  1. Good Morning All, She is done with school minus her writing page. Daddy will work with her on it. We have Homeschool Co-Op this morning. Dr. appointment this afternoon. Library to return a lot of stuff. Pick up new stuff. Laundry mat
  2. My 6 yr old wanted to do cursive (she's artsy and thinks it pretty). She doesn't slant her letters because she doesn't want too. She likes it straight up. I was taught to slant my letters but I have also come across handwriting curriculum that doesn't slant. I don't care as long as it's looks nice and her letters look like those letters on the page. Slanted or not is a preferance.
  3. Finally Daddy has a day off. He has been doing a lot of overtime. While he slept in I did Bible, phonics and math with her. They built dinosaurs freestyle with Legos, drawing pictures and penmanship, so far. Currently they are watching an animated version of the Boxcar Children. (She loves that book series). She will read some dinosaur stories to Daddy and he will read some to her. Dinosaur puzzle and maybe go to the Natural History Museum. Then make frosted sugar cookies together. Mommy gets to clean.
  4. Good Morning, So far Bible and phonics are done. She is working on her math now. Then penmanship, spelling and she reads to me. She will get an audiobook while she cleans her room. Then we will buddy read a chapter book.
  5. Beast Academy is good my daughter just started it and she enjoys it. The have sample pages online and the website is really informative. www.beastacademy.com The concept is taught in comic book style and then they have the practice book to work the problems.
  6. Today we did bible, phonics review, review alphabet fluency both manuscript and cursive, Beast Academy math, penmanship and she read to me. Her and I attended a potluck lunch then picked Dad up who was working overtime. Then visited a friend. DD6 and Daddy are hanging out while I'm at the laundry mat. Family time then bed. She is enjoying her new math program and she says it's better then the last one and not as easy but not hard.
  7. Its 94 degrees here. I miss the pools. School starts officially tomorrow. She has Bible, phonics, reading, math, read alouds and penmanship. We are doing a unit study this week on dinosaurs and current reptiles. So a lot of her stuff is related to it. It will end with a visit to our Natural History Museum. This week also starts her homeschool co-op on Thursday.
  8. Mine loves to ask questions too. So many questions. Sometimes she isnt happy with the answer unless it comes from the dictionary. Today she asked me what a word meant and I told her. Later we were at a pool and she asked me about the same word. I asked if she remembered what I told her earlier. She said yes. I asked why did she ask again. She said, "well, I never asked you that question here." What? (I roll my eyes).
  9. My DD is almost 7. She loves anything science or art related. It isn't work to her its play. She is very good at math but will tell you she doesnt like it, having to sit down with paper and pencil. She will do math problems all day, orally, on her own. She would rather play then do school. She is a physically active outdoor type so sitting to do something isn't fun for her unless it's part of her play. She needs to learn, though, that not everything is fun and games. Some-things are hard work. Being so young, plus an only child, she gets a lot of free play. Which is important.
  10. My 6 yr old loved My Father's Dragon trilogy, Mr. Popper's Penguins, The Boxcar Children (there are 19 books from original author and more then 100 based on the originals). Her favorite is Uncle Wiggley, it can be silly.
  11. Yesterday was Daddy/Daughter Day and they went to storytime at the library, Natural History Museum and our local museum about our city. They went to a music store to check on either a small guitar or ukulele for her. They prepared and delivered a meal to a shut-in and she read to them and kept them company while they ate. Then they came home and painted together. It ended with a daddy/daughter devotion. It was a fun day. Today Bible stories plus devotional, phonics review, she was read to, she read to us, she practiced the states, calendar, reviewed days/months/year and emergency information. Tonight is first day back to Bible Club and now she gets to go to a class which is 1st-3rd grade girls. She is excited. Adult Bible study is also tonight.
  12. My DD6 will do it in her head or fingers also, she doesnt use manipulatives often. We used Horizon K for Kindy but changed to Beast Academy because she needs more in depth type of program. We are also mixing in Ray's Arithmetic 2 book this year to do just orally. She can write fine but likes to play with numbers in her head. If she doesn't need the manipulatives and can easily do the problems just forget about them and find a program that works for her.
  13. Hello All, We don't start DD6 1st grade year till mid September. We do summer school lite right now. This week she is practicing cursive and doing phonics review, she reads to us and we read to her. Her new math book comes this week. She won't start this till September unless she asked to do it early.
  14. How does he feel about it? Does he feel it's too much? Does he have more writing to do in other subjects? I plan on using the 1st grade literature guides and have my dd do the writing. (I've seen the sample of the lessons). If I need to break it up overtime then I will. Writing is frustrating for her but on days she will do the Lit. Guide she will have no other writing that day. Maybe breaking up the writing so it's not all at once might help him.
  15. Only one kid here and she is only 6 so if she feels good enough to play then she can do school work. If she starts to spiraling and melting down we will modify depending on what she can handle. If she is lethargic she goes to doctor and will rest with audiobooks or cuddles and being read too and/or let her watch her science and nature show. If all of us are sick like last winter with the flu none of us did anything. If Mom or Dad is sick she still has school.
  16. Did he want to homeschool or was he happy at school?
  17. Stuffy nose try a warm mist humidifier.
  18. For my only dc and upcoming 1st grader we do a co-op that meets once, every other week, September-May. I do wish it met more often. We do it with her because she is super social and needs to be around others. Its also good for her to learn from other adults. Her classes mix 1st-3rd grade kids, so it's not just same age group. They also have P.E so she gets to play with others in a playground setting, when weather permits. She does have park day several days a week so there's that too, for play. We live a city, in apartments so no yard.
  19. Lawrence here and we are okay. Thank God! Many friends and family were in its path but are safe. Praying for our friends in Linwood which was hard hit. Finally got my daughter to sleep about 20 minutes ago. She was worried about her friends in Linwood and about another tornado coming. She packed up some of her precious things and has them ready just in case. I'm tired but to wound up to sleep.
  20. Is she asking you to stop or does she want to continue? My DD wanted to learn early but then she had enough and wanted to stop for awhile. We would put it away for a few months then she would want to do it again. This went on for awhile. My kid would sometimes switch words or miss one because she was distracted or bored. She 6.5 and still does (mostly because she is distracted by the pictures). Fluency comes in time and with practice.
  21. Thank you, Knitgrl! I will look into it.
  22. Lord willing we will be doing the following. Phonics/reading/spelling- Explode the code online, Noah Webster Reading and Spelling and all the library books she can read. Read Alouds- from the library, TBD. Math- Beast Academy 2A if it goes well we will continue with (B-D). She will be doing this with Daddy. Writing- will continue with cursive but change to Logic of English cursive program instead of Abeka. Science- lot of science kits from Young Scientists website. Read books, watch videos and fields trips to explore. History & Geography- 50 states plus capitals, map reading, the presidents and learning more about our city, state and our country. Maybe SOTW or Mystery of History.? Bible- Daily Devotional, Bible stories, memory verses, What's in the Bible with Buck Denver DVDs and other moral centered DVDs and storybooks. PE- bike riding, play at the park, roller skating, swimming and other outside play (when weather permits). Recreational Center activities, indoor pool and an indoor activities place. (For times when it's too cold or stormy). Homeschool Co-Op I would like get her into music lessons and art lessons. Daddy has gotten her intro to drawing books and is helping where he can there but I think she would enjoy more.
  23. Good Morning All, Welcome back SJ! So far she has done phonics. Need to do Bible story, devotional, memory verse, writing page, math, her read and Mommy reads.
