Update on My dd...Second month of VT 2x/wk
NCJessieRN replied to NCJessieRN's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
I forgot to mention my daughter is almost 8 and in second grade.:001_smile: -
We are going into the second month of VT 2x per week and the difference in my dd's ability is almost miraculous! Before we started, she was evaluated and diagnosed by a neuro psych and found to have dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia as well as low working memory. We then had her evaluated by a covd.org Dr. who found multi. vision issues (her vision is 20/20) and recommended VT. She started the next week and it has been almost 2 months going twice weekly. Prior my dd was on a K-early 1st grade reading level. Now she is reading at and slightly above grade level! Her writing has also improved greatly with few to no reversals! Another thing we noticed was my dd never liked to play wii with her brother on the weekends b/c it was too difficult for her. This past weekend she played with him and was actually good! She has also mastered left and right which was a big deal for us too! We are still continuing with an OG reading program but just wanted to share the improvements we've already experience. Her therapist were even surprised at her progress. This board has been so helpful during this process and is really the only way I found out about the covd.org website!

Anyone use Reading Horizons Online?
NCJessieRN replied to NCJessieRN's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you! It does look great for my dyslexic dd. I've had a hard time find reviews or anyone who has used it so thanks!:) -
I'm looking for any reviews. About a month ago we started level 1 of Barton Reading program but I saw someone on another group mention this program as being similar to Barton and would be way less expensive to go through. Thanks, Jessica

More confused than ever (dyslexia/ vision therapy)
NCJessieRN replied to NCJessieRN's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Thanks OhElizabeth! Yep. This part is helpful. I actually started reading The Dyslexic Advantage a week ago and so far, find it fascinating and informative. I'm only on the "I" section but it's a great read.:001_smile: -
More confused than ever (dyslexia/ vision therapy)

Thank you all for your helpful responses. It looks like it can't hurt only help. We are definitely committed to the first two months to see what improvements we see. Visual issues? I can't remember all of the terms they used but I know they mentioned issues with tracking, one eye going out when something is too close, focusing problem and a depth perception issue. Other issues? Reading-skipping words, changing phonogram order, reading saw as was there as three etc. Writing- many reversals, writing entire words backward, hard time staying on a line. Spelling-can not spell even easy words. If you say ship she may spell hsip even though she know the phonogram sh Math-very difficult. Can't do simple math without a number line if 5+2 is on a page 5 times, she will need the number line each time. -
We got the results of my daughter's eval which showed she has dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia as well as slow processing speed and low working memory. I ordered and have begun with the Barton Reading System. On Monday, I took her for to a covd dr for an eval. They said she has a lot of visual problems (I can't remember exact names and I don't have the full report) and I had to meet with the vision therapist today to discuss and she needed further testing with the therapist. By the end, they recommended 8 months of VT 2xs a week and said that the "dyslexia" should dissolve.? She said most people do not have true dyslexia but have visual problems that can be corrected. Is this what others of you have experienced? We are starting the therapy next week in hopes that it does work. She said we should see definite improvement in the first two months. Thanks for any insight!

No but that's a good idea. Thanks. I feel brain dead with this pregnancy so I could not even think of something that simple!

Today we started WWE 2. So, day 1 is a narration. It says, "Can you tell me in one or two sentences what happened in this story?"...(three BRIEF sentences are also acceptable) Here is what my ds wrote: There was an owl who was sleeping. The naughty grasshopper was chirping during the day and woke up the owl from her daytime sleep. She told the grasshopper to stop but he got louder. She wanted to punish the grasshopper but she could not see him. She offered the grasshopper some wine. The owl ate the grasshopper. He was not able to make it shorter and I'm not sure how to coach him in doing so. Any thoughts or advice? Thank you!

His sister. She is a single mom. When speaking with her further, she is absolutely clueless. She didn't see asking my dh for $ as the same thing as asking me for $. We are married and we only have OUR money! He made it clear and I really think she had a lightbulb moment (at least that's what I'm going to believe).

No larger gifts. Mostly clothes, which I had TONS of! My BFF had a baby girl last winter as did my cousin and both passes on all of their girl clothes b/c they are done having babies. My sil already knew we didn't need anything. She comes over every week and has seen the amount of stuff we have. I don't want to sound ungrateful though to those who came! I did have fun and am thankful but the whole thing now just leaves a bad taste in my mouth IYKWIM!
