  1. Well, in my state, we don't legally have to register her for school till she is 7. Which is the compulsory age here. If, for some reason, she has to go to public or private she can't legally start kindergarten till 2018-2019 and 1st grade till 2019-2020, per state law. I have been doing some school like things with her. Just not formally or consistently. She can read short vowel cvc and cvcc words, some long vowel ones and some others. She reads Bob books and working on McGuffey primer. A couple minutes a day. She picks up concept really fast, especially number related. Developmentally, she isn't ready for formal writing nor is she that interested. She is a very active and physical (4yr old) kid who would rather play all day with other kids. She isn't ready for hardcore formal schooling or sit down work. I'm really conflicted. She wants to know and understand everything.
  2. My kid loves a show on YouTube called Alphablocks. It's phonics based out of the UK. It teaches letter sounds plus what happens when letters come together to make words.
  3. I'm torn between wanting to do formal education with my 4yr old vs. just letting her be little and play all day and have fun. Right now she's reading Bob Books and McGuffey Revised Primer. Takes just a few minutes a day. Alphablocks on YouTube. She loves them. Review counting (1-1 and skip) every once in awhile. Add/sub to 10. Occasionally, only orally. Let her play with sidewalk chalk and the white board to write if she wants. I or her Dad read to her everyday. Lots and lots of read alouds.
  4. Our Summer Reading Program is good. Last year it was read 6 books (kids) and they would get a t-shirt, Pizza Hut coupon for free personal pan pizza and a prize from their cabinet. Plus they would have a bingo game when they could win prizes. This year there still is the bingo and they can still get the 3 things for the first 6 books read. The only change is they will get a prize for every 6 books read until the prizes run out. I would have cleaned them out last year if that was in play. I read to my daughter a lot. This year though she is reading so the amount of prizes is up to her.
  5. I am currently using a lot of different things. YouTube has been very helpful with the alphabet and the different sounds the letters make, using music. Which my daughter loves. They also have a program from the UK called Alphablocks that teach the kids phonics. I highly recommend that program. The episode are short but fun. I've had my daughter go through Blend Phonics PrePrimer and Alphabet Fluency by Donald Potter. I had to write the words on cards or white board. She doesn't like all those pages of words. I am currently trying to get her to do Phonics Pathways but she tells me she doesn't want too. She is young so she just might need more time or she might need a different approach. The summer reading program at our library got her really going on those Bob Books. They would give her a prize for every 6 books she read. She has read more then 30 so far. I also have her going through the McGuffey Revised Primer.
