Does anyone have any insight, suggestions, etc., on how French levels translate to high school classes, including AP? Kiddo is starting high school next year, was in a bilingual environment for years but lost some of his French when we left. Since then, he has taken weekly classes with our local Alliance Francais and is currently in an advanced class for preparation for the DELF for level B1 (which he won't take until next year at the earliest as he just transferred into that class but that is about his level). Just wondering if anyone would have any insight or suggestions at what level he would go into. I am sure they will test but he doesn't always test well. He is much stronger in speaking then reading and writing but I have no idea what they do in high school anymore. Just wondering what we should be looking at. PS regardless of his placement, he will stay in the AF classes, they are taught by native French speakers and he enjoys the classes.

Bonjour! My son is a semi-reluctant reader even in his native language of English. We have found though that he devours graphic novels (in English) and that has translated to willingness to read other books. I am wondering now if I can find some graphic novels for elementary age in French that he may enjoy but not speaking French myself its a bit of a challenge. Can anyone recommend any for that age group? Thanks in advance!

Hello wise minds. DS is in CM2 in a French (bilingual) school, little behind grade level in French (equivalent of 5th grade) but he can speak it and read it at a pretty decent level.. For a variety of reasons we are moving to a homeschool charter (blended HS and in seat) but will no longer have French. Mom and dad speak no French and we will be pretty far from his old classmates etc. Any idea best way to try to keep up enough French between now and high school? He is beyond the level for Duolingo but not quite at the level to independently navigate French sites. Thanks in advance

Not really help here, my son is learning in both English and French. He does not have dyslexia but has dyslectic traits, whatever that means. We are working on reading in English with a few programs and recently found similar (hopefully) programs to help with reading in French. When he was evaluated, the psych suggested we pull him out of bilingual school because of it but we have not given up.

Following! I would be interested in this also but for a younger (9yo) child Especially anything science or animals in nature (ie similar to kids national geographic)

We have an online computer app we are going to start for English but, given all the educational apps available for the iPad, there has to be some basic learning apps for French. I am not looking for Duolingo type vocab but more reading comprehension or grammar or basic language arts in French. I do NOT speak French and can only read basic level so while I see several apps, I have no ideas what might be good. Any one have any suggestions?

As a quick app, I would try Duolingo, won't get fluency but can be fun, we are using it to reinforce basics. My son attends a French Immersion school and will also be in Fourth Grade next year. Our school does a lot of tutoring and one on one help which is great. Assuming that immersion schools are similar (ours is about 50/50 French and English and he does history and science etc in French as well as English) the big challenge in 4th grade is instead of "learning to read" a child is "reading to learn". We have already been forewarned that next year will be more challenging for my son as he struggles with reading (in both languages). Therefore, my recommendation would be to focus on reading in Spanish as much as speaking and listening to it. IMHO. Good luck!

He did pass the Barton screening, we haven't started yet as we are waiting for school to finish -- and watch apparently a very long DVD for parents LOL. Thanks for the suggestion on shorter lessons, I doubt he has the attention for longer ones so we were going to try shorter lessons but more frequently and see how he does. And yes, the eval suggested that we re-think him doing 2 languages, and we very well may in the future, but he is at a small school where he (and most of his classmates) has been since age 2 --he's now 8.5 and does NOT want to leave his second home. We are worried that would be more traumatic for him right now. We are going to work this summer with him and hope to have some help next year and take it bit by bit.

We recently had him re-tested and they suggested a language based learning disability with components of dyslexia which is why the OG system was recommended for English. We are going to do intense work with the Barton system this summer but also want to work with him with French. He is gifted but apparently severe ADHD so I am not 100% in agreement with the tests (as I think he was intentionally under performing in some issues)

We have been recommended several home Orton-Gillngham programs for English and I found this one for French. it says "I can teach myself French" but I am not sure about that, I can read basic French but I am not a native speaker so cannot pronounce. Just wondering if anyone has used this or a similar program to help teach French reading? Thanks in advance. Amy
