  1. My dog once acted unusually and it has always made me wonder what she was sensing at the time. She doesn't like thunderstorms and always wants to run down into the basement if the thunder is loud. Well, this one day the storm was particularly violent and she was FREAKING OUT! I opened the door to the basement expecting her to run down but she wouldn't go. So I coaxed her, even held onto her collar and tried pulling her to the door. She pulled backwards and there was NO WAY I was getting her into the basement. Literally 5 seconds later our house got struck by lightning. The bolt went through the gutter, into the plumbing pipes THROUGH THE BASEMENT, and exited out a basement window causing a hole in the window and a huge rut in the ground outside where it exited. She still runs downstairs during storms, so I've always wondered if she sensed something that one day.
  2. I've had many kidney stones. I don't believe the stone causes pain when it's in the kidney. What hurts is when it moves out of the kidney and then blocks the flow of the urine. You feel the pain in the kidney from the blocked urine. On occasion I've felt the stone moving along but, for me, that didn't hurt nearly as much as a blocked up kidney - which I've needed morphine drips on many occasions to take away the pain. But it has never hurt me to pass them.
  3. After 13 years of homeschooling I feel like I'm all done too. I can't even THINK about teaching another year of school. This isn't my usual end-of-the-year burn out. I know I'm all done. Private/public school is not an option so we're going to be using BJU DVD program. I'm really grateful to have this option. I'm so burnt out that I don't think I've cooked a meal in, oh, probably a month! LOL I decided to go to our local wholesale club and I bought a freezer full of prepared frozen meals. It's giving me the break I need.
  4. I'm 47 and my cycles went from in the 30's to in the 20's for about a year or so. Then my cycles went to 3 or 4 MONTHS long and then more recently back to 21 days again. Oh, and my hot flashes come and go whenever they feel like it too. I hate perimenopause.
  5. My ds is entering 5th grade and has excellent printing skills but cannot write or read cursive. We are starting BJU distance learning in the fall but I'm thinking I should get a lower grade (than 5th) for Handwriting. Is this is a good idea and which grade level would be good for him? (p.s. I believe BJU allows a move up or down by 2 grade levels)
  6. We will be using BJU's Distance Learning Program this September for the first time (5th grade). Can you tell me how you use this program? Tell me what you do to prepare for lessons, how you organize subjects and books for your student, if you use binders for worksheets, etc. I have no idea what to expect so any tips would be appreciated. :001_smile: Thanks!
  7. Since you mentioned that your dd is more interested in classical ballet, then perhaps a school that has classical ballet as their main focus will be the best fit for her. One thing you can try is to locate the nearest professional ballet company and check out their website. Many times there is a school affiliated with the company, or perhaps they could recommend a classical ballet school closest to your home. As for wearing tights... My almost 18-year-old is in a pre-professional ballet school and just said to me the other day, "I can't believe I wear tights every day of my life!" LOL It is a part of classical ballet that you can't get away from. But there are so many different brands - some softer than others. Maybe a different brand might feel better for her. My dd wears a hipstar style that comes below the waist. She hates the feeling of something tight around her waist.
  8. Games: Number Cruncher (by far my favorite!), Classic Simon, Sudoku, Klondike (Solitaire), Word Search, Traffic Jam, Dropwords, Slice It. My son's favorites to play on my phone are Raging Thunder 2 (car racing) and Doodle Jump. All these games are the FREE version except for Raging Thunder and Doodle Jump, I think. The app I use most is StopWatch & Timer. I'm always putting money in parking meters and have gotten ticketed for going over my time - even by 1 minute! Now I set my timer so I don't forget. Another good one is Zedge. Free ringtones and background pictures. If you're a walker/runner, Endomondo will track your distance and time. Lookout is a security app - protects your phone from malware, spyware. You can even find your phone if it is missing (using a computer). Lots of good features.
  9. Run your washing machine without adding any laundry to it and add a good splash of bleach to the water.
  10. This looks great! Thanks for the Rainbow Resource tip - I just ordered it! :001_smile:
  11. So glad you caught this early. My dd had Lyme disease and two doctors in our pediatrician office diagnosed the bulls eye rashes all over her body as hives. :001_huh: It took me taking her to a third doctor who didn't even wait for the results of the Lyme titer (which ended up being sky high) to start her on antibiotics. Does anyone know if taking probiotics along with antibiotics reduce the effect of the antibiotics? Always wondered this.
  12. I have a large dog who is in and out of the house so my dark wood floors get filthy. I use a regular mop and a half bucket of water with about a 1/4 cup of Mr. Clean Febreze Multi Surface Cleaner (the Lavender scent is wonderful). To really shine them up I'll use a flat mop with Bruce Hardwood Floor Cleaner Spray.
  13. LOL!!! This struck me funny. Why should I buy jeans only in the misses department if I'm a certain age? I'm 47 and buy clothes in the junior department because they fit! I cannot fit in anything in the misses department because I'm a junior size. In misses clothing, even the smallest size hangs off me because of the cut.
  14. I'm 47 and I just bought a new pair of skinny jeans. Oh, and I always shop in the Junior Department.
  15. Mary in VA, my dd was at PBT last summer also! It was her 2nd summer in a row. She LOVES PBT!
  16. For my 4th grader, I do not deduct points for misspelled words except during Spelling lessons only. In other subjects I will draw a line through misspelled words and rewrite the correct spelling above it. After we go over the correct spelling I then add that word to a spelling notebook that I use just for this purpose. Once a week we go through the notebook orally. Once I feel a word is mastered I cross it out. A teacher friend told me the reason she did not deduct points for misspelled words (other than spelling lessons) was because her students tended to use more interesting words in their writing if they were not afraid of getting points deducted for spelling.
  17. I read online that you can sprout quinoa and eat it raw, but I've never tried that before. Other than that, I've never heard of not heating quinoa. I wonder if you could simmer it for a shorter time and then take it off the heat, keeping it covered. You'd still be using heat but at least you wouldn't be boiling it the whole time. I use a fine mesh strainer to rinse it under cold running water.
  18. Here's how I make quinoa: Quinoa Salad 1 cup quinoa 1 cup dried cranberries 3/4 cup chopped scallions 3/4 cup chopped red pepper 3/4 cup slivered almonds 1/3 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper Put quinoa in a bowl and cover with cold water. Using your fingers, lightly rub the grains together to get the bitter saponin off and then drain and rinse using a mesh strainer. I usually repeat this. Add quinoa to 2 cups of lightly salted boiling water. Reduce heat and simmer until water is absorbed and quinoa is fluffy. Transfer quinoa to a large bowl to cool. Stir in cranberries, scallions, red pepper, almonds. In a small bowl, whisk lemon juice, olive oil, paprika, salt and pepper; pour over the quinoa salad and toss to coat. Refrigerate until chilled. (It tastes even better the next day.)
  19. I bought myself a new GPS with Lifetime Maps and Traffic for my Christmas present. But my favorite thing this Christmas morning was drinking Ghiradelli Chocolate Peppermint coffee and eating homemade chocolate hazelnut biscotti while watching my kids opening and enjoying their presents. Best feeling ever.
  20. I just saw rice makers in Target and was wondering what is the difference between using a rice maker and making rice on the stove top?
  21. I wish she could take a break from shaving and from using her deodorant/antiperspirant but she won't. I'm curious about the skin lightening product. I'll have to look in to that more. Diabetes does run on both sides of our family so I'll make sure she gets that checked next month at her physical.
  22. My dd has recently seen a dermatologist because she had a rash and discoloration on her underarms. The doc said it was from shaving and had her use Sana Balm medicated powder two times a day. It's been a month and the rash is pretty much gone but the discoloration is not. She is very fair and her underarm is very noticeably brownish. It wouldn't be much of a problem if she wasn't a ballet dancer who is always in a leotard with her arms exposed. I don't know why but I'm not totally convinced the discoloration is from shaving. Anyone ever have this problem? Remedies?
