doubt there is great art there, although maybe I'm wrong - but I dislike the idea of gathering it all together and declaring it worthless and evil. Of course I think it would be best if children didn't view porn. But I think the program discussed in the article is probably a good way to deal with kids who have already been exposed to it. As far as sex education is concerned, I think Scandinavia has the right idea. (And it appears they also discuss porn once children reach a certain age.)
  21. In an ideal world they would find a way to remove all porn from they Internet and prosecute people who produce it. I know, I know. Not an easy task. But our children deserve it and the Internet is becoming their world in ways that it is hard for us to truly imagine. Wouldn't it be nice if it were a world that did not objectify and use women?
  22. So their alcohol was much less strong than ours today but I got the impression that that's what they drank all the time i.e.. every meal or to hydrate themselves, so they may have been getting more. But they were probably used to it and did not get drunk from it. Still, would it affect the fetus?
  23. I know in the middle ages people in Europe (and other places?) drank wine or mead instead of water because the water was often not safe to drink. I am wondering if there was a higher rate of FAS and other problems during the middle ages. I know infant mortality was very high back then but for other reasons. What do you think of pregnant women drinking wine in the middle ages?
  24. Can anyone recommend a book on this topic for high school level, or a general non-fiction book that is well-written, preferably one that my local library is likely to have?
