  1. beka87 - TYSM!!!! That appears to be EXACTLY what I was looking for. I think that has solved the "klutzy" feeling I had about that part of his curriculum. Here's hoping this very "scientific" approach to language manages to get over my little STEM geek's objections to writing a proper sentence!
  2. I am first year homeschooling an 8th grader. History is probably his least favorite subject, though he has always done well at it. I don't get that, as I always did poorly in the subjects I disliked. That being said, what to do? I understand the importance of knowing and understanding history, but I am lost as to curriculum. He isn't fond of reading, so a traditional textbook would be a nightmare. I found IXL, and I think he would get through that format well, but I need something with some form of quizzes or tests to make certain he stays engaged and isn't just "surfing" across the material. Any suggestions?
  3. Aha!! Penelope, thank you for that info. I should have the book within a week, and hopefully I can get by without an additional manual. I will wait to look at before ordering anything else. I am trying to watch the budget, as I promised my husband I could do this affordably.
  4. You rock again!! I just picked up Foerster for $24.10 on Ebay, and will check out the mathwithoutborders site, hoping to save on the Solutions manual as I can't find that one used. Thank you so much. I am starting to feel much more in control. Of course, in 3 weeks I will see if I maintain that ..
  5. I am a first year home school person. My son is entering 8th grade, and did extremely well in pre-AP math last year, so would be taking Algebra I in school. I would like to teach him using a textbook/workbook type course. Or just a good textbook (with an answer key!) He plans to go into sciences, so I want to ensure that he has a very solid grounding in his math courses. Any recommendations as to a text that has clear explanations and sample problems? But is still a thorough and challenging program? I know I had some excellent texts way back when, and mostly taught myself math from them. Unfortunately, it has been so long, that I can't begin to remember which ones they were.
  6. Ooops - basic essential facts, yes he is entering 8th grade. This is why I was so perturbed by 5 sentence run ons with NO transitions. Latin, well, my darling mother made me take 2 years in high school, so I should be able to follow along, even though the main thing I remember is amo, amas, amat. Oh, and "Latin is a dead language, dead as dead can be, first it killed the Romans, and now it's killing me." I wasn't a fan, but it is valuable. SilverMoon - Thank you for the pointer on science. I will check that out, because he is definitely STEM. Plans to attend Texas A&M for some form of animal sciences, which is another reason for Latin/Greek elements introduction anyway. eagleynne and HomeAgain - Thank you for the pointers. I am wanting to go with a textbook/workbook setup, so I will go check those out!
  7. I am a "brand new" homeschool parent. I am pulling my son out because I realized while he aced his standardized test in math, his grammar and writing skills are barely at grade level. And this is having been in pre-AP! Of course, he always had homework in math, and guess who mostly taught him math . . Anyway, as language arts are not his love, I am not looking for a literature/comprehension focus this year. If I try to do too much, he'll hate it. So I am just going to have him read some every day and discuss what he has read with me. I want a fairly in depth grammar text which includes extensive diagramming (IMO, diagramming works well for the math geek brain). Parts of a sentence, punctuation, all that fun stuff. I also want to start him on Latin/Greek elements. Any suggestions?
