I know there are so many posts about accreditation and they've been very helpful.  We were going the unaccredited route (why should I pay someone a lot of money to keep track of something that I could do on my own)....until we started looking into colleges with my dd who is finishing her junior year of high school.  I have found that the private colleges do not have any problems with a homeschooled student with an unaccredited transcript.  But the public colleges (University of Georgia and Auburn) look at me funny when I ask the admissions about unaccredited transcripts.

     

    I'm not worried about her getting accepted.  She would like to apply to the Honors program and I would like her to look as competitive as possible for this as well as any scholarship opportunities.

     

    Anyone have experience with applying to universities with an unaccredited transcript?  Or if you have gone the accredited route, how do the admissions people know if your curriculum is rigorous if you've never taken classes with the "umbrella school" you're accrediting with but it shows up on your transcript?

     

    Trying to decide what to do!

  3. Student Text A & B - These have just the answers for both student and teaching problems (Try It!) in the back of the book.

     

    Teacher Guides A & B - These are really mostly Solutions Guides - there's a sample schedule which I didn't find terribly useful at all, but no teaching hints or ideas like in the HiGs or Primary TGs. They have full solutions for all the student problems in the text, as well as the teaching problems (Try It!), and additionally answers to the Class Activities.

     

    Workbook - These are like the analogue to the Intensive Practice books for Primary Math. Not necessary, but the questions are taken up a notch (or maybe two or three). The workbook problems also integrate review and application of previous concepts in a way that the textbook questions don't necessarily. The workbook also has optional Midterm and Final exams for the program. Answers only are in the back.

     

    Workbook TE - This has the solutions to the workbook questions. I did not buy it, because I couldn't see spending $30 on the thing, especially as it only became available when we'd already worked partway through the book already, but it's kinda nuts that I have all the solutions to the more straightforward text questions, and have to scratch my head and work through things myself sometimes to figure out what's going on with these. In retrospect, it's probably worth it.

     

    Test Bank - If you want to give tests (and I decided to this year, as I wanted to give them practice studying for and taking tests), this is a nice resource. Lots of questions, assigned Low, Medium, or High difficulty for each chapter. You can pick and choose which ones you'd like to make a test up with. Full solutions are included in the text.

     

    It's too bad they didn't include the answers with the workbook (without having to spend another $30!). And I looked at a sample of the Test Bank - it's a shame they include the answers right with the problems so you have to copy your own test. Don't they know we're busy homeschool moms that don't have time to copy math problems for a test? :tongue_smilie:

  4. We started using CE2 for my 6th grader this year. My dd came up with her own game called "Weekly Word Nut" where she picks a vocabulary word and uses it all week in her writing (school and non-school related) and conversation. Last week, her word was "ostentatious" and I doubt our family will forget what that word means b/c it was used so often. I realize it's only one new word a week, but I thought it was a clever idea.

  5. Hello-

    I'm researching the MCT Language Arts curriculum for my 6th grader and came across the "Self-Evident Truth Series" which are studies of famous speeches in history (Declaration of Independence, Gettysburg Address...). It looked interesting so I read on and discovered that the most recent speech added was Barack Obama's speech on race that basically puts his speech on up there with Abe Lincoln's and Jefferson's. Not that I'm afraid to analyze speeches and learn about them, I am afraid of the potential slant a curriclum's author might put on something so recently spoken.

     

    This may be a hot topic, but I'm concerned with the political view that the MCT curriculum may reflect. Granted, I probably would not purchase the Obama speech (at least for a 6th grader), but am I being overly paranoid about this? Has anyone else used the other speech books?

  6. My 3rd grade dd is using WWE and FLL3 but I feel she needs some extra practice with the grammar exercises. I'm looking for something she can do on her own that supplements what we do in FLL together (such as diagramming sentences or labelling parts of speech, etc.).

     

    Any suggestions? There's a lot out there!
