  1. It matters in FL in regards to sports. The FHSAA rules are something like using an umbrella school that issues a transcript/diploma and is registered with the state of FL makes you ineligible to play sports for public or private schools as a home schooler. But if you use FLVS it's okay, or if you use an umbrella school that is out of state you are still eligible to play. Something like that. The rules are in place to prevent recruiting, and keeping the playing field fair.
  2. [quote name="Wildcat" post="5104096" timestamp= I wanted one until my neighbor got one. They hated it from day one and wound up returning it just before the return window ended. They gave it their best shot. Between my neighbor's story, stories of others, and my own, I have been sufficiently cured of my 'expensive bed' thoughts and will go the 'old fashioned' route when we get a new one. I hated mine for the first week. It was hot, hard, and smelly. Then I googled and found out that it needs to be broken in-the pores of the foam need to open up. I walked up and down the mattress to help it along. Now I love it. Those issues are not a problem anymore.
  3. It's not on your list, but my daughter started playing volleyball at 11 years old. She played school season in the fall, then club season in the winter/spring. A year later she's pretty good. She hadn't played any other sports before that.
  4. Last year was our first year in CC Foundations and Essentials with my 6th and 4th graders. All we did for history at home was read SotW finishing 1 and then doing 2. We also did a lot of read alouds from TOG year 2 that I had bought prior to deciding to join CC. It may not seem like much history, but when I consider all the history they learned in Foundations, all the history and writing they did in Essentials, as well as all the presentations they did on history topics (this applies to science as well), I feel we had a really full year of history. We didn't get to much science during the year at home, but we are doing RS4K biology and hopefully chemistry over the summer. So now my older child is going into Challenge A this fall and I am going to continue with SoTW 3 and 4, along with the Betsy Maestro books on American history. I'll also add in more RS4K. I think we will have a great year. Paula
  5. We had a couple of 2 day volleyball tournaments in Orlando which is about an 1 1/2 hour away from us, and we always came up the night before the first day. We usually paid about $80 per night with the team discount. It was fun because many of my daughter's teammates and their families were in the same hotel and everybody considered it a fun weekend getaway.
  6. If they say space is limited I would believe them. Our community is already full for next year, and they are opening a new one in our town.
  7. We're about an hour south of Cocoa on the Atlantic coast and were given Tropical Storm warnings for Sunday-Monday. I'm glad it's not coming here since dh is out of town and didn't put the shutters up. Our generator is not working either. But we have food, water, and flashlights if needed. I used to think hurricanes were fun until we got hit by Frances and Jean back in 2004. I never want to do that again. Paula
  8. My husband is an AirTran captain and they have been ranked #1 in the Airline Quality rating for the last 2 years and in the top 2 for the last five years.
  9. Just thought of a couple more tips. Arrive early to the shows you want to see. At least 30 min. You can check the website for showtimes on the specific day you are going so you can plan out your day. Also, Pets Ahoy and Allure are indoor, AC, sit down shows, but arrive early for good seats!
  10. We have been to Sea World several times this summer and I highly recommend Shamu Rocks if you are there on a day that they are open till 10pm. We love sitting in the splash zone and we do get soaking wet with cold, salty water! We love it, but not everybody does! We also enjoy Sea Lions Tonight when they are open late, but the day time shows are great too. The night-time shows are just edgier. Have Fun!
  11. This is still very new to me. My daughter was recently diagnosed with ADD combined type with OCD tendencies. WISC IV 33 point spread. VCI the highest, WMI the lowest Subtests 9 point spread. Comprehension the highest, Digit span the lowest. Percentile Rankings VCI 95% PRI 75% WMI 27% PSI 42% FSIQ 73% Paula
  12. We just started using Saxon 65 with my 11 y/o dd who was very recently dx with ADD. We are only on lesson 12 or so, but I like how it's going so far. She really needs the incremental pace with lots of review.
  13. I used both. I started using TOG and SOTW at the same time, so I don't know what one is like without the other. I really liked how SOTW summed up the week for us. Are you using year 4? Is STOW not scheduled? It was in year 1. We didn't use the worksheets much either but still had a great year. Paula
  14. I know you said you cleaned everything, but look for a source. I had this problem before and discovered a bag of birdseed in my pantry that had been there a long time was the source. Threw it out, problem solved.
  15. I've stayed at Coronado Springs and enjoyed it much more than the Pop one we stayed at. Room was bigger at Coronado and it had a fridge. It had 2 pools one of which had a water slide. There was a bit of a hike to the main lobby and restaurants. Pop All-Star Movies was okay. The room was smaller but the pool is nice and close the the restaurant. I think they also showed a movie at night by the pool.
  16. I'm Paula and I have lurked here for a long time but don't post much. I originally started homeschooling because I thought it would be fun. I currently homeschool my 2 daughters, 9 and 11. I also have a son who just graduated from college and is looking for a job. I homeschooled him in 7th, 8th, and half of 9th grades.
  17. Well, after using Rightstart, Singapore, and Math Mammoth, I'm ready to give Saxon a try. Incremental, drill, and lots of review may be just what we need here. Paula
  18. During the last summer Olympiad, I remember seeing a clip about how Michel Phelps is built to swim because of his short legs, long arms, large paddle-like hands and large flipper-like feet(or something like that) so the body you are born with can definitely have a lot to do with an athletes natural ability. Paula
  19. We read this one by the same author that I found at our library http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-About-Sperm-Babies-Families/dp/0763600512/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b
  20. When I lived in Minnesota for 6 years, I noticed people saying "ish" as a stand alone for "yuck" or "ick". At least that's what I assumed they meant.
  21. I'm StormGold30822, awaiting first email. Paula
