SM works great for us with my 7yo. Teaches thinking, so I am glad with that. I use the HIG with manipulatives, as my dd really likes them, textbook, workbook. We also do the IP and CWP, too. And the Abeka worktext for second grade - which is way too easy, but more american. There are lots of threads on this topic. I guess many of us are tortured by finding the... perfect math for our children :-) Good luck to you!

We use the Miller stories - and my dd writes down the verse in her little verse - notebook, and reads all of them every time we do character. And we use the BIble, too.

We are using Abeka for my 5 yo (and I used this in K for my 7 yo). They do a lot of blends: - ladder blends: ba be bi bo bu , etc, etc, etc over and over. Maybe you could try this. My son is getting to read a bit better now, he just turned 5 and 2 months ago, I tried this last year and did not work. Heis getting into long vowels. like gate, deep, etc.... We are doing just the Abeka Handbook for reading and the Phonics Pathway half a page a day, and his favorite, ABeka workbook. You may want to try that lesson in a few weeks and see.

On Netflix we get Wonders of GOd's creation, Creatures that defy evolution.

You're welcome, I am sure I did not come up by myself with the idea... maybe I read it somewhere here, too :-) I also started FLL1 in Jan of first grade. We are in FLL2 and WWE2 now in second grade. In first grade before WWE, and in K I did write on HWT paper a lot of copywork, and dd copied right under my writing (I left a line empty under every line I wrote.) We did tons of verses, poems, etc like this. Then, I started to fill out a whole HWT paper with the verse, and she had to write on a new piece of paper, copying word for word. Maybe this helped her be ready for WWE1? I don't know but she always liked copywork and handwriting. I started cursives in first grade, too, but not HWT. If it was me, I would be worried if my dd shut down because of too much school - school is supposed to be fun, at this age, and my dd already does not like school - the "idea" of school. But it seems you are flexible and not regimenting her work.

I don't understand how you can order that, it says "coming soon"...

We did HWOT in K and first grade, and even now in second, just for fun. We started WWE1 in the second half of first grade, and just finished it. My dd can write very nice - if she tries to - but I still wanted the HWOT because she liked it so much and it is good.

My kids like them, too, for long trips. My kids are 7, 5, 3

The special HWT lined paper really helped my dd then 5 and 6 learn lowercase. She loved to use the board with double lines, and then the paper. She has very good printing. I plan to use the same with my current (but not so natural writer) 5 yo. I think with regular paper - how would you use that for printing lowercase? Sure it is doable, but wouldn's the letters be too big, or too little?

Thank you for your answers. I do not understand how it helps. They do not cover well visits - we have 3 children, almost 4, age 7 and under. They do not cover sick visits either. What do they cover? The bill has to be over $300 to be covered, but not even that. I do not get it....

It is driving me crazy. I tell my 5 yo boy that d starts with a belly first, than a big line, while b starts with a line and then a belly. We tried the bed and did not work. I think mine will figure it out once we get to the lower case letters in HWOT. But not there yet...

I skipped a couple of chapters. In SOTW 1 I skipped Confucius and some others like that. Did not see any benefit to for my first grader in that. We concentrated on the big civilizations. They remember the projects for those.

If it wasn't for Thatcher and President Ronald Reagan who knows when and if I would be out today from that awful communist country I was born in. Thank God for them.

What preparation test books do you use? I use Spectrum - has both LA and MAth, but mine is second grade, so we have not tested yet. We do Singapore, but also the Abeka worktext - which is easy for her grade level, because Singapore is more advanced, but has problems put a little differently, and topics missing in Singapore.

We like Wonders of God's creation, and I cannot wait to receive Incredible Creatures that Defy Evolution and The Priviledged Planet.

I kind of do the CWP a "letter" behind, though I finished 1B now, and a trying to finish CWP and IP B before I go into 2A. So if I am in B, and I do the CWP problems from A.

I would do math when the other kids take a nap. Evening would be too late - my dd would be tired. My dd did well last year with Singapore, we just finished 1B now in second grade, and is doing well. She is highly distractive, too. But she does not hit herself. To me, that would be a worrysome thing. I would try to fix that before worrying about math or anything else. Does she hit herself only when it comes to math? She must be very frustrated or something, I really do not know how I would classify this attitude. But if you fix that I think you will help her a lot in dealing with things in general.

We use both, but that puts us a little behind, too, because it takes time, I cannot just have my 7yo do 2 hours of math every day. To me CWP is much easier to my dd that IP. She gets the problems in CWP very easily.

Is there a program for your elementary that teaches a little grammar, too, for Spanish? We are using Power Glide and my 7 and 5 yo really like these books with Cd, and we are writing down a lot and repeating, so they are learning. But it does not have - so far, in level 1- any grammar, memorization of verbs, etc...

I use the activity guide ($10) of Diana Waring for this. It is great. Talks about specific verses to go with the chapter. And has fun activities, too. Actually I am not using SOTW 2 anymore because it does not have any connection to the Bible and it presents all religions as the same. There is also another book for older kids, The CHurch in History - has a lot of lives of missionaries, as Christianity spread in the middle ages.

If she completed 1B in Singapore with no problem, then in my opinion RS B is way too easy. We were doing B at the beginning of first grade last year together with Singapore 1A and it was boring for DD6. I bought the activities and worksheets books from RS and now I am doing that with her once a week, while continuing CWP and IP for 1B - we just finished Sing 1B a couple of weeks ago, switched to CWP and IP for 1 month, and then going into 2A.
