  1. No advice, but I know from personal experience how hard job/moving stuff is so. . . . . :grouphug:
  2. I usually bring my piano students to nursing homes in the spring, and we prepare a collection of hymns and patriotic songs. The residents love songs from the different military branches (Anchors Away, The Caissons, Marine's Hymn); America the Beautiful; You're a Grand Old Flag, etc. They sing along - very fun! This may not be what you're looking for, but throwing it out there.
  3. This whole post is super helpful. Thank you!!!
  4. Would it be better if we looked more at Clemson area? Dh is willing to commute if it makes for a better living situation for us.
  5. :sigh: And now. . . . how to break this to my hubby. :doublesigh: Well, we'll go there and check it out. They may not even offer him the job, so there's that. He is "slightly" ethnic. . . our last name sounds rather Hispanic. . . . .so. . . . ugh. (He was also born & bred in the northeast - the move to B'ham was a HUGE shocker to him)
  6. Aw, thanks Liz. It's been a long strange journey, but at this point I'm really good at playing the waiting game at this time of year. It's not a dream job by any stretch of the imagination, but it IS a college job, which is where he wants to be and where his gifts are. We'll see! There's also a possibility here in town, which would be just - wow - amazing. So if you are the praying type, I'll take all prayers as well! They start reviewing apps on Friday, so the timing is interesting.
  7. Hey, I'll take all information. I appreciate your willingness to be honest. Thanks.
  8. Oh for CRYING OUT LOUD. . . it's northEAST GA, not northwest like my original post said. OK, let's try again. How about Gainesville? Looks like there might be some good options there, including a ballet school.
  9. I'm going to add my voice to wondering, too. We may be moving to Toccoa area, and Clemson is one of the cities we may look at living in.
  10. I don't know if they would - I know they mentioned that some folks lived in nearby communities. They also mentioned that there might be a 4-bd house on campus for us to rent for very little $$ while we get to know the area, so that's a plus. I'm just worried about finding a good community for my kiddos, ya know? I'm not even averse to putting them in a (good) school setting, but the first year there I'd like to keep their lives as consistent as possible as what we've got now.
  11. So, for you long-timers, let's play another round of "Who will my dh work for next fall??" (Too long of a story to share. Trust me, you don't want to know.) He's being considered for a job in NW Georgia, at Toccoa Falls College. We are going there next week for an interview and to scope out the area. Can anyone familiar help? Here are the things I'm wondering: 1. I think we will need to live in a larger town than Toccoa ;) So. . .South Carolina or Georgia? How do they compare taxes and homeschooling? 2. My girls (currently 9th and 5th) are currently in a 2-day/week co-op/tutorial. Does anyone know of options like that near either Clemson, SC or maybe Mt. Airy, GA or even Athens, GA? 3. And super random - my 9th grader will be looking for a ballet school. Thoughts on that? I know this is a 'needle in a haystack' kind of question, but if anyone will know it's the Hive. Thanks!
  12. OK, I totally should be into this. . .but. . .well, read my siggie ;) (clarification: we live in Bama nation) Go UConn Huskies!!! (Is it NCAA Basketball season yet?)
  13. This. There is someone in my life who likely should have been diagnosed ADD (inattentive) as a child. Instead, this person grew up thinking they were a stupid, lazy, daydreamer. I'd prefer the label.
  14. Can I ask what you like about it? And can it store/document scans of obituaries, etc?
  15. Hoping someone here has some insight! My dh has a HUGE collection of genealogy records - on both sides of our family. He loves researching and collecting things, but really needs a desktop program to organize what he's found. I was all set to buy him Family Tree Maker, but THEN I realized they are discontinuing it as of 12/31. Ugh. Anyone have something they like? He runs a MacBook Pro. So far, I'm looking at Ancestral Quest and MacFamily Tree, but neither one grabs me. Help? Thanks!
  16. Oliver Wendell Holmes was my 4x great uncle. John Cougar Mellencamp is my great-uncle's cousin's son, so what - like some kind of distant cousin or something. But he can't play the bassoon, so I'm not claiming him!
  17. You guys! This is AWESOME! And her birthday is in January, so this gives me ideas for that, too! THANKS!
  18. Yeah, this is the coolest I've had for a long time. And it's a really dry year this year, so I'm thankful! The best was when I played a very, VERY contemporary church service, kind of a studio/jazz bassoon thing, and they brought in a drum line (little drummer boy, dontcha know) and had fog machines. THAT was a gig-and-a-half.
  19. Haha, yes! Bassoon. Coolest instrument there is. My girls are crazy excited that we are playing with Celtic Woman. Sadly, we can't afford to get them tickets.Bah.
  20. I played a gig once, backup orchestra, and this was one of the songs. I can't help it! I like it. Humming now.. . . . (Of course, hubby is practicing Sleigh Ride upstairs; we have a gig with Celtic Woman Saturday night!)
  21. Help a sister out? I'd like to get my mom some cooking/baking/kitchen gifts for Christmas. I'm on a pretty tight budget (less than $40 for the gift). She (& I) are doing Trim Healthy Mama, so she's in the kitchen a lot and starting to really enjoy it now. Ideas? Go!
  22. OOOH, I actually like that one. Mary Did You Know? Not so much. I'm wracking my brain now. . .
  23. We do fuzzy socks, trial size toiletries, candy, and then maybe 1 or 2 small gag or cute little gifts. It's more for tradition. We still put an orange in the bottom of the stockings as well, which I always had in my stocking growing up. I think it's b/c that's the only time of the year my mother got real citrus fruit growing up poor, but I've heard it's related to the 3 kings?
