  1. Well, he's not any better today. I took him to the vet this morning. The vet could tell he was in pain and saw his trembling. They gave him an injection and took x-rays. The only thing he noticed on the x-rays was arthritis in his hips but he doesn't think it is enough to cause what's going on. The vet is having someone better look at the x-rays tomorrow to see if he's missing something. Still no moving unless he has to, which is only when we take him out to potty. No real food and only water if we bring it to him. Even then, he won't drink every time. It's horrible. I really wish he could talk to tell us what the heck is going on.
  2. I do. Dh doesn't. He's in his mid forties and can still eat like a teenager. He also rarely exercises anymore. At his last physical, all his numbers were perfect and they actually said they wanted him to gain five pounds. Uggghhh.
  3. Somehow me not correcting my kids in front of others hasn't lead to chaos. Maybe I just got lucky with my two but they're teens now and we've never had that happen. We've always handled any issues after. I'm not opposed to others doing it differently but doing so over syrup seems a tad much.
  4. I don't think kids should never be corrected in front of others or at family gatherings. I do think correcting because I think my kid put too much chocolate syrup on her food is not something I would do. I also would probably inwardly cringe and roll my eyes at someone else doing it. For me, it's about picking my battles and I don't see a need for correcting in front of family on a holiday just because of syrup.
  5. I can see many sides of this issue. I celebrated today with my mom but only the first half. She was obviously ready to be alone when we left her. She's lost a child and her own mother. I think this day is hard when she gets gifts and phone calls/visits from her surviving children but it's obvious one is not here. She doesn't try to bring us down, though. She's active on social media too and usually has a good balance of happy and sad on this day. I do see the sad Father's Day posts. Maybe it's because it's a difficult day for me since my birthday and Father's Day are usually the same weekend and I've lost my dad. I do my best to make it great for dh and be happy but I'm sad part of the day as well because I wish I could celebrate with my own dad.
  6. Unless the crying is loud, I would ignore it. When I am upset and start to cry, I can usually get it under control with not many being aware. If someone points it out, though, all bets are off. It seems to only make it worse. I don't know the age of your dd but with my own, in front of family, I would ignore it unless it was very obvious or loud. My dds would usually excuse themselves because it is embarrassing to them to cry in front of people.
  7. I would have just laughed it off and moved on. Maybe it would help if you think of it terms of you don't feel a need to stop or correct MIL when she does something similar? I wouldn't think to correct or ask my MIL, or mom, to stop in that situation. I would laugh, roll my eyes inwardly, vent to dh later, and move on.
  8. We helped him outside and once he hit the grass he did pee. He's drinking water as long as I bring it to him and he's taking his meds when stuffed inside a treat. No real food and no moving unless forced to, though. I will tape him next time we have to move him so they can see how he's moving and his shaking/panting. Thanks for the advice.
  9. It's not just about hand holding to have students at this level turn in drafts and have steps that are reviewed along the way. It is about them learning how to improve and do things better on the next paper. Oldest dd is a talented writer and she thrives on criticism, whether it be from peers or teachers. Some of it is difficult but the critique helps her to see problems as they happen and they make her better. I don't think your dc should have one paper determine whether they pass or fail the entire year unless they had performed poorly all year. If they have performed poorly all year and been on the bubble of pass/fail then I can see having them redo it. That's not what I'm getting from your posts, though, so it seems way too harsh and not quite right.
  10. Dh just reminded me that this is the same dog that became sick several years ago but acted fine when we took him to the vet. Fortunately, this had been our vet for a long time and knew we weren't prone to overreact so he did a few tests. He actually ran them twice because he thought it was a mistake. This same dog had a bad case of pancreatitis and needed to be kept there on IV fluids for several days. So, I think dh thought he was helping but now I'm just more worried that our dog is sicker than he appears.
  11. Our 8 year old terrier/Beagle mix had a growth removed Wednesday. It turned out to be just a cyst. He was sent home with many stitches, pain meds, and an antibiotic. He's been fine until today, so four days later. He wouldn't get up for food or water. When we tried to move him, he yelped. We were able to get him into the car to go to emergency vet clinic where he proceeded to act fine. They did give us an extra pain med based on what we described. We are back home and he is back to not moving. He had to go up a step to our house and he made it look really painful. I have to bring him the water bowl and he will drink but he won't eat. He will not move unless we make him (like to go potty). When he does move, he starts shaking and panting. Is this just probably pain? Why would he be fine at the vet? He was really excited there, as he always is to see people, so I don't know if that could block out the pain. I'm probably going to have to take him back to vet in morning but if he acts fine there I don't know if there's anything to do. He's never done this before either.
  12. I have a Beagle / Terrier mix we got through a rescue and he is the sweetest thing ever and great with kids. But, I would never take him on a boat or plane. We have to board him when we travel. When we moved to a new state, we had to give him tranquilizers to make it bearable for him and us. He hates being confined in such a small space.
  13. I just don't believe that poor districts get as much. It hasn't played out that way anywhere we have lived. Where we are at now is ridiculous. We had to move quickly and didn't do enough research but we landed in the least diverse place we've ever been in. Just a bit up the road is a district much more diverse and with lots less money. Our district is putting in a 10 million dollar student center next year at the high school. Yes, 10 million! It's basically only for athletes as it will have an indoor track, larger weight room, four basketball courts, and I forget what else. The school itself already has a weight room, an indoor pool, and two indoor gymnasiums. It wasn't voted on and they say it won't raise taxes. I have no idea how that can be but we're new here. Those around us and who are from here don't see the big deal.
  14. It's honestly not all bad, though. I can say I've been amazed at what my dds have learned this year, technology wise, using them for school. They've each had to do several presentations and what they put together on the iPad is pretty awesome. They also both have enjoyed studying for the foreign language classes on them. I'm not sure what apps were put on them for that but one is in Spanish and one is in German and what they've had on the iPad has helped a lot. I've caught them studying for fun.
  15. Yeah, I've researched and there were lawsuits regarding the book fees but the schools/state won. It seems everyone here has just accepted it.
  16. We're in the Midwest. Taxes here are more than we paid in Florida but not ridiculous.
  17. We have book fees here. The iPad with apps is $125 for the year and then we pay for the actual textbooks and workbooks they are issued. I paid just under $1000 for both of my dds this school year. Those who aren't in Honors or AP pay less. Those who qualify for free/reduced lunch pay even less or none at all. But, not many in our district qualify to pay nothing.
  18. Here all students are issued iPads on the first day of school, at least in middle and high school. They are also issued text books for all classes, though. They have access to online text books if they wish and my dds usually use a mix of both. The iPads aren't just to replace textbooks here as they come loaded with apps they use for school (Khan Academy, Google Docs, etc). We pay book fees here so that may be why they are issued actual text books as well as the iPads and online books. Some students do play on them and even during class. I don't get the feeling they are monitored at all.
  19. Catalytic, I can assure you that the money paid to dh while married, living on base, and stationed in San Diego, CA didn't go far. I don't think $300 / month would have rented us a bathroom. We probably should have reached out for public assistance while I was pregnant and on bedrest but we just ran up CC debt instead. We're way out of that now, but it was tough for a long time.
  20. What, exactly, do you think happened to the animals God created? I'm so confused by this statement. I've heard many people refute the comparison of animals being gay but I've not heard one of them say God didn't create them.
  21. TranquilMind, did you choose to be straight? I think it's a fair question since you seem so adamant that those that are not straight are only choosing to be so. My dd felt early on that she was a bit different from most girls because they were discussing which boys they liked. As she aged, she realized she felt different because she liked the girls they way liked the boys. She didn't feel comfortable stating that to anyone until almost sixteen. It's definitely not a choice. She can't just decide to go out and get a boyfriend because she finds the idea of being with a male disgusting. Youngest dd is almost 14 and she feels zero attraction for either gender. I told her it's completely normal even if the world thinks she should already like someone or feel attraction. I told her to just let us know if that changes and we're good with whomever she ends up with (even if it's no one). I knew I liked boys at her age but I didn't have a relationship until after high school because I wasn't ready for all the drama then. Dh liked girls since birth I think. No joke, he wanted a girlfriend in 1st grade because he thought they were too cute. I think all of the above are completely normal. I think the only people who choose which gender they will end up with are those that aren't actually straight.
  22. I told myself I wasn't going to participate in this anymore but I have to speak up here. In regards to clubs in schools that you say silence opposition I call BS in all that we've been involved in. Dd is involved in her school GSA club and they are the ones that people want to silence. If they put up posters, like other groups, they get hateful graffiti. Then the posters must come down and no one is ever caught or punished. They've been on their way to meetings while a Christian group stands on both sides of the hallway singing hymns for them to turn from their wicked ways. Many don't like them being there or being allowed to have a club so they do their best to push them out and shut them up.
  23. Mine was Gladiator. Not the Russell Crow movie but some boxing movie in the early 90s.
  24. The Middle and Last Man Standing are a lot like those and they've been on a few years now. We've all been enjoying a new show, The Real O'Neals, as well but it might be too much for some.
