  1. Perhaps having child circle consonant ("l" in family) or vowel (vowel team of "ay") before letter y will help reinforce the changes. I agree, it makes sense to work on one concept and then add a new concept later (even if a few minutes later).
  2. I'm the type who likes planning. However, I don't currently plan. I tried planning for kindergarten, but that faded away. I wing it each day, and, despite this, we seem to stay afloat because we have one child (age 6.5), study early elementary subjects, and generally ignore other topics (history, literary analysis, and writing process). We try to study 30 minutes each day, but we will try to increase that to one hour. So here's our random learning which is not planned on paper (I only make mental note/plan): Writing - word patterns in cursive (son yearned to learn cursive at age 5; at age 4, because I neglected to introduce early phonics, he was memorizing too many car names and words from seeing "whole language," so we worked through a little AlphaPhonics, and we have maintained it with advanced phonics, prefix/suffix, syllables, word origins, etc.) Reading - decode New Yorker articles, Constitution, etc. Mortensen Math - random (addition, multiplication, algebra, fraction, etc.) Chemistry coloring workbook - electrons, ions, etc. Anatomy coloring book Other - piano, swimming, other sports We cover one or a few subjects each day, and that's how I wing it, concentrating on math and writing. I need to include more play labs for pH acid/base study, Lego simple machines, etc. I'm sure that I'll plan as our child gets older.
  3. I read about the importance of writing, how such fine motor skills improve our memory.
  4. I don't plan any lessons. I wing it each day.
  5. Sorry, I don't know how to use the quote feature, so I'll respond without quotes. I also edited the post to focus on key areas. I suppose the purchases fulfill a need for things and provide a sense of excitement. There is a family habit component about keeping things - somewhat obsessive compulsive. It's difficult to homeschool with clutter. I have been reducing some clutter slowly.
  6. Is anyone else dealing with this?
  7. Thanks for the suggestions which really help me to figure out future science plans!
  8. Many thanks to all! The recommendations help tremendously!
  9. What science lab equipment have you acquired for homeschool science (high school level) - for physics, chemistry, and biology? Do you perform some experiments outside where it's open and ventilated? I would love to know what equipment you use - especially for physics. We are not currently at high school level, but I am trying to plan for future science labs.

  11. We sometimes use a Chromebook at the dining table. For art, I cover the floor or outside deck with clear plastic to catch paint drips. Whatever works.
  12. I feel your pain. We only have one child. Books stack up to the ceiling in shelves. It's overwhelming. I decided to toss a subject overboard to lighten our load, so I sacrificed history. Why did I do this? It's easy to find free history materials online without having to store stockpiles of books which consume walking space. I'm still weeding through materials. The photos of organizational methods help. I'm drowning in books. I hope that we don't have an earthquake. Best of luck to you.
  13. I have been reading posts from this forum, but this is the first time that I have posted. If anyone is searching for a math program, I just wanted to share this. I started with RightStart and Singapore Math. Later, by accident, I discovered Mortensen Math which is more tangible and fun, covering many math operations simultaneously. I hope that this review helps others in choosing a math program.
