  1. Thanks! I know these threads get old but all of the information is still relevant and I appreciate your answers so much!
  2. I have read some about life of Fred and haven't looked at Beast Academy at all. I don't know the first thing about less standard curriculums and only chose Saxon because I know some about it and have also read good reviews that it is solid. I want to use something solid and I like the spiraling. I have heard good things about Teaching Textbooks, but have also heard that test scores aren't so great after using it.
  3. First, let me correct my error. 😜 She is a 6th grader, not a 7th grader. I've been working on curriculum and have 7th grade on my brain. We will be doing Algebra I in the 7th grade. And since that seems so young I just wonder if going slower would be better AND save some time each day. I'm afraid to only do the odds or evens for review. That's why I purchased the MFW plan. They say they've had a math teacher go through and reduce the number of problems selectively. She would rather read a hundred books and write ten essays than do math. She just loves reading and writing. She asks to write paragraphs on things. She loves vocabulary and spelling. She loves her latin class. Math is just uninteresting to her. She says everyday she's going to be a literature teacher.
  4. We are finishing up 8/7. She is a 7th grader. She dislikes math and dawdles. But, she gets the concepts easily, it just takes a long time to complete the review problems. She makes a lot of silly mistakes on those because she just wants to be done. I do make her correct them all. I just purchased MFW's lesson plan for Saxon. It has the students complete about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the problems. I am considering using it for Algebra I. I was also thinking of doing Algebra I and II over three years. This would make our math day shorter, we would be able to do ALL of the problems, and she would still be on track. Do you think there are drawbacks to doing it over 3 years?
  5. Charlotteb I am curious if you decided to two take three years for Algebra I and II. I am considering that now. Our math days are too long.
  6. We are finishing the year up and have done math 5 days a week with tests on the same days as a lesson. It was brutal some days. Made it seem like we did math all day. We began homeschooling mid year so that affected our pace. This fall we will begin Saxon 8/7 and I am scheduling 5 days but with tests and investigations having their own day. That'll be super short on test days since those don't take very long.
  7. We used it with the Veritas Press History Explorers to 1815 and 1815 to present. My daughter loves these books. She will be in sixth grade.
  8. My daughter will be in 6th. I have purchased some MP items and am considering the literature. Please tell me about the literature guides, whats in them, how long they take daily, weekly, etc. I am pretty sure I can get literature guides for the same books elsewhere but don't want to go down that road unless its absolutely necessary. Thanks
  9. I will be using it for grammar only. Pretty sure I am going with IEW for writing. I hope to finish the book in one year. We do school 5 days a week. Does 30 minutes sound like enough time to allot? Thanks
  10. My daugher is finishing up Saxon 7/6 in a few weeks. She had never used Saxon before this book. We took the online placement test and it was clear where she should start. I felt she was weak with decimals. She hadn't much work with them previously. This book has covered decimals and percents very well. I have read that 8/7 is a very good review of all math skills before Algebra. I read that it is better to do the 8/7 math than the pre-algebra book in Saxon: that the math skills should be solid and any bit of algebra will be introduced later. We will be doing 8/7 in the fall. I can't imagine it being a disaster. Saxon is solid and I have appreciated the continuous review of previous lessons. Here is a sample of their books. https://www.hmhco.com/~/media/sites/home/education/global/pdf/product-samples/mathematics/k-12/saxon-math-homeschool/sms_saxon_math_middle_sampler.pdf
  11. I am looking at Rod and Staff grammar 6 for my 6th grader next year. About how many minutes a day is a lesson? Thanks
  12. So we are 7 weeks into our homeschooling. We read Sentence Island as was recommended before we started Grammar Town. And have completed both of those. We've begun Sentence Island and have added Caesars English and Paragraph Town. At first it seemed like a lot of book/subjects. However, I have our lesson plan in excel and have scheduled the rest of the semester. We will complete nearly the entire course by the end of June or at least come close. We will do the poetry books over the summer. I absolutely LOVE the MCT Language Arts. My fifth grader has nailed down most of the grammar (those darn infinitives though) and absolutely loves all the discussion. We pretty much do all of our work verbally in the recliners beside the fire. It's just torcherous. LOL She does write in Practice Town but we go over it verbally. Although LA has been the most involved class and required a little more planning on my part, it has been the most rewarding. We are loving Fishmeal and Qweequack; they are hilarious. She loves to write and there hasn't been too much of that YET. She's looking forward to more involved assignments later on in the semester in Paragraph Town. I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your schedules and plans. I've looked at them numerous times and finally feel like I know what I am doing. I am pretty excited for next year!
  13. I wrote out a flow type chart of each of the guides that you all shared. It really helped me see how this is going to flow. And then I printed yours Bonnie. Thank you all so much for this great information. This is the one subject that had me feeling a little overwhelmed, especially since we are starting in the middle of a school year. I did look on the MCT site and see their chart. But it was too general and just didn't make sense to me. I need details. lol
  14. Thank you so much! I knew there was some overlap but didn't want to do too much.
  15. We are starting the Town Level (2) in January and are new to homeschooling. I LOVE everything I have read about this LA curriculum but I haven't been able to find anything that tells me how to go about using it other than recommendations we should read Grammar Town first. But then what? I saw on the rfwp website that Caesars English begins after Grammar Town. But what about Paragraph Town, Practice Town, and Building Poems? Anyone completed this level? I also ordered the trilogy Alice, Pete, and Mole.
