My dd has taken Algebra 1, Geometry & Algebra 2 from Jann. Math is not my child's thing...the 2 day option was a much better fit for her. Plus, she needed the accountability class twice a week provided, vs. doing all schoolwork the night before the one/week class. Can't say enough positive things about Jann!!

DD did great on reading / writing, not great in math. She tested this year as a junior & last year as a sophomore. We were warned on the forum, that scores could actually go down...and hers did. Percentile ranking stayed the same. How can we use this info to choose SAT vs. ACT, and then, what prep do you use for SAT?

On a quest to make 11 yr old's progress more fun...she's doing Barton with a tutor (just had her first appt yesterday), just wondering if there is anything she'd perceive as fun that would help her also.

They said moderate to severe...must admit, I'm the overwhelmed, not quite sure what this all means phase. But, glad to have a point to begin again from, and guilt from all the times I've gotten frustrated & asked her things like, 'why can't you get this????' I've been skimming threads. We have an appt with a Barton tutor, as stated in many threads, expensive & sounds slow...3 yrs!! Would love best recommendations, a simple place to start.

My 5th grader is in school. We HS'd for 3 years & I was just failing her. She doesn't learn easily, hates reading, butt heads with me constantly, etc. ANYWAY, Now she's in 5th grade & is failing geography. Does anyone know of 'fun' type resources we could use at home, that would be drudgery after a day of school? And seriously, no learning comes easy to this child. She works SO HARD just to pass. Trying not to stress about how are we going to help you get through the next 7 years of school!!

If the credits are from a 4 year university, not community college, are they 'usually' accepted? Or same thing, check with the school. My older son, pre-med, just finished first year at university. Several of his AP's didn't transfer to his major. BUT...he said the AP's helped him so much with work load, made it easier to get through, so much was review. Even if they don't transfer in the way they expected, it was a big benefit to him. One more side note, they credits transferred somehow (in a way I haven't tried to figure out) that will give him upper classmen status, which is good (he says) for priority registration for classes. He should be a 'senior' for all but his first 3 semesters in college.

Does this mean the child receives high school AND college credit? My DD is taking a foreign language class this summer at the local university where she gets 5 college credits, equivalent of 1 semester, the 101 of the language. Would this meet 1 year of high school foreign language requirement? (for state regulation & college entrance). If she took the 102 level next summer, would it give her the 2 years needed?

We called one year & the next year we just waited. We received the paper notices mid-July the last 2 years. We had to have a credit card number to pay for getting the results by phone, seems like it was expensive enough that the next year, we just waited.

Jann in TX, http://www.myhomeschoolmathclass.com has been a lifesaver in our house. Worth every penny!! We too, tried Saxon Algebra, LOF Algebra, Teaching Textbooks Algebra...sigh... My dd still doesn't like math, but she can handle it with Jann.

My dd is straight A's...except for math. She has a/b in Algebra, and b/c in Geometry. 2/3rd of her classes are outside teachers/online classes. Taking Algebra 2 jr year (next year). We're wondering if it's worthwhile to re-take the geometry to pull it up. She HATES math. Hate to recommend that if it won't benefit much. Her cumulative through end of her sophomore year is 3.84. Thoughts?

AP Language & AP US History? Doable?

What curriculum are you using for US History & Lit? We're looking at: Apologia Advanced Biology Algebra 2 (with Jann in TX) AP Lang, hopefully with PA Homeschoolers Business Tech, SOS US History...still working on what, maybe AP with PA Homeschoolers, or MFW & Clep Internship with children's pastor at church 3-5 hours/week Piano

Do those of you who have had kids take the classes, was it worth it? The price tag seems so high, several people say 'you can do that on your own,' and honestly, NO I CAN'T. At least, not for AP Language or Lit. Possibly for US History, but I don't have any confidence with this being my first homeschooler in high school. She's been the guinea pig, and on some things, my choices weren't the best. Did your kids score well on the tests after taking the classes? She's a child who does well with deadlines given by others, always does her work, works hard...and wishes she didn't have to work so hard. I did some searches trying to find past discussions, not sure why I couldn't bring them up.

My son took 4 years of German, took the AP exam/scored well, awesome German teacher at his school. He ended up taking a 6 week trip there between jr & sr year. He calls the trip life changing. Honestly, the teacher made all the difference!! The kids all LOVE her. Son said while in Germany, the German kids made fun of their German, were more likely to speak English. My brother-in-law, years ago, also took several years of German (same teacher), did the 6 week trip twice, studied in Germany/Austria for a semester in college. We visited him there during college. Amazing place to visit! Culture, culture, culture!! Of course, we happened to hit a music festival, where choirs from all over with complete orchestras were playing in the streets of Vienna (Austria)...magical to say the least. My DD (now 16) is homeschooled. She's worked through 2 years of German on her own. No easy task. She's spending 6 weeks there this summer with the school my son went with. Bless that teacher for taking her!! Is it a practical language? Probably not. But, my impression of language in high school, it's the rare student who uses the language long term anyway.

It's so crazy. She was FINE taking the PSAT as a sophomore, doesn't seem to be dreading taking it in the fall, but when I mention signing her up for an AP class, her face turns to stone.

My soon to be 11th grader, adamantly does NOT want to take AP tests; I think the fear of failing/test anxiety. Any advice on how to overcome this? Trying to get her to see the true advantages of entering college with some credits. Does anyone think CLEP tests are less stressful?

Julie, I was a bit fearful of putting her into a college class situation. I do NOT want to set her up for failure in any way at this point. I do like the idea of MFW.

I don't think we have LD issues. Her brained isn't wired for math, whereas firstborn could always just LOOK at a math problem & know the answer. She's a straight A student, except math, & that's a B. I honestly feel like her math struggles are mainly my fault, as she was my first homeschooled child & I made poor choices for her; we've been working hard to correct those things. She's very much a stoic/hide her emotions kind of child.

MSU Northern is 5-1/2 hours away. I've not been able to find anything on the U of Montana, right here. We've heard they're introducing a community college type branch in the next year or so, but nothing has been made fully public yet.
