  1. No one should taunt kids to the point of tears. She really is not fun at all. Hang the ice cream. Warn her someone will lash out at her next time this happens.
  2. "Aunt _______, I love you enough to stop you from embarrassing yourself further. You are wrong about what you believe about my day-to-day life. But if you think there is really a better school for me, please tell my parents about it right after you buy me some more ice cream."
  3. The lowliest misspelled evite is classier than gift registry information enclosed in the finest parchment.
  4. EOs that contain certain phenols do act on the cellular level if you mean 'Can it kill bacterial cells topically?' Yes they can. A quick search on pubmed will yield tons of results (e.g. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24292348). As is true with any antimicrobial, it matters which strain of bacteria you mean, how long it remain in contact, etc. 7th Generation Disinfectant Spray is basically diluted thymol. French hospitals during the plague used to burn rosemary branches to "cleanse the air." They had the right idea. Vicks' main component is synthetic camphor. Real camphor is certainly antimicrobial. The problem is that camphor is fairly toxic and is limited to 11% in any products now. As little as 0.7 - 1gram has been known to kill babies and toddlers who accidentally ingested it when it was left laying around in a vaporizer or as a pesticide. Topically, it is known as a rubefacient (same as Ben-Gay and Tiger Balm). Basically, it irritates tissue at a local level and sort of makes you feel something different -- for lungs it irritates lungs to the point of making them more sensitive to cold. It feels like therapy but in fact there are no anti-inflammatory effects imparted. In general, I associate EOs more with killing (bacteria, cancer cells, humans) than with healing.
  5. My mother would have been 95 today is her post that I remember best.
  6. ... Kalanamak died, and I miss her very much. My life and journey were enriched immeasurably for having befriended her in any sense. For any one who joined in the last year, Kalanamak, whose real name was Kay, was a medical doctor who lived a thousand interesting lives even before she started homeschooling. She posted frequently in spite of a demanding job at a hospital until she became quite ill and entered hospice. She was a rare and insanely bright light -- better described as a force of nature by her loved ones. It seems unlikely and too much to hope for to come across two such people in one lifetime.
  7. Something like little bags of stuff or unshelled nuts, I guess. The other snackable edibles we have are just too expensive to leave in something like that for fear of exposure to light and moisture. I would not put freeze dried anything in there, unless it were still in the bag.
  8. Normally I'd suggest a camp bed (self inflating mat) like the one made by REI but for a hotel, I would stack one or two air mattresses on top of each other. What's in the carpet seems grosser than anything in the great outdoors. Aerobed makes twin size air mattresses that come in a nice backpack.
  9. Ok, another one. The entire island of Guam. Long ago a friend told me he lived briefly on Guam as a child. Their house or bungalow had thick, tall inner partitions instead of walls that go all the way up. At night he could occasionally discern moving shadows of animals walking around up there. One night he is not sure if he imagined some furry thing brush past his cheek on the pillow just as he was drifting off to sleep. So I googled if Guam still has a rat or whatever mammal problem. Not exactly. It has a different sort of problem since 30 years ago. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/other/two-thousand-mice-dropped-guam-parachute-kill-snakes-f2D11685572
  10. The strangely slightly overdressed lady walking around busily at Home Depot with a clipboard who pauses near me and breathlessly asks, "Have you heard about what's going in here today?" She always wants to remodel your kitchen and wants to make a free appt for a HD consultant to come to your house. Now even when she's not there I'm afraid she'll be on me in a jiff and I have to mentally prepare my stock answer that I am overwhelmed with home repairs and cannot handle any more information. This makes me not able to quietly peruse light bulbs in a peaceful state of mind. Gosh I hope I'm not the only one who's ever seen her, b/c this would make me delusional.
  11. This matter is pretty simple for me. Trigger warning mandates are harmful. From the article: "They are stuck in a classroom where they can’t get out, or if they do try to leave, it is suddenly going to be very public.†Just no. Everybody needs to learn the survival skill of getting up and out of any situation that threatens you no matter how it is "rated" even if everyone else is sitting on their rears doing nothing. This should be instilled in children from a very young age
  12. Given that there are single dads, dads who are awarded full custody, dads who fight for full custody, just plain awesome dads, same sex male couples trying to adopt; I would say it is a stereotype.
  13. If you take them back yourself, you should prepare yourself to find there's no adult at home.
  14. Of the Coleman line, the only thing I might buy is of the Hooligan line because they have full rain flys. But in comparing full fly tents, I doubt Coleman would be my first choice *unless* I found it dirt cheap. This is where I differ from the other good tent enthusiasts. I am perfectly happy to entertain having several medium quality tents with full flys. (Very high end tents made by Hilleberg or geodesic tents easily approach $10,000. Then you'd have to worry about tent theft :001_unsure: so there is advantage in choosing cost over quality.) Basically here are the best and worst case scenarios for first time camping: BEST - you have a functional tent, the weather is not one bit rainy, and everyone comes home smiling with dirt on their faces. Many happy memories generated. Desire to go camping again declared by all. WORST - you have a functional tent but there is a surprise shower in the middle of the night and you did not have a full fly tent or you did not tie a tarp to trees overhead. You pack up in in the rain in the middle of the night because rain will soak through an unprotected tent surprisingly quickly and you huddle in the car all night until daybreak as you drive home. If you are super unlucky, other families will be awake in the morning to stare at "that family" who made alot of noise and ended up sleeping in their car. No good memories generated. First time camping experience negative. For us, I would not even consider a tent unless it had a full rainfly. Underneath the rainfly is a full mesh tent which is very nice for ventilation and star gazing on all those clear nights.
  15. It would take a long time to research all this, so here it goes: What non-sweet foods do truffles not work with? Not sure I've found one yet. Maybe celery? What things go well with cabbage and potatoes aside from bacon and onions? Creamy things? Acidic things? What do you do with tarragon? Is there any food that cries out for tarragon? Can you roast avocados (as in over campfire coals)? What happens to them? What sort of peaches are best for baking? What sort of potatoes are best for baking? The worst for baking? Thank you, collective wisdom!
  16. ! This is heartbreaking and it must be so hard to bear. I am so sorry.
  17. Only a few days every month do I both look and feel like a martyr. Aside from that even though we are not rich and fabulous I pretty much think we have it made. Sacrifice is less a part of my vocabulary than is efficiency.
  18. I presume the answer is Yes.
  19. I have no intention to age gracefully. At the very least, I intend to look and feel amongst the best in my age cohort (without plastic surgery). I think it has alot to do with less sun, more sleep.
  20. Why does the idea that you can't teach anything if you don't KNOW anything stun anyone? (I think I know who's certifiable alright ...) Imagine if I went to a gym that said I had to hang out there 7 hours/day, mostly putzing around, and then sent me home with more exercises to do at night. Can't they find a way to address all of my P.E. needs in under 9 hrs/day? If you cannot convince the people (dropouts) who would benefit the most from school to come back, I doubt you can convince the people who would benefit the least (happy homeschoolers). This magnificent failure to reengage dropouts is the subject of several fingerpointing papers by the governors of many states. Surely the educators must understand this problem: Where's the herculean educators' effort to reengage these lost souls? (I do believe that the next true wave in educational reform will have its Big Bang in successful (read: alternative) programs to reengage. And yes, I believe these alt programs will be privatized as they are starting to be now http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/education/sfps-releases-details-of-private-deal-for-dropout-program/article_2e592f71-d803-599e-8108-7925dacdabe1.html )
  21. I don't know how emancipation works but I know I would be heartbroken. I'm sorry.
  22. The NSA made the Reporters Without Borders(RWB) 2014 Enemies of the Internet list. Shouldn't the reasons for this notoriety lead to some sort of hostility or volatility? My question is When does hatred cease to be a societal shortcoming? Tea agents (of the Crown) were tarred and feathered yet this is now considered revolutionary.
  23. Do you also have to get over your fear of mice or rats? (serious question)
