  1. My DD is in 3rd this year and she does: TGTB 3 Mosdos Opal IEW Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales IEW Fix it! Nose Tree Sonlight 4 readers Spelling Wisdom Looks like more than it really is. This has been a great year for her in LA skill growth Next year I will have two third graders and my plan: 3rd grader #1 TGTB 3 W&R II SWO D Mosdos Opal Fix it! Sonlight readers grade 4 3rd grader #2 TGTB 3 BJU English 3 SYS D Mosdos Opal Reading list I choose and he chooses
  2. My teachers forced me to use those awful grips for years and my grip never changed. I write with my pencil resting on my ring finger and that is how I still write. It didn't hinder me and I overcame any hand fatigue I originally had. One of my kids writes exactly the same way and I spared him the grip torture 😋
  3. Oo-uhm 🙂 it really depends on what pronunciation you are using. Typically though 4th declension prn sounds like port-uhm and por-too-uhm. a more ecclesiastical pronunciation will give you more of a double long u sound I believe. httedited Edited to add a short video link
  4. I second Bunnicula big hit here when all of my kids were six (and when I was of a similar age)😉 While all of my kids have high reading levels, they have enjoyed the branch books like Eerie Elementary, Last Firehawk, Notebook of Doom...etc...
  5. Portuum is pronounced as two vowels in hiatus. Quus is the exception but other uum and uus endings are pronounced as separate vowel sounds.
  6. Our bodies have a number of binding sites for CBD and THC but our primary receptors that bind endocannabinoids are CB1 and CB2 receptors. A ton is known about CB1. This receptor exists primarily in your nervous system and heavily in our central nervous system and it binds THC. When CBD oil is extracted, THC is removed. CB2 receptors primarily exist in our gut/GI tract and bind CBD. The mechanism of action for cannabinoids is by blocking the reversible binding...basically leaving more cannabinoid around to bind to receptors. There is alot less research on CB2 receptors than CB1 but keep in mind CBD oil is primarily binding to CB2 and not many of those are in our brain. Ingesting or smoking marijuana will be activating both receptor types and provides the psychotropic effects since it is in higher quantity and concentration than our endogenous cannabinoids (the ones already in our body meant to activate those receptors). I would be weary of believing it has an effect on anxiety if only in CBD form. If it does, then it is probably acting through a mechanism in the peripheral nervous system at best. Also, consider the compensatory response when taking anything for anxiety. You provide the ligand (like THC or CBD) to act in a higher concentration on your receptor. Our bodies strive for homeostasis so it feels alot of this ligand resulting in a breakdown and clearing of some of our receptors to reset. Now the effect you feel from the normal dose is less (tolerance) and if you suddenly stop taking it your receptors have been altered and there are not enough binding sites to now feel our normal level of endogenous cannabinoids which leads to the exact issue you were trying to treat.
  7. This may have already been stated but PL uses a different pronunciation than SS. Probably minor but, for example, SS pronounces "v" as "w" and PL...if using the DVD and CDs uses the "v" pronunciation. I am sure there are other differences but it through my kids a bit.
  8. I have really grown to love MP and in the older grades I think that is where they really shine but this is coming from someone who is a total classicist nerd so take that for what it's worth. Your student really does need to have passion for the classics and by classics I mean classical studies. It isn't for everyone but I find deep value in it. Sonlight is fine, alot of reading and I don't feel it takes the book study as in depth as I like but they do schedule alot of great books. I have not had much exposure to Oak Meadow. I would stick with CAP if it is working though. I love that curriculum.
  9. I really love these books and I don't find them anti-Christian. They are so fun and interesting to read and cover a wide array of fascinating aspects of American history. I didn't love the layout at first but quickly got used to it. I haven't used them as much kids are still too young, but saw them on the shelf at the library so grabbed a few to look over for future consideration. I meant to just flip through but began reading and just kept on reading 😝 I will use them for sure at some point. Also, keep in mind Sonlight schedules them in their US History year and they are a Christian company. Just something to keep in mind 😊
  10. It's hard to explain but it is like....filler chunks of information I would say (in the companion). Random boxes of picture and text about various topics. That is how I felt about it atleast. RTD is more story/sequential-like than the companion but doesn't feel as engaging as SOTW or MoH IMO. We have only used the companion for ancients and RTD for middle ages though so I cannot speak to the other levels.
  11. Fortunately, the Milk had my 3 kids rolling with laughter. That was such a pleasant surprise as it was recommended from another hs parent. I second that recommendation!
  12. For literal creationists I wouldn't recommend it. There is an overabundance of science curriculums already that take a creationist viewpoint and I would recommend one of those. I would expect a history of science to be that; an actual history of science. Part of that history was Darwin and his counterparts along with many other landmark scientists that have shaped thought in our modern era. I may not agree with how Native Americans were treated in our history but I still teach it. People who's behaviors and ideas shape the world need to be given some air time. Just my 2 cents. I really like what they are trying to do and they have a pretty good book line up. I feel Sonlight has always tried to expose students to many views while still keeping with a solid biblical worldview. I feel it is quite responsible of them to do this. It allows the parent to have those deeper conversations before launching their child into the world. I am not sure how one armors a child's faith and prepares them to defend it without walking them through tough worldly conversations and dominant world theories. I have seen a number of kids go off to college and abandon their faith because they do not understand their faith in the sphere of modern science. Faith needs to be able to hold up and exist against opposition. Safest place to flex apologetics is in their home 🙂
  13. I find them to be really subpar to be honest. The companion for ancients felt disjointed and I gave up on it and sold it when we went through ancients. I got Remember the Days used for Middle Ages this year and once again, used it only for the first couple of weeks and dropped it. It was dry and although aimed at younger kids, felt not engaging for that age. Sad because I love every other aspect of BP. We just use the other scheduled spines. This could just be my own feelings though. If you looked at a sample and liked the layout, it could work as a spine but it isn't very.....thorough? Not sure that is the right word. It just feels incomplete somehow. I cannot quite put my finger on what bothers me about it.
  14. Every Sunday our church does a full dinner for our poor and homeless community. We get huge turn outs and it has happened on many occasions that someone attending will take some leftovers with them. It is all served buffet style out on big tables. I had seen people walk off with things before which prompted my worry. LC is so darn expensive that one really bothered me. It was a smaller 3 qrt but still...😥
  15. I had two bad experiences where my DH took one of our fiestaware platters and a smaller le creuset Dutch to our church and I never saw them again 😥 I even told him I didn't want him to do it since I was convinced I wouldn't get them back but he thought I was being paranoid. Now I keep a stock of dollar tree platters and bowls for him to go crazy with 😝 I still feel gutted when I think about it.
  16. Four games that see alot of play in our house as 2 players are: Splendor Century Golem Edition Dragonwood Descent with the DM app
  17. I have such a hard time parting with resources. There has been so many times that I pull from other curriculums that just teach a concept better or provide additional ways of looking at something. I do often give away resources I know I won't use again or atleast in a while when I meet a family that needs it.
  18. We have made a few changes since the fall... DD 9yo Finishing TGTB3 which is going really well Mosdos Opal on track to move into the 2nd book. She loves this curriculum Spelling Wisdom is a new one for us. Her workload is writing heavy so I switched out SYS which we love and will try this Fix it! Nose Tree we will keep doing this IEW:Myths, Fables and Fairy Tales is going splendidly well so no change Saxon54 and BA3C Sonlight grade 4 readers and comp questions are going well Start write cursive is still a hit Introducing TGTB keyboarding this semester Starting Latina Christiana DS 7yo Writing and Rhetoric Fable we started a couple weeks back and so far so good TGTB 2 is going well so no changes Rightstart D and BJU3 are going great SWO C...not my favorite spelling but he is enjoying it so I won't change Sonlight readers level 3 and comp questions SCM cursive is going well Prima Latina DS 7yo This little dude has been a bit harder to tweak the needs of but we currently are in a good place I think .. TGTB 2 he loves it so we are continuing IEW All Things Fun and Fascinating was just started a couple of weeks ago. It seems like it will be a good fit...we will see. SYS C is always a win with this kid so I won't be changing it. TT3 and a lot of math games, Montessori activities, balance benders and various other math play. This has been a good fit. Sonlight grade 3 readers and comp questions SCM cursive Prima Latina Combined: Ozobot bit programming and littlebits coding We had so much fun with TGTB arthropod unit this semester that we are going to do Marine Animals next along with finishing Supercharged Light which has been a really fun experience. Biblioplan 2 using SOTW2 and other resources has been just as lovely as it was for Ancient so no change. We are also using Sonlights timeline book which has been lovely. Geography is a combo of Draw Europe, cooking, playing geography games, reading stories, geopuzzle Europe and geography songs. We also have utilized sonlight's huge dry erase map.
  19. Well, I learned the hard way with my first two that are grown. I had this epiphany when they were teens and I was also counseling teens with screen addictions in my practice. If was too hard to change the habits of my oldest but when we had our 3 little ones I knew I would be a low to no tech parent. Having seen tech exposure with the first and now barely any this time...the difference is shocking. With my oldest we had inattention, complaining about school work, feeling bored when not gaming, all of the usual. Now we have kids who adore work, can get lost in study for hours, build, tinker, and have a calm, focused spirit about them. It is remarkable. Every time I feel like caving I just think about what I had to deal with before. Now with that said, we don't do zero screens. We watch about 30-50 min of a show each evening on most days but TV does not go on before 5pm at the very earliest. On Saturdays and Sundays we use programming and tech bases activities on a tablet such as littlebits, arduino, and so forth. I believe in providing tech skills by helping them learn how to use tech in a healthy way.
  20. Could not relate more to this. Last year I dropped all of our work to do an entire month of immersive Harry Potter units where we incorporated all disciplines into the theme. I was loving it and while the kids move HP they just could not have been more off that month. It seems my kids do best and work hardest when we do the same schedule every day. I would love to be more free flowing but my rigid littles will just not let me 😝
  21. We are structured in our routine. We typically start around the same time every morning and end most written work around lunch with some reading, experiments, crafts etc in the afternoon most days. I found I couldn't be spontaneous with field trips and other bigger projects and activities with a routine so we have scheduled in every 4th week as a week where we go fun and go immersive on topics and activities. That is working for us. I cannot imagine having a loose schedule with my kids as they are hard working and settled with routine but get lazy and irritable if I keep things too loose. This allows the best of both worlds for us.
  22. Unfortunately I have never seen it sold anywhere except on the publishers website called jackris. Oh, nevermind, it looks like Jess4879 already linked it 😊
  23. This may have been posted already but TG&TB is giving away a free pdf download of the Marine Biology Unit. 🙂
  24. I put a word app on mine and use a bluetooth keyboard to type. I take it with me sometimes to type up homeschool plans while my kids are in class.
  25. I do everything I would on my phone browsing the web, watch Netflix, hulu, use various apps, pay bills, pretty much anything you could do on any other tablet I suppose.
