  1. Hey maybe you would like UHF starring Weird Al Yankovik. That's another bad cinema favorite around here!
  2. Now that dd is planning to take the SAT2 Lit test, how different is it from the CLEP Analyzing Lit exam? If similar enough she may as well get college credit. Thanks.
  3. He could just do some targeted practice on Khan Academy. Be sure to create an account so he can earn points & badges - it makes it more fun! Khan will make a student repeat a topic until they get it.
  4. When people ask what I do I tell them I eat bonbons all day.
  5. We used CLE for early grades but we got bogged down after about grade 4 - maybe too much writing/marking up sentences with too little room to write in the workbook. We switched to Abeka -- I wish I had used only Abeka for language arts. Some parts of CLE I love but prefer Abeka for LA.
  6. A memory foam mattress pad. I didn't fully appreciate how uncomfortable dorm beds were until I slept in my daughter's dorm one time.
  7. At this stage you are only trying to introduce your children to history. Later, when they revisit the topics they will remember bits and build on it. Please don't stress about it!
  8. Aww. Sorry you didn't like it. I saw it when it was first released - it is a weird movie but there are a lot of good memories associated with it from the movie and that time in my life. I love that Peter Weller is a rockstar/surgeon/scientist/crimefighter etc...and his cohorts are such an odd assorted crew.
  9. Since I was the third one in the family to come down with the flu, I was in a position to know it was the flu early on, and I took Tamiflu. It may have worked or not - it was still a miserable illness. No side effects.
  10. You'd like the movie. I wouldn't read too much into the line though.
  11. Got this on VHS for my teenager this Christmas :-)
  12. Yes. We like Rob - he's also very accessible if you have questions. He has an online study group.
  13. Not exactly second-guessing but I find it interesting how the perception of a college changes based on the scholarships that are offered.
  14. We are using the Modern History guide for HS - loved the book list. I do not plan on reading every book, for instance I think one book on the Holocaust is sufficient. There are other places we will skip since dd already read the books. The questions have led to some good discussions. Also BF customer service is wonderful. Highly recommended.
  15. I'm sorry. I have also been going through this with a dear one.
  16. She decided to take Japanese, English Lit, and Math1 (possibly Math 2 if we can get far enough in coursework).
  17. It's not that big of a difference. I would go with the school that is a better fit.
  18. Well if you do end up with both going there it would be best to have both of them gain residency. That way if grades are not sufficient to keep the full tuition scholarship the fallback position would be in-state tuition which is probably comparable to your own in-state tuition where you live. Maybe they were assuming kids with full tuition scholarships would keep that option open? If they both go there you could also save $$ on housing if they share an apartment. As a school they would probably love it. Good engineering program, fairly safe large city, much to do outdoors (hiking, skiing, climbing). If you want more info send me a pm.
  19. Univ of Utah is an excellent school. My dh went there for an advanced degree. Part of the reason the grad rates are low is due to part-time students -- adults working and taking one class at at a time. If you decide on that route I would talk to the school about the residency requirements and be very clear about what you need to do. It does sound like a good deal if you can meet the requirements. It would be the better of the two scholarship deals, especially if your son ends up going more than 4 years. There is a huge gap between in-state and out of state tuition. eta: I was not aware of Univ of Utah offering this type of residency deal. I thought Utah State did though. We're talking about the university in Salt Lake City, right?
  20. Aside from math, which SAT2 tests did your dc take? Any feedback appreciated. Easier is better, as all of the SAT2's are distasteful. We just realized dd will only have one opportunity to take Japanese with listening and she'd like to pick a third test in case her Japanese scores aren't high enough. I think it's rotten that they only offer Japanese once a year, and official prep materials are almost nonexistent.
  21. I would also be hesitant to go with either of these offers, especially the one with the 3.6 gpa requirement and you are talking about engineering. So many students get off to a rough start, and sometimes an engineering student is *thankful* to get a B! That kind of pressure would be awful...college is stressful enough without that.
  22. I would not read it -- it has been a long time but I remember disliking that book. ETA: I loved Because of Winn-Dixie. Read that instead.
  23. Had to laugh at the term "decent" used with "bra"...because so many do not fall into that category, including most that I own and wear. Good cup of coffee Hot meal Comfortable Shoes Decent Bra Is it too much to ask?
  24. Loved that show, esp. John Candy!
