  1. Hello, I've been asked to teach some small co-op math classes next year. This year I'm teaching Geometry (Jacobs) and in the past have taught Algebra 1 (Holt). I love the Jacob's Geometry. The Holt, it's pages are busy but it has some good points, too. Ages ago I used Foerster with my son for Algebra I and II but I hardly remember it and the books are not in my personal library any more. I'm looking for text recommendations for Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Algebra II, and Pre-Calc/Trig. I had originally thought to use Jacob's Algebra I since I like the Geometry so much, but now I'm wondering whether consistency in all the classes (except geometry) would be a better idea and if so, what text? I did get my hands on some Lial's (how do you pronounce that, by the way?) but only the Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Pre-Calculus with Limits, not the Pre-Algebra. They were $4 per book so I'm not heavily invested here, they mostly quite old. I haven't had a chance to evaluate them yet. If I do use Jacobs for both Algebra I and Geometry, what do you think would be a good Pre-Algebra, Algebra II, and Pre-cal? Do you think consistency is important? Thank you for your input, I really appreciate your experience and your comments. Sandra p.s. I'm sure my sig line is very out of date.
  2. Dd and I will be traveling for a couple weeks this summer and without laundry facilities. I’d like to get her 2 or 3 pairs of pants that are quick drying fabric so we can rinse them out at night and have them be dry in the morning. The problem is she doesn’t like the styles of anything I can find. She would, ideally, like some pants that look like or are at least cut like jeans. Any ideas?
  3. Somewhere i heard that ice cream craving can actually be thirst, misinterpreted. Perhaps you need to drink some water or Gatorade? It’s worth a try.
  4. Thank you for your suggestions. He was first dx ADHD in First Grade. The meds weren't terribly effective. In fact that is what brought us to homeschooling him. We have retried old meds and tried new ones a few times over the years. He has always hated the way they make him feel. Can Asperger's be something that kids grow into? Our last eval was through a University PhD program. I'm not thinking it was worth the discounted price that we paid. I've gotten some req's for help for him, but have to wait until everyone is back at work tomorrow to see how difficult it will be to get in. Thank you again. I'm still welcoming ideas if you have any positive ones to add. YogaBlock
  5. Please, don't quote. I'm reeling right now and not sure where all this is going. I have created a new account to, I hope, keep this relatively anonymous. I will probably delete this later. No blame, please. He was a good liar and spent a ton of energy fooling us. With the older kids our trust was always well placed. DS has been carrying on a charade for two years that he is doing well in CC. He even went so far as to pretend to apply to 4 year colleges and get accepted. We visited campuses. He went to orientation. He has faked a LOT of stuff. He finally came clean yesterday. I'm not interested in punishment. The natural consequences are sufficient. Given the larger picture it is clear to me that we have mental health issues here. Gaming addiction is admitted. Depression is admitted. Social skills with peers are lacking. Friends are almost nonexistent. Difficulty learning anything online such as homework for classes is a problem - separate from the gaming addiction. The one class with NO online stuff, and he liked it, he got an A. The only A. There were no B's and few C's. ADHD has been previously dx, but the last evaluation (4 years ago) found him barely ADHD. Could they have missed further LD's? Would they have noted if there were Asperger tendencies? What sort of therapies do you think could help? He needs a psychiatrist for meds, a counselor for the emotional stuff and something for the LD's which have apparently been hiding. Would CBT be good? What about a program like LearningRx? I don't know if we should have him continue to take a couple cc classes but with very close supervision and maybe some accommodations, get a year round job (has summer job), school at home to remediate some subjects and explore interests? I'm only interested in positive suggestions and comments. Prayers welcome.
